BRO . THE REV . T . BARTON SPENCER , ALA ., Vicar of St . James ' s , Preston , is the only surviving son of thc late Bro . Alderman Dr . Lasvrence C . Spencer , J . P ., Alayor of Preston in 18 5 6 and 1870 . He svas initiated in Peace and Unity Lodge , No . 314 , Preston , o ' n June 14 th , 1875 , together svith his late tsvo brothers ( Bro . C . G . Spencer ,

solicitor , and Bro . Dr . L . VV . Spencer ) . The three brothers , representing the three professions of divinity , lasv , and medicine , occupied the three chairs of the lodge at the same time , and follosved each other into the Alaster ' s chair—a thing that does not often occur in Masonry . Bro . Barton Spencer was installed W . M . in 1880 , when he arranged with the brethren to attend Divine service

at St . James ' s Church , and preached a sermon in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Charities , the result being a collection amounting to £ 26 . In 1881 , he was appointed Prov . Grand Chaplain of West Lancashire , and officiated as such at the laying of the foundationstone of the Harres Free Library and Aluseum by Bro . the Earl of Lathom , then D . G . M ,, Prov . G . M . He

preached at Keepham Church svhen the Earl of Lathom uncovered a stained-glass window , svhich had been presented by the Freemasons of the neighbourhood , and delivered the oration at the consecration of the Lathom Lodge , No . 2229 , Liverpool , a lodge which is restricted to Past and Present Provincial Grand Officers , and also gave the oration at the

consecration of several other lodges . He was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . M ., a Grand Chaplain of England in 1889 . He marked his year of office by again holding a service in St . James ' s Church forthe brethren of Preston , while he preached in the Wigan Parish Church on the last stale visit of the Mayor ( the late Bro . W . Rogers ) , who was

accompanied by the Freemasons , and also at a Alasonic service in Manchester Cathedral , as svell as in other towns . He was installed W . M . of the Lathom Lodge , No . 2229 , Southport , in 1893 , and was again installed W . M . of his mother lodge Peace and Unity , No . 314 , Preston , on January 8 , a distinction which , sve believe , has only been shared by one other brother during the

Prov . G . AL , of the Excelsior Lodge in Liverpool . In 1890 he was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . M . M . M ., a Grand Chaplain , and acted as such when H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , K . G ., svas installed at Brighton as Prov . G . M . M . M . of Sussex . Bro . Barton Spencer svas perfected in the Phillips Rose Croix Chapter , No . 180 , Lancaster , and is an officer of the

chapter . Resides preaching frequently at Masonic services on behalf of the various Masonic Charities , Bro . BRO . THE REV . T . BARTON SPENCER , ALA ., Vicar of St . James ' s , Preston , is the only surviving son of thc late Bro . Alderman Dr . Lasvrence C . Spencer , J . P ., Alayor of Preston in 18 5 6 and 1870 . He svas initiated in Peace and Unity Lodge , No . 314 , Preston , o ' n June 14 th , 1875 , together svith his late tsvo brothers ( Bro . C . G . Spencer ,

solicitor , and Bro . Dr . L . VV . Spencer ) . The three brothers , representing the three professions of divinity , lasv , and medicine , occupied the three chairs of the lodge at the same time , and follosved each other into the Alaster ' s chair—a thing that does not often occur in Masonry . Bro . Barton Spencer was installed W . M . in 1880 , when he arranged with the brethren to attend Divine service

at St . James ' s Church , and preached a sermon in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Charities , the result being a collection amounting to £ 26 . In 1881 , he was appointed Prov . Grand Chaplain of West Lancashire , and officiated as such at the laying of the foundationstone of the Harres Free Library and Aluseum by Bro . the Earl of Lathom , then D . G . M ,, Prov . G . M . He

preached at Keepham Church svhen the Earl of Lathom uncovered a stained-glass window , svhich had been presented by the Freemasons of the neighbourhood , and delivered the oration at the consecration of the Lathom Lodge , No . 2229 , Liverpool , a lodge which is restricted to Past and Present Provincial Grand Officers , and also gave the oration at the

consecration of several other lodges . He was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . M ., a Grand Chaplain of England in 1889 . He marked his year of office by again holding a service in St . James ' s Church forthe brethren of Preston , while he preached in the Wigan Parish Church on the last stale visit of the Mayor ( the late Bro . W . Rogers ) , who was

accompanied by the Freemasons , and also at a Alasonic service in Manchester Cathedral , as svell as in other towns . He was installed W . M . of the Lathom Lodge , No . 2229 , Southport , in 1893 , and was again installed W . M . of his mother lodge Peace and Unity , No . 314 , Preston , on January 8 , a distinction which , sve believe , has only been shared by one other brother during the

97 years the lodge has been in existence , viz ., the late Bro . T . M . Shuttlesvorth , P . P . S . G . W . West Lancashire . Bro . Barton Spencer svas exalted in the Royal Arch Chapter of Unanimity , No . 113 , Preston , on February 21 , 1877 , joined the Royal Architect Chapter , No . 314 , Preston , and was installed M . E . Z . of the

latter in 1886 , and again in 1887 . By reejuest , he acted in 1886 as Prov . G . Third Principal , and gave the oration at the consecration of the Lindsay Chapter , No . 1335 , Wigan , when the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres svas installed as First M . E . Z ., and in 188 7 he was appointed by Lord Lathom to be Prov . G ,

Prov . G . AL , of the Excelsior Lodge in Liverpool . In 1890 he was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . M . M . M ., a Grand Chaplain , and acted as such when H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , K . G ., svas installed at Brighton as Prov . G . M . M . M . of Sussex . Bro . Barton Spencer svas perfected in the Phillips Rose Croix Chapter , No . 180 , Lancaster , and is an officer of the

chapter . Resides preaching frequently at Masonic services on behalf of the various Masonic Charities , Bro . Barton Spencer svas a Steward at the Mark Benevolent Festival in 1890 , he is a Life Governor of the West Lancashire Educational Institution , and an annual subscriber to the West Lancashire Masonic Charities . that Rev . T . Barlosv Spencer has done good service in Freemasonry .
