Lodge were in favour of the appellants whom he represented ; and although the Grand Registrar very ably and skilfully said all that a practised pleader
and experienced Masonic jurist could say in support of the action of the Board , the subsequent division showed the feeling was strongly in favour of Bro . Eve's motion , which was carried by a substantial majority .
Although the Grand Registrar may be right in his contention that the legal position is unalterable , we must confess to a feeling of satisfaction that the generous instincts of Grand Lodge have found
expression in a vote that will prove to our brethren in the Colonies that we are jealous of any acts that would tend to lessen in any degree the feeling of loyalty and attachment to the oldest and most united Masonic jurisdiction in the world .
We are glad to hear that the Board of Stewards which Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , Secretary to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , has succeeded thus far in enrolling is a very formidable one , and though we do not anticipate that it will be as strong as that which
supported Bro . the Earl of Lathom , when he presided as Chairman at the 1891 Festival , present appearances justify us in prognosticating that in respect of numbers , it will take rank after those which did their duty so
admirably at the Girls' Centenary in 1 S 8 S , the Benevolent Jubilee last year , and the Boys' School Festival already referred to as having been held in 1891 . # # *
What it will succeed in effecting remains to be seen ; bul it promises well when so large a Board is brought together , and when , at the same time , we know that London is strongly represented ; that the Chairman ' s Province of Essex evidently intends doing its work on
an unprecedented scale ; and that several of the other Provinces make an excellent show in the matter of Stewards . If the Returns correspond in value with the number of brethren who are canvassing , the total should be a big one . » * *
We understand that the members of the Fidelity and Sincerity Lodge , No . 1966 , are expecting to have a special treat on Monday , thc 12 th inst . The esteemed Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Somerset ( Bro . R . C . Else , P . G . D . ) has promised to install Bro . W . Henry
Westlake , Councillor of Taunton , as the W . M ., and Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., of Torquay , has intimated his intention of being present in honour of the occasion , the W . M . elect being one of his oldest and most respected friends . * * #
Bro . Hughan will be absent from Torquay for several weeks , if not months , and will be for some timeat Bath , Only important correspondence , he tells us , can be attended to ad interim , and , although Bro . Hughan ' s
definition of rest is change , it is hoped his numerous correspondents will attach a more literal interpretation to the word by refraining from writing our well-known brother unless absolutely needful .
Bro . Hughan's fault is that he thinks too little about himself and too much about his friends , so it must be left to the latter to correct this conspicuous weakness as much as possible . # * *
M . W . Bro . General J . Corson Smith , Past Grand Master Illinois , whose visit to this country and to London lodges last summer will be remembered by many of our readers , held an informal but delightful reception a week or two since at his
residence , Selby-street , Chicago . Among the 100 guests invited were many distinguished World ' s Fair officials , including Bros . W . H . Harris , British Commissioner ; Dato Sri Amar d'Raja , C . M . G ., and H . W . Lake ,
Commissioners for Johore , and others . In connection with this function a special meeting of the Association of Veterans of Illinois was convened , at which Bros . Dato Sri Amar d'Raja and H . W . Lake were , on the motion of Bro . Gen . Smith , elected honorary members .
The portrait of Lord Euston , which was presented to Grand Mark Lodge by the twin Grafton Lodges , on Tuesday night , is a striking likeness and a work of the highest order of merit . The artist , Mr . J . M . Rogier , who , by thc way , was also the painter of the Prince of
Wales ' s portrait , i . s certainly to be congratulated on the success of his efforts . It is a great pity that the Mark Hall is so badly lighted and so little adapted to the exhibition of artistic work : when the panels are all full it will behove the Premises Committee to do something in the matter .

1031 ] THE WATSON MS . I am much pleased to announce that the extraordinary successful Masonic angler , Bro . W . Watson , of Leeds , has acquired another Masonic MS . of the " Old Charges" for the West Yorkshire Masonic Library and Museum , of which he is the Honorary Curator . Bro . T . M . Watson , of Sunderland , has wisely parted
with his valuable scroll , which was given by me in the Christmas Freemason , 188 9 , because he considers it safer and better in the custody of such a collection as that of West Yorkshire , and the Masonic veteran , Bro . T . M . Embleton , well known and respected in the Province of West Yorkshire , has become thc purchaser of it , and donated it to the library aforesaid ,
thus raising the number of MSS . in that great collection to seven . Now " we are seven , " possibly Bro . Watson may retire from his beloved sport , though I think not myself , as his ideas of perfection are always sufficiently elastic to embrace every opportunity of adding to that famous library . The MS . was obtained through the medium of Bro . William Watson , and for the future ( by the desire of the R . W . Bro .
