BIRKENHEAD . Minerva Lodge ( No . 2433 ) . — On Friday evening , the 2 nd inst ., there svas a large and influential gathering of members and visitors at the Alasonic Chambers , 9 , Hamilton-street , to svelcome Bro . George William Speth , P . M . sSj , a most accomplished gentlciisin and a Mason of celebrity , not only in this , his native country , but in every part of the svorld svhere the Royal art is cultivated . Fesv

Masons have so great a reputation outside the limits of their osvn jurisdiction as this distinguished brother , svho is a prominent Alasonic author and svriter , and the learned and courteous Secretary of the celebrated Lodge of the Ouatuor Coronati , No . 207 G , an ollice held by him since the consecration of the lodge on thc 12 th January , iSSG . This great lodge svas founded for thc study and investigation of Alasonic subjects , and to induce a more scholarly

and critical consideration of evidence , a greater relish for historical facts , and subserve at the same time the increasing and healthy movement for the extension' of libraries and museums in all lodges . The Alinerva Lodge , consecrated in September , 1 S 92 , svas founded for the purpose of reading and discussing papers on subjects cognate to Freemasonry , such as arch-oology , mythology , science and art , and termed generally on the lines of the

'Juatuor Coronati . Since its foundation the lodge—the first of its kind in the piovinces—has prospered greatly , and the interest of the members in papers read at the meetings steadily increased , every paper leading to very interesting discussions among members and visiting brethren . The present W . AI ., Bro . John Armstrong , ' . G . S . of VV ., is indefatigable in his efforts to ensure su ; - tess , sparing neither time nor labour to attain that end .

Bro . Speth , honorary member of thc lodge since its formation , on this occasion paid the members the compliment of [ ravelling specially from Margate for thc purpose of read"ig a paper on " The Degrees of Antient ( pre-1717 ) '' " reemasonry , " and by a careful dissection and comparison of existing documents , suchasAlS . Rolls of the Constitutions Kleanings from the 17 th century , svriters and diaries , early catechisms , the Book of the Constitutions , & c , to arrive at some conclusion as to the nature and numbers of the

ceremonies of the Craft in the traditionary epoch ; to follow these * up through the transitional era ; and to trace their "eve opment into our present Three Degree ritual . 'The paper throughout svas most able and interesting , and for nearl y two houis secured the undivided attention of those Present . During the reading of the paper Bro . Speth passetl round for inspection several facsimile A 1 S . Rolls of ^ institutions ; a first edition copy ( 1723 ) of the Constitutions
