M . explained that the lodge of emergency was summoned for the purpose of raising Bro . Von der Sahl , ivho anticipated going abroad for a short time . As he and Bro . Ball , P . M ., were very old friends , Bro . Ball had
expressed a wish to perform the ceremony . The W . M . said he had much p leasure in acceding to that wish and vacating the chair in his favour . The first portion of the ceremony was therefore rendered by Bro . Ball , when the W . M . resumed the chair and completed it . The duties of each of the brethren were performed in a most admirable manner .
The lodge was then closed . It being a glorious spring day the brethren separated according to their bent , and an hour or two was passed in strolls in the neighbourhood . They assembled again in the evening , when an enjoyable repast was partaken of , after which the customary toasts were briefly proposed and as briefly responded to .

John Shaw , who being personally known to and held in much esteem by many members of the lodge , received a very hearty welcome into the Order . The ceremony was most ably carried out by the popular Master of the lodge , Bro . C . F . Quicke , who is serving his second year of office as VV . M . of this well-known lodge . At the dinner which followed the meetimr . the W . M .
made a special feature of the toast of " The Provincial Grand Master , Earl Amherst , " whose birthday it chanced to be . The meeting fully endorsed the remarks of the W . M ., that few provinces possessed so able and devoted a Grand Master as Earl Amherst . Bro . Nevill , P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The Worshipful Master , " was most felicitous in his remarks .
He reminded the brethren of the debt of gratitude they owed to the present estimable Master for the untiring efforts he had made on behalf of the lodge for a number of years . Quite an ovation followed , and Bro . Quicke was most cordially greeted by all present . In replying to thc toast of his health , the W . M . referred to the special pleasure it had given him that day to initiate Mr . John Shaw into
Freemasonry , both on the grounds of personal friendship , and also for the privilege of being colleagues in the same company . Bro . Dettmer responded in a capital speech to the toast of "The Masonic Charities , " and Bro . Shaw suitably responded to the toast of " The Initiate . " The brethren and visitors contributed to the enjoyment of the evening , and all expressed their pleasure at being present at the opening meeting of the year of the lodge .

lhe lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a capita ] supper , which was well partaken of . The cloth removed , the Worshipful Master gave the loyal and Masonic toasts in capital style , which were well received .

M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were given with a few very appropriate remarks , and received quite loyally . The next toast was that of " The Prov . G . M ., Deputy Prov . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers ,
Present and Past , " the W . M . remarking that they were honoured by thc presence of the D . P . G . M ., and their heartiest thanks were clue to him for the eminent services he had rendered the Iodge . It was hoped at a meeting to be called on May the 5 th their appreciation would be shown in a most tangible form . The toast was received with acclamation .
In reply , Bro . West , D . P . G . M ., stated he had already spoken on behalf of the Grand Oflirers , to the effect that the Pro Grand Master had honoured them by installing the P . G . M . of Surrey on the last occasion , which added to the prestige . It gave him great pleasure to be there that night at the lodge named after so good a Mason as the late Bro . George Price . He heard read in lodge the resignation of
Bro . Hobbs , which he greatly regretted , as he was a most valuable brother . He urged the initiates to emulate all that was good . For his part he must state at once that whenever he saw a worthy brother doing excellent work , so it was his endeavour to reward such , but not otherwise . For such a cordial greeting he heartily thanked the brethren . The toast of "The VV . M . " was given in high terms of
praise by Bro . Goode , I . P . M ., stating that the VV . M . had taken up as Steward to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution £ 337 , which was the highest in the province . In reply , the Worshipful Master thanked all most sincerely for their cordial greeting . He had had a most happy and successful year , and was delighted lis had given such satisfaction . A very worthy brother was about to follow
him , whom he hoped would have another such year . The next toast was the importantoneof " The Initiates , " which the VV . M . gave in very appropriate terms . The Initiates responded with thanks for their reception , and a desire to make themselves acquainted with the beautiful ceremony they had witnessed , and to prove themselves worthy . The toast of "The Past Masters" was given in a few
well-chosen remarks , and responded to by Bros . Goode and Cambridge very ably . " The Visitors " followed with a very hearty greeting from the VV . M ., and was as equally well received by the brethren . Bros . Burns and Rev . C . Painter very suitably responded . The toast of "The Ollieers" was given by the VV . M .
eulogising their work and thanking them for past services , and replied to with thanks and good promise lor the future . The Tyler's toast closed a very delightful evening . Bros . Royal Sussex Lodge ( No . 191 ) . —One of the most interesting and successful gatherings held under thc banner of ibis increasingly popular arid prosperous lodge took place on Monday , the 28 th ultimo , at the Alasonic Temple , Stopford-road , the occasion being the 49 th anniversary and the installation of Bro . F . A .
Juhel as VV . M . for the ensuing year , who has been for some years a respected and highly esteemed member of the lodge . 'There was a full attendance of the members of the lodge and a large number of visitors , among whom were some 20 members of the Provincial Grand Lodge . The lodge room , which has been recently decorated in a most elaborate and recherche style , looked very imposing with

