The W . M ., Bro . Gulliford , on rising to respond , was enthusiastically received . He stated that he much appreciated their reception , that he was gratified with the kind remarks of Bro . Ginder , and that he would do his utmost to carry out the duties of his office , hehoped , to their entire satisfaction . In following his predecessor , who had had 33 initiates , he felt he had undertaken a great task , but he was proud that he was the Master of such an important lodge : Might he mention again that he was going up as Steward forthe Old People , and he urged the members to give liberally so that his list would be a large one in amount . He would ask Bro . Beach to go round with the list and he hoped the result would be that his appeal had not been made in vain .
The W . M . then presented Bro . E . T . Ginder , I . P . M ., with a splendid Past Master ' s jewel , which he did in a few appropriate words , remarking that all those who had attended the lodge during the last 12 months were delighted with his manner and the great things he had done for the lodge , and all hoped to have . him there for many years to come . The jewel bore the following inscription : ' Presented by the City of Westminster Lodge to Bro . Edward Thos . Ginder , P . M ., for valuable services rendered —November 24 th , 1 S 9 S . "
In acknowledging the jewel , Bro . Ginder , I . P . M ., said that if he had been a success it was due entirely to his good officers . He was proud to be a P . M . ol" the City of Westminster Lodge , as there was no other Iodge in England like it . Seven years ago the lodge was in a state of chaos , but it was then in a nourishing condition , having a large balance in hand . In giving "The Installing and Immediate Past Master , Bro . Ginder , " the VV . M . observed that he had already spoken of him , and as he was so well known he need not extol his many virtues .
In response , Bro . Ginder remarked that he thought he had said enough for one evening , but he assured them that if he had given satisfaction during his happy year of office , then he had reached the summit of his Masonic ambition . The VV . M . proposed " The Initiates , " and said that they could not get along without new members . They had four that day and he thought they were good specimens , and he earnestly trusted they would turn out good Masons .
In response , Bro . L . Jessop thanked them most sincerely for electing him as a member , and he hoped to be an ardent worker in the Craft , and that they would never regret making him a Mason . Bro . J . E . Buckley said that he appreciated the great honour of being made a member of their noble Institution . Bro . C . J . Kittell observed that he trusted to prove a good Mason . Bro . H . Lardner also acknowledged the toast in brief but appropriate terms .
In submitting the toast of " The Visitors , " the VV . M . stated that they were honoured with the presence of S 7 visitors , and many of them were distinguished and well-known in the Craft , and they were all welcome , and he joined with the toast the name of Bro . Frank Harper , P . M . 2120 and 2521 , P . P . A . G . D . C . Bro . Harper responded , thanking the VV . M . for the kind way he had proposed the toast , and the members for the hearty way they had received and entertained their guests . That was his first visit , for which he was indebted to Bro . A . H . Marks , P . M .
He congratulated the members on their choice of W . M ., and hehoped he would have not 33 initiates , but 34 and upwards . Bro . E . Gerson also responded in very happy terms . The W . M . gave as one toast " The Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary . " Bro . W . C . Smith , P . M ., the late Sec . and oldest P . M ., responded . He said hc felt he was a servant in their hands ; he had been a member of th ; lodge , which he dearly loved , for 21 years . Thelodge was perfectly solvent , and he ventured to think
that he had done something to bring about that happy result , and he would always do , as he hoped he had done in the past , everything to promote its prosperity ; but as they had elected him an honorary member , he was somewhat at a disadvantage . Ha was vain enough to think that the whole of the members had sincere regard for him , and if they wished him to attend the lodge , although as an honorary member , he would gladly put in an appearance . He had held the office of Secretary for five years , and might he ' add that during that time the lodge had made wonderful progress . Bro . Smith spoke in very feeling terms , and his remarks were received with great applause .
Bro . C . M . Brander , P . M ., Treas ., said that he had tried hard to do his duty , and the appreciation shown to him that evening was veiy gratifying to him . The I . P . M ., Bro . Ginder , was one of his initiates , and it was a happy experience that he should have made the presentation to him that day . Bros . H . Fonseca , P . M ., and M . M . Taylor , P . M ., having responded in glowing terms ,
Bro . A . H . Marks , P . M ., also acknowledged the toast . He stated that he was pleased to be numbered among the Past Masters of the City of AVestminster Lodge , which was a lodge whose financial , as well as numerical , position had placed it in the first rank of Craft lodges in the Metropolis . They had not always been so successful , however , and their present proud position had no doubt been achieved by the keen interest evinced by the whole of the officers in the welfare of the lodge for several years past . He ( Bro . Marks ) was vain enough to think that be had done something to raise
the lodge to its present high position . His efforts , however , would not have been of much avail without the valuable aid and assistance of Bro . VV . C . Smith , P . M ., who had vacated the secretarial chair that evening . There were many among them who could testify to the zeal and assidi ity displayed by Bro . Smith for the benefit of the lodge . He had very pleasant recollections of his year of office ; no request was made to the Secretary to pttrform du ' . ies lor the lodge but that he cheerfully carried them out ,
and , in his opinion , it was largely due to the efforts of Bro . Smith that the lodge enjoyed its present proud position . Their brother , however , was not getting younger , and , although , on account of his age , he had given up the Secretaryship , yet they hoped to have the benefit of his counsel and advice for many years to come , and he was sure he was expressing the wish of most of the members present when he trusted that Bro . Smith would be spared to attend many more of the pleasing functions in connection with thc lodge , and they entertained for him the highest respect and esteem .
liro . John Swift , thc new Secretary , also responded , remarking that he would do his utmost in his new office , and hoped to be well able to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor , Bro . VV . C . Smith , P . M . " The Officers" having been honoured , the Tyler's toast brought to a close a highly satisfactory and veiy happy meeting , for which the VV . M ., Bro . II . T . Gulliford , is to be congratulated .
