Provincial Grand Lodge Of North And East Yorkshire.
ever marked his lordship's conduct in the chair . The lodges are to be placed in mourning for six months to show our respect for one so revered and lamented . The time at our disposal will not permit more than a rapid glance at afew Masonic topics of interest to our province . In September last the D . P . G . M . dedicated the new Masonic Hall at Howden , and in the following month he consecrated the Albert Victor Lodge , No . 2328 , at York . This last valuable addition to our roll
brings the number of lodges to 30 , and vve are consequently enabled to appoint three additional officers in Provincial Grand Lodge . It is earnestly wished that those brethren who receive honours will not regard the same as merely an empty compliment , involving but one or two visits to Provincial Grand Lodge , but by regularly attending our annual assemblies prove that they take an interest in our proceedings . Those experienced Masons vvho have attained the dignities of the
Craft will encourage their younger brethren by showing that they are still desirous of advancing the cause of Freemasonry and of their own province in particular . An important event has been the publication of our learned Bro . Hughan ' s "History of th _ Apollo Lodge at York , " which contains a most interesting account of the formation of our Provincial Grand Lodge . The second festival of the North and East Yorkshire Educational Fund , held at Hull , on May 28 th , vvas a most
successful gathering , and the two Festivals have placed the fund in a hig hly satisfactory position . I was unable to be present , being in Ireland , and my Deputy was unfortunately too ill to attend . Bro . Woodall , P . G . T ., kindly presided , and ably filled the duties of the chair . The brethren will be glad to hear that a Masonic Club has been established at Hull , vvhich will no doubt prove a great convenience to brethren who visit that great centre of Masonry . We
must congratulate our literary Bro . Whytehead , on his appointment as Grand Sword Bearer of England , and hope he will long enjoy the honour vvhich has been conferred upon him . Invitations for holding our next year ' s meeting have been received from the Falcon , Old Globe , North York , and Denison Lodges . I beg to thank all those lodges for their kind invitations , and , after due consideration , finding that the former lodge invited us both last year and the year before , and
have been good enough to repeat their invitation for a third time , I have determined to accept the same , and hope to have the honour and pleasure of meeting the brethren next year at Thirsk . I beg to offer most sincere thanks to the members of the Old Globe , North York , and Denison Lodges for their kind invitations . A procession vvas then formed , and the brethren ( numbering about 300 ) proceeded in Masonic order to St . Michael's parish church , where divine service vvas
conducted by the Rev . G . A . Firth , vicar , and other clergy . The Rev . H . Lowther Clarke , M . A ., P . P . G . C , preached an eloquent sermon from the text 2 Ephesians viii . v . 14— " But by an equality , " & c The offertory , vvhich amounted to i , " n 6 s ., was equally divided between tbe Provincial Educational Fund and the Benevolent Fund of the Camalodunum Lodge . The procession vvas re-formed , the brethren returned to the Assembly Rooms , and having resumed their places , Bro .
Whytehead alluded to proposed stained-glass decorations in the Centenary Hall of the Royal Masonic Girls' School . A sum of £ 13 only vvas required to put in a window for this province , which would acquire two votes in perpetuity for the amount , and having received several promises of support , he advocated the opening of a subscription list for the purpose . The Prov . Grand Master observed that it would be out of order to make any proposition on the subject , notice not having
been given ; he had , however , no objection to a voluntary contribution to secure the two votes , and would be happy to put his name down . The Prov . Grand Master then thanked Bro . W . H . Rose , J . P ., P . P . G . W ., W . M . of the Camalodunum Lodge , and his brethren for their hospitable reception of Provincial Grand Lodge , and for the great attention paid to the arrangements for the meeting . His
lordship also thanked the members of the province for their support and numerous attendance , and moved a vote of thanks to Bro . the Rev . H . Lowther Clarke , P . P . G . Chaplain , for his able and excellent discourse , and also to the Vicar of St . Michael's Church , Bro . the Rev . G . A . Firth , for placing the church at their disposal , vvhich added so much to the impressiveness of the day ' s proceedings .
The vote of thanks vvas seconded by Bro . J . SYKES RYMER , vvho suggested that Bro . Clarke be requested to permit his sermon to be printed . The resolution vvas carried unanimously . The Provincial Grand Lodge vvas then closed . A banquet , at which the Provincial Grand Master presided , vvas subsequently held at the Talbot Hotel . A very large number of brethren dined , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured .

Grand Chapter having been formally opened , the minutes of the May Convocation vvere read by the Grand Scribe E . and confirmed . Comp . Col . SHADWELL H . CLERKE , G . S . E , next said that at the last meeting of Grand Chapter Viscount Valentia , vvho had been appointed by the Most Excellent Z . as Scribe N , was unavoidably prevented from being present , but his lordship was now in attendance and ready to be invested with the insignia of his oflice .
Viscount Valentia was then introduced and invested by the Acting M . E . Z . vvith his collar and robe of office , the Acting M . E . Z . stating that there vvas no one better deserving ot that great honour . The ACTING M . E . Z . next said : Companions , —Before we proceed to the business on the agenda paper , I am reminded that I ought to make a few remarks on the mournful event which has occurred since our last meeting , and which has caused
the companions throughout the world so much grief and sorrow . The emblems of mourning which you see around you will remind you of whom I am speaking of—the late Pro Grand First Principal , the Earl of Carnarvon . You have often heard his voice in this hall ; you know how excellently he discharged the duties of his office , whether in the Craft or the Royal Arch , and that anything he had to do was done well . It is therefore right that someone should propose that there be
recorded on the minutes the great grief Grand Chapter feels at the loss we have sustained . It occurs to me , as I am occupying the chair to-nig ht , that it is for me to have to say these few words . Perhaps I am also tolerably well qualified to speak of our late companion , because he vvas just leaving Oxford when 1 went to it . His splendid abilities had been accompanied with the hig hest honours the University could bestow , and we looked forward to him as one likely to make a great name in the world . He has left behind him a great reputation . It is also right that I
should make these remarks , because he was also a member of the Apollo University Lodge and also of the Westminster and Keystone Lodge . I need not say much because you all know what I feel , and you all feel the same . I move that there be recorded in the archives of this Grand Chapter a vote expressing the deep sense vve feel of the great loss that this Grand Chapter and Royal Arch Masonry has sustained by the death of the Pro Grand First Principal , the Earl of Carnarvon .
Comp . Col . MARMADUKE RAMSAY : I quite concur with the remarks of the Acting Grand Principal , and I have much pleasure in seconding the motion . The motion vvas carried unanimously . The following report of the Committee of General Purposes was , on thc motion of Comp . ROBERT GREY , seconded by Comp . FRANK RICHARDSON , taken as read , and received , and ordered to be entered on the minutes :