Thomas W . Tew , Prov . G . M . ) will be known as the "T . W-. Embleton MS . " This is an excellent title for the roll as there is already the celebratec ! " William Watson MS ., " and I quite agree with the R . W . Bro . Tew in thus making the change so as to prevent any confusion in the matter . No doubt Bro . Watson will bring out another of the series of the Yorkshire reprints , with the "T . W . Embleton MS . " as the MS . to be reproduced . W . J . HUGHAN .

The I . P . M . proposed " The Health of the W . M . " 1 the course of his speech he mentioned the fact of the man years connection of Bro . N . P . Lardner's family with th "' Ward of Farringdon Without . The name was hin-l , ly r e spected , and deservedly so , in municipal and parochial circles . In conclusion , the speaker said that he was con fident the W . M . would carrv out the duties of his „„„ :. a "
thoroughly well . He ( the W . M . ) was also fortunate in possessing two brothers who had achieved high positions in the Masonic world , and , with their assistance and matured advice , he was bound to succeed . The W . M ., in reply , thanked the brethren for the cordial reception accorded to the toast . He said that he felt some .
what diffident as to the manner in which he should discharire the responsibilities of his office . The lodge had had in the chair several very good workers of the Craft ceremonies brethren who had devoted many years to the cause 0 ! Masonry , and therefore to attempt to equal their efforts would be a most difficult task . However , he should do his best , and he trusted that at the end of his year of office that the members would not regret having elected him as their W . M .
In giving "The Installing Officer , " the W . M . said that he had been greatly gratified by being installed in the chair by one who was his brother in a dual sense . He would not speak of the work that day , as that had been most elo . quently alluded to in the lodge . They all saw that his brother was far from well , and he felt confident that they would all heartily join with him in wishing the Installing Master a speedy restoration to health .
lhe pledge was received with great warmth and heartiness . Bro . H . J . Lardner , in the course of his reply , thanked the LP . M . for having , unasked , allowed him to install thc W . M . He was very proud of the lodge , it numbered among its members many old and dear friends of his own . They had elected him many times as their Treasurer , and
so long as they continued so to do it would be his duty and pleasure to discharge the duties of his office to the best of his ability . The Worshipful Master then rose and said that he wished to interpolate a toast , viz ., that of "The Initiate and Joining Members . " The former at the last meeting was compelled to leave before his health could be proposed , and among the latter several had attended the lodge that
evening for the first time . In Bro . G . Walter they had a brother who bore an honoured name in the Ward . His late father , Mr . Deputy George Walter , was highly esteemed and respected . They were favoured that night also with the presence of Bro . Alderman Treloar , who had done so much for the Ward . He ( the W . M . ) hoped that in due course their distinguished brother would be chief magistrate
of the City of London . The lodge a few years ago entertained Bro . Sir Polydore de Keyser when he was Lord Mayor , and they would lie prepared , and hoped to do the same for their present worthy Alderman . The W . M . also kindly alluded to Bros . C . Moore , C . C , and J . W . Gaze . Bro . Walter having said a few words in reply , Uro . Alderman Treloar made a most clever and witty speech in
replying for the joining members . Bros . VV . Drew , J . H . Wood , W . A . Scurrah , H . 11 . Shirley , and others responded to " The Visitors ; " Bros . J . Strugnell , and T . Simpson for "The Past Masters ;" and Bros . VV . H . Jackson , C . Bachoffner , and H . Hcrhcrt for " The Officers . "
During the evening Bros . Dr . Hinton , J . Young , P . M ., C . Shapcott , H . Harden , H . J . Macfarlane , and E . Schultz , P . M ., instrumentally and vocally entertained the brethren . The whole proceedings passed oft most satisfactorily , and the executive are to be congratulated upon the success that attended their efforts .
