Lincoln and the Misses Lincoln left London on Wednesday for Liverpool , whence the ladies proceeded in the Inman steamer City of New York for the United States , where they will remain for several months . They will be joined later in the year by Mr . Lincoln , who will then visit America on leave of absence .
Bro . the Earl of Jersey at the meeting of the Oxfordshire County Council , on Wednesday , referred to his approaching retirement , in consequence of her Majesty having appointed him to the Governorship of New South Wales . Lodge Dramatic and Arts , 757 , Edinburgh , has undertaken the production of a book of sketches , artistic and literary , as a souvenir of the bazaar , the proceeds to-be devoted to the bazaar fund . This , then , is the explanation of the reported " New Amphion " mentioned in Mems . of June 17 th .
When "The Cabinet Minister" is reproduced by-and-by at the Court , Mr . Herbert Waring will not rejoin the cast . He has just declined a tempting offer from America . —Mr . C Denton has acquired the rights of a new farcical comedy , called " A Young Pretender , " vvhich he proposes to
introduce shortly to a London audience . —Mr . VV . J . Lawrence contributes to the current number of the Gentleman ' s Magazine a very readable paper on Irish character in English dramatic literature . Mr . VV . Poel writes in the National Review on ihe stage in Elizabeth ' s time .

covers can be easily carried in one ' s pocket . They are admirably adapted for holiday reading . The four volumes already published are Fenimore Cooper ' s " Last of the Mohicans , " Thackeray ' s " Yellovvplush , " Bulwer Lytton's " Last Days of Pompeii , " and Ware ' s " Last Days of Palmyra . "
Some slight but effective alterations have been made in the last act of "The Judge , " which is drawing large ancl appreciative audiences to Terry ' s Theatre . old sweetheart are handcuffed by the silly policeman has been elaborated , and vvith very good results , " VVe are very much attached to each other , " says the judge of himself and the lady , and much laughter is excited by the quip . Speech Day at Christ ' s Hospital this year was an event of special interest in view of the changes about to be made . reference to the late Bro . Rev . Ur . P . H . E . Brette -. "There cannot have been a Blue , past or present , amongst all vvho have ever had dealings vvith him who did not feel a pang of sorrow on hearing the unexpected news of the almost sudden death of the late head French Master , Bro . the Rev . Dr . Brette . Of his great powers and scholarship , the many honours he gained , and the high distinction he constantly received are more than sufficient proof , but great as
these were it is for his work and influence amongst us here that Dr . Brette ' s memory will be cherished . Of his kindness and generosity , his patience and consideration , all vvho knew him can conscientiously testify . He identified himself vvith Christ ' s Hospital , and remained vvith his heart in his work even up to the last . A worthy successor has been found in the person of Mons . Bue , whom vve heartily welcome amongst us to-day . "
THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury
of our own working people , so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT .

Messrs . Cassell and Co . have begun to issue a cheap reprint , in uniform printing and binding , of favourite English novels , including American novels . The paper is of a fine , silky , and very thin description , but that does not mar the clearness and the boldness of the type . The volumes are wonderfully cheap , and in their limp , white
covers can be easily carried in one ' s pocket .
For one thing , the "baby" has been wholly eliminated from the act , in deference , we suppose , to those austere persons vvho thought that there was " too much" of the engaging infant . In addition , the scene in vvhich the judge and his
old sweetheart are handcuffed by the silly policeman has been elaborated , and vvith very good results , " VVe are very much attached to each other , " says the judge of himself and the lady , and much laughter is excited by the quip . Bro . Penley has settled down into his part , and is very droll throughout . Everything goes very smoothly , and the piece , vvhich overflows vvith fun , may now be seen at its best .
Speech Day at Christ ' s Hospital this year was an event of special interest in view of the changes about to be made . A scheme for the reconstruction of this ancient foundation being now finally approved by the Government authorities . Wednesday , the 30 th ult ., was . therefore , the last Speech Day under the existing order of things . The English oration delivered by the Captain contained the following
reference to the late Bro . Rev . Ur . P . H . E .
—ADVT .
