I am sure there will be many sympathisers with Bro . Sir John Bennett in the troubles that have come upon him during the last few months , and which have culminated in the death of his wife , Lady Bennett . Many will regret the withdrawal of so striking a personality from the more active duties of civic life , in which he has played so conspicuous a part during the last 50 years . A man of undoubted genius ,
and of a liberal and generous disposition , he has devoted an enormous amount of time to the public service , and by free lectures all over the country , and in other ways he has done not a little to promote the cause of education and technical knowledge . _ I am glad to hear that his old friends of Cheap have just presented him with a testimonial of their esteem and regard . —City Press .

ot our own working people , so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT ,

BAKER BROTHERS ( LIMITED ) . —Amongst the numerous companies introduced to the investing public during the past few months , none has been more successfully floated than that of Baker Brothers . Formed to take over such well-known properties as the Angel Hotel and Restaurant , Islington , The Cock Hotel and Restaurant , Highbury , The Falstaff Restaurant , Eastcheap , and the Victoria Hotel ,
King's Cross , it was only to be expected that the applications for shares should have exceeded the number available for distribution . _ VVe believe , indeed , that the capital offered for subscription— £ 200 , 000—was , as nearly as possible , applied for twice over , and , although it was naturally found difficult to allot to some of the smaller applicants , we understand that , so far as practicable , the allotment has been made on a strictly pro rata basis . Of the properties in
question , one at least—the Angel—is almost historic , having been established a hundred years , but perhaps the Cock , at Highbury , is better known to many of our readers from the fact that it is largely used by the Fraternity for lodge meetings and banquets . We are pleased to note that " Brothers Baker " will continue the management of " Baker Brothers " on the same lines as heretofore for a period of at least five years .

headed by the Deanston Brass Band , inarched in torchlight procession to the East-end of the village , and thence by the railway station to Woodside Hotel . The procession attracted much attention , and was witnessed by a large crowd of people . AtS . 15 the company , to the number ot about 70 , sat down to supper in the spacious hall of the hotel , which had been tastefullv arranged for the
occasion-Bro . James A . M'Lean , R . W . M ., occupied the chair , and Bros . Rev . G . Williams , P . M ., and A . Winter , D . M ., acted as Croupiers . In the course of the evening , Bro . u . PRESENTATION TO BRO . W . S . ANDREWS . —On the 1 st inst ., a pleasing ceremony took place at Scotland Yard Detective Office , namely , the presentation to Bro . lex-Detective Inspector Walter S .
