Bro . Col . SHADWELL H . CLERKE , G . Sec , responded on behalf of " The Grand Officers , " remarking that the brethren could do no better than follow the Masonic zeal of ' the Grand Officers belonging to their province—the D . P . G . M ., P . G . Sec , and P . G . D . C . Bro . F . A . PHILBRICK , D . P . G . M ., then , amidst great cheering , gave the toast of " The P . G . M ., Lord Brooke , " remarking that that province was one vvhich , he

ventured to think , even Lord Brooke vvas proud to preside over . They were a united body of Masons , standing on a platform as broad and as comprehensive as any platform in the world . They vvere members of a great brotherhood , whose interests vvere as wide as humanity , and whose princip les vvere co-extensive with its interests . He concluded vvith an eulogium on the position of the Masonic body in the province , whose prosperity he knew would continue under the wise and genial rule of their respected chief , Lord Brooke .

The P . G . M ., who was enthusiastically received , said he attributed the position of the Masonic body in his province entirely to the fact that be had in his officers men of great tact , great judgment , and great experience in Masonic afiairs , and those brethren who had not yet enjoyed the sweets of office , but who , he trusted , looked forward to them some day , looked up to their leaders and showed a devotion to that great cause vvhich they all had at heart .

It being nearly time for the majority of the brethren to leave to catch the special tram , " The Health ofthe D . P . G . M . " vvas briefly proposed by Lord BROOKE , and as briefly acknowledged ; and , there being no time for another toast , Lord Brooke said he should not like to leave without thanking the brethren of the

Arnold Lodge for the admirable arrangements they had made for the meeting , and also for their liberal hospitality . His lordship then asked the Prov . Senior Grand Warden to take the chair , and under the presidency of Bro . Turner the toast list was continued . During the evening Miss Foxcroft gave charming selections of vocal music .

It only remains to add that the brethren of the Arnold Lodge did their best to make the meeting a success . The noble assembly room at the Clifton was handsomely decorated with flags and plants , while on the walls vvere hung the banners of the various lodges—from the age-stained banner of the Angel Lodge to the more elaborate ones of the recently consecrated lodges . Liberal provision was also made for the entertainment of their guests .

Miss Philbrick kindly , as on many previous occasions , sent a large supply of " button-holes , " which were much appreciated by the brethren . There vvere over 200 brethren present at the meeting .

Provincial Grand Lodge Of Hampshire And Isle Of Wight.

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT .

The annual meeting of this province vvas held at the I own Hall , Ryde , Isle of Wight , on Monday , the 28 th ult . The provincial meeting has only been held three times previously in the island since 18 33 , and it vvas 15 years ago since Ryde has been chosen . This year Ryde vvas again honoured , and Lodges Nos . 175 and 698 did their utmost to make the meeting the success it realised . These lodges appointed as Stewards for the occasion Bros . W . H . Provincial Grand Lodge Of Hampshire And Isle Of Wight.

The Prov . Grand Master , Deputy Grand Master , and Grand Lodge Officers were duly saluted , the roll of lodges called , and the minutes of tbe last annual and special meetings vvere read and confirmed . The PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER said that since their last meeting the Craft had received a great blow in the death of the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , who vvas especially well-known in the province as he had spent much time

in Hampshire . Whether it vvere members in or out of the province , they all regretted the loss . Personally , he felt it extremely , more so , perhaps , than many , as the earl was so closely associated vvith him . He ( the Provincial Grand Master ) initiated , passed , and raised him , installed him as W . M ., acted as First Principal vvith him in the Royal Arch , and installed him as Prov . G . M . of Somersetshire . In return the earl installed the speaker as Prov . G . M . nearly 21 years ago . His great qualities vvere known to the world at large , and on his recent stay in

Australia he advocated thc better connections between the colonies and the Grand Lodge of England , and succeeded in cementing the good feeling that should exist vvith the mother lodge . He wished to express the deep feeling of the brethren of the province to the family , and moved "That this Provincial Grand Lodge desire to express their most sincere regret at the loss which they have sustained by the death of the Ear ] of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , and their earnest sympathy with Lady Carnarvon and other members of the family . "

Bro . J . E . LE FEUVRE , D . P . G . M ., in seconding , remarked that every Mason in the province would gladly look back at the intimate connection of the late Pro Grand Master vvith the province , and they were always grateful for his services . This vvas unanimously recorded .

Bro . J . E . LE FEUVRE , D . P . G . M ., proposed the reception of the Audit report and accounts . He said that they stood much in the same position as last year , when they had a balance of . 643 6 and now they had . £ 442 , after paying the ordinary expenses , and contributing 150 guineas to the Charities , and £ 1 17 ios . to the fund for Bro . Binckes . The total assets amounted to . £ 1439 13 s . 6 d .

Bro . Rev . G . WYATT , P . M . 151 , P . P . S . G . W ., seconded , and it was carried unanimously . Bro . G . H . BARCLAY , P . M . 1373 , P . J . G . W ., highly eulogised the services of Bro . Gieve , and proposed his re-election as Prov . Grand Treasurer . Bro . G . A . MURSELL , P . M . 35 , P . P . S . G . D ., seconded , and it was carried unanimously .

Bro . GIEVE , P . M . 309 , returned thanks , and assured the brethren that nothing should be wanted on his part to serve them as hitherto . Bro . E . GouLE , P . G . Sec , read the report of the Prov . Grand Lodge Committee on grants of money for relief , and they recommended that the investments be increased to the sum of . £ 1000 , and that the ordinary annual contributions to the Masonic Charities should be supplemented by an additional grant of 50 guineas to each of the three central Masonic Charities , and ^ ' 20 tothe Hampshire Educational Institution .

' . chair , he did so , not from any lodge , but in recognition of his distinguished services to Freemasonry in general . He had lately made some valuable Masonic

researches and read a paper ( vvhich was afterwards accepted by the Prince of Wales ) before the Quatuor Coronati Lodge . In appointing Bro . G . Felton Lancaster as Prov . A . G . Sec , he had rendered most invaluable services to Freemasonry , especially to this province . He regretted losing Bro . Headley , who had hitherto held that office vvith great efficiency , but that brother had removed some distance away and vvas unable to do the justice to the office that he could wish . Bro . Headley had worked most indefatigably and the best thanks of the provincc were due to him .

The Prov . Grand Lodge vvas then closed . A large number of the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room and partook of a most recherche banquet , at vvhich the Stewards of the day vvere most assiduous in their attention to the brethren . A strong band occupied the orchestra , and discoursed some charming and appropriate music .

The PROV . GRAND MASTER occupied the chair , and , after ample justice had been done to the sumptuous table , proposed " The Health of the Oueen and the Craft , " " The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " and " The Deputy Grand Master and Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " Speaking on the latter the P . G . M . referred vvith deep feelings of regret at the deplorable loss of the Pro G . M . The Deputy Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Lathom , was always at his post , and vvas always ready to discharge his duties .
