( continued from page 621 . ) a nd lie also gave his thanks to Bro . ( Nameless ) for his generosity , which reflected honour 0 n himself and on the lodge . Bro . T . H . Bolton took it as a great honour to be present , and hoped their meeting ivas only the first of many other Misonic assemblies that would be graced by the
pres ence of ladies . Bro . Cruikshanks had referred to a gentleman with a past . He ( Bro . Bolton ) was a politician with a past . For the future he did not know whether he should get employment in politics , but he hoped to be of use to the profession . If in any way in a professional capacity he had been useful to the actors' profession , he could only say that he had been amply repaid in the thanks he had received and the recognition he | , ad had .
Bro . Cruikshanks , in rising to propose the toast of "Absent Friends , " said he had only to remind the company that they had toasted them already ; and why ? Because eight of their most prominent members were with Sir Henry Irving in Americ a , and when the cablegram was received they immediately reciprocated it with a replyfie would read what their dear old friend , Bro . Macklin , would have said if he had been there to say in connection with the toast of " Immediate Past Master , " as he had written to him to that effect . This is what he said in the letter : Dear VVorshipful
Master , I ask you to convey to the brethren and ladies present my thanks and appreciation of their remembrance of me , although we are so many thousand miles apart . I have endeavoured , so far as in my power , to place myself and other absent brethren here as much in touch as science will permit ; perhaps in a few years' time one may be able from here to propose a health through the telephone and perhaps indeed view ( he social board , from which , like Tantalus , one is precluded from partaking of , and only allowed to participate in the conviviality so far as a country that protects itself by
charging five dollars a bcttle for champagne will permit , and in this respect brethren will , I am sure , realise the extent of our appreciation of their good qualities when in their mind's eye they see us drinking to them in bumpers—and at midday too , for the difference in time gives us the advantage of beginning much earlier ; for whilst you are all enjoying yourselves at 5 p . m . we shall have only just commended at 12 and have the whole day before us . That is one advantage you see of being in a go ahead country at such a time . I must not let this occasion pass without thanking the brethren for their
loyal support of me during my year of office ; that year of office has been a truly p leasant one to me , enjoying as I have the confidence and affection of those whom I ruled over , making my sway easy and my work a labour of love . During my year , I have attended every lodge meeting excepting the present one , and endeavoured to keep up the reputation which this lodge has always borne . I have endeavoured to introduce more music into the ceremonies , being as we are in part a musical lodge . With this in mind , I arranged a concert for the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys ,
when , thanks to the able help of Bro . J . E . Hambleton , P . M ., and other members , we were enabled to take down an orchestra of 30 performers besides others who combined to make the concert a great success , a pleasure to our audience , and a credit to the Lodge of Asaph . Brethren , I thank you for the Past Master ' s jewel you have voted to me , and which I shall hope in due course to receive and wear . 1 may mention that I have attended several American lodges lately , and as W . M . of the Lodge cf Asaph , have been received as a distinguished guest , placed by the District Grand Master upon
his suite of Grand Officers when visiting lodges , and upon one occasion when , by his request , I had addressed the lodge , the Organist played our National Anthem as a compliment to English Freemasonry in general , and this lodge in particular . Brethren will excuse a little pardonable pride upon my part at having brought to a successful issue what I unfortunately have not been permitted to witness , viz ., the presence of ladies at our 25 th installation banquet . It seems hard that I should miss the sparkle of so many _ bright eyes , and the smiles from so many sweet lips ; but I feel sure that I shall have their gentle thoughts with me during this mortifying of the fksh upon my part .
Then , said Bro . Cruikshanks , follow some complimentary observations about myself which may be taken as read . ( Cries of " Read , read ! " ) No , certainly not . I have played parts in my time , but not that of self-advertising yet . In conclusion , Bro . Macklin says : Brethren , —you may have had better and more brilliant Masters than myself , and will , doubtless , have batter in the future , but I feel sure that you have never had a Master who has had the welfare of his lodge more at heart , or a greater desire to carry out the general principles of Freemasonry . I give you " Our Absent Friends . " The toast was drunk with the utmost enthusiasm , and concluded the toast list .
At the conclusion of the honouring of the toasts , a choice programme of vocal and instrumental music followed , which was performed by Mesdames Cecile Newling and Annie Buckland , and Miss Edith Cruikshanks ( daughter of the W . M . ) and Mrs , Cruikshanks , with Bros . Edward Branscombe , Ernest Marriott , Charles Stevens , Lewis Barrett , James A . Hamilton , J . E . Hambleton , P . M . 1 J 19 , Harry Randall , Ormond Yearsley , Henry Tolhurst , C . E . Tinney , P . M . and Org . 1310 , and Murray Carson .
Bro . J . C . Ames , P . P . G . Stwd ., performed on the "Janko" piano of Messrs . Broadwood , which that firm had kindly lent for the occasion , and the wonderful effects of which were ably brought out by Bro . Ames . Bro . Charles E . Tinney was the musical director during the evening . Bro . Harry Nicholls , P . M ., whom the VV . M . introduced as a " rising young actor , " to the great amusement of the party , gave an excellent recitation of " Had to do it . " The performances were of a very high order , and reflected the greatest credit on Bra . C . E . Tinney , P . M ., Organist of the lodge , and the other executants .
