the Executive Council of the Institute , which was held on Wednesday . The Lord Alayor of London was entertained bv the Corporation of Burntisland on Tuesday on the occasion of his visit , and in the evening a public banquet was given in his honour .
The Earl and Countess of Wemyss have just celebrated their golden wedding , but in consequence of the illness of their son , the Hon . Alan Charteris , there were no public rejoicings in connection with the auspicious event . It is rumoured that Ihe Duke and iDuchess of York will visit the city of York on the 5 th October , when the freedom of the city will be presented to his Royal Highness , as well as an address of congratulation on his marriage . The Duke will subsequently open a Free Library .

The competing yachts were the Prince of Wales ' s Britannia ami tne American cutter , Navahoe , the property of Mr . R . Phelps Carrol ' . The course was about 50 miles , and the Britannia won by 16 mm . 10 sees .
On Monday next , when the Queen has arranged to lay thc foundation-stone of the new parish church of Crathie , her Majesty will be presented with a handsome trowel in commemoration of the event . On the blade , which is of silver , is the inscription— " Presented to Her Majesty the Oueen on the occasion of laying the foundation-stone ol the parish church of Crathie , Sept , 11 , iSm . " The
handle is of ivory , and is terminated by a carved crown , the Royal monogram "V . R . I . " being engraved on the junction of the blade and handle . The first public function in London in which the Duke and Duchess of York , will tdke pare since their wedding will be to lay the foundation-stone of a new block of buildings now being erected in Poplar for seamen and sailor lads . The date will probably be the second week in October . The institution when opened will be an extension of the work carried on by the Missions to Seamen , of which the Dukeof Edinburgh is patron and the Earl of Aberdeen the
president . 1 he scheme embraces the erection and equipment of a church and institute , wherein lectures , literature , and recreation will lie provided , as well as a gymnasium , the institute to accommodate some 600 seamen . Darley has been engaged , by special permission of the Lords of the Admiralty , upon the gigantic task of reproducing the magnificent paintings , by Sir James Thornhill , on the ceilings and walls of the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital . approaching completion , and it is hoped that this splendid series of Masonic pictures will be purchased by someone who will present them to one or other of our national collections . • The Iirst of the series of International \ acht Races was sailed on VVednesday in the English Channel , the prize being the Victoria Challenge Cup , which must be secured three times out of the fiue courses that are to be sailed . The competing yachts were the Prince of Wales ' s Britannia ami tne American cutter , Navahoe , the property of Mr . R . Phelps Carrol ' . The course was about 50 miles , and the Britannia won by 16 mm . 10 sees .
On Monday next , when the Queen has arranged to lay thc foundation-stone of the new parish church of Crathie , her Majesty will be presented with a handsome trowel in commemoration of the event . On the blade , which is of silver , is the inscription— " Presented to Her Majesty the Oueen on the occasion of laying the foundation-stone ol the parish church of Crathie , Sept , 11 , iSm . " The
handle is of ivory , and is terminated by a carved crown , the Royal monogram "V . R . I . " being engraved on the junction of the blade and handle . The applications for membership in the Royal Societies Club now exceed Soo , including 65 from members of the Royal Society ( London and Edinburgh ) , and several from
the Athemuum . The keenest appreciation is shown of the objects of the Club , that of bringing together members of the Royal and learned Societies under the usual conditions of Club life , affording opportunities of social re-union . The line premises in St . James ' s-street , which have been acquired for the club-house , are being handsomely equipped , and will shortly be ready to receive members .

The first public function in London in which the Duke and Duchess of York , will tdke pare since their wedding will be to lay the foundation-stone of a new block of buildings now being erected in Poplar for seamen and sailor lads . The date will probably be the second week in October . The institution when opened will be an extension of the work carried on by the Missions to Seamen , of which the Dukeof Edinburgh is patron and the Earl of Aberdeen the
president . 1 he scheme embraces the erection and equipment of a church and institute , wherein lectures , literature , and recreation will lie provided , as well as a gymnasium , the institute to accommodate some 600 seamen . About ^ . 2000 is still required towards the cost ot the site and the 1 quipinent of the institute , and on the occasion of the inaugural ceremony the Duchess of York has kindly consented to receive purses in aid of this object .
Bro . Captain Darley presided , on Tuesday last , at the inaugural thrift meeting ( season ib ' y 3- < j 4 ) of the National Thrift Society , held at Greenwich . The address on this occasion was given by Bro . Bowden Green . There was a good attendance , and at the close of the meeting there was a distribution of thrift literature published by the Society . It is proposed to continue the present series of meetings in
various districts in and around London till next May . For a period of 10 years Bro . Darley has been engaged , by special permission of the Lords of the Admiralty , upon the gigantic task of reproducing the magnificent paintings , by Sir James Thornhill , on the ceilings and walls of the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital . The work is now
approaching completion , and it is hoped that this splendid series of Masonic pictures will be purchased by someone who will present them to one or other of our national collections .