Altogether a most pleasurable and happy evening was spent , which the Tyler ' s toast terminated all to soon for those who were present . The artistic skill and great ingenuity displayed in the redecoration of the ante and reading rooms and of the refectory was much admired , and loudly praised by all present .

Bailey , Almoner , gave some interesting particulars relating to the progress and management of the benevolent institutions , which work he thought should stimulate the bretnren to continue the good and holy work of affording relief and assistance to distressed brethren , their widows and orphans , thus demonstrating to the world that their profession of brotherhood was thoroughly real in its character .

M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were given with a few very appropriate remarks , and received quite loyally . The next toast was that of " The Prov . G . M ., Deputy Prov . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers ,
Present and Past , " the W . M . remarking that they were honoured by thc presence of the D . P . G . M ., and their heartiest thanks were clue to him for the eminent services he had rendered the Iodge . It was hoped at a meeting to be called on May the 5 th their appreciation would be shown in a most tangible form . The toast was received with acclamation .
In reply , Bro . West , D . P . G . M ., stated he had already spoken on behalf of the Grand Oflirers , to the effect that the Pro Grand Master had honoured them by installing the P . G . M . of Surrey on the last occasion , which added to the prestige . It gave him great pleasure to be there that night at the lodge named after so good a Mason as the late Bro . George Price . He heard read in lodge the resignation of
Bro . Hobbs , which he greatly regretted , as he was a most valuable brother . He urged the initiates to emulate all that was good . For his part he must state at once that whenever he saw a worthy brother doing excellent work , so it was his endeavour to reward such , but not otherwise . For such a cordial greeting he heartily thanked the brethren . The toast of "The VV . M . " was given in high terms of
praise by Bro . Goode , I . P . M ., stating that the VV . M . had taken up as Steward to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution £ 337 , which was the highest in the province . In reply , the Worshipful Master thanked all most sincerely for their cordial greeting . He had had a most happy and successful year , and was delighted lis had given such satisfaction . A very worthy brother was about to follow
him , whom he hoped would have another such year . The next toast was the importantoneof " The Initiates , " which the VV . M . gave in very appropriate terms . The Initiates responded with thanks for their reception , and a desire to make themselves acquainted with the beautiful ceremony they had witnessed , and to prove themselves worthy . The toast of "The Past Masters" was given in a few
well-chosen remarks , and responded to by Bros . Goode and Cambridge very ably . " The Visitors " followed with a very hearty greeting from the VV . M ., and was as equally well received by the brethren . Bros . Burns and Rev . C . Painter very suitably responded . The toast of "The Ollieers" was given by the VV . M .

Juhel as VV . M . for the ensuing year , who has been for some years a respected and highly esteemed member of the lodge . 'There was a full attendance of the members of the lodge and a large number of visitors , among whom were some 20 members of the Provincial Grand Lodge . The lodge room , which has been recently decorated in a most elaborate and recherche style , looked very imposing with

Altogether a most pleasurable and happy evening was spent , which the Tyler ' s toast terminated all to soon for those who were present . The artistic skill and great ingenuity displayed in the redecoration of the ante and reading rooms and of the refectory was much admired , and loudly praised by all present .

In responding to " The Alasonic Charities , " Bro . Bailey , Almoner , gave some interesting particulars relating to the progress and management of the benevolent institutions , which work he thought should stimulate the bretnren to continue the good and holy work of affording relief and assistance to distressed brethren , their widows and orphans , thus demonstrating to the world that their profession of brotherhood was thoroughly real in its character .
In giving "The Health of the Officers , " the VV . M . spoke hopefully of the help he expected from them . Iiro . C . Mead , S . VV ., responding , said he hoped the year before them would be marked by good work anil faithful attention to duty . Bro . If . J . Bragg , J . W ., expressed a wish that the Worshipful Master ' s anticipations with respect to his fellow officers and himself might be hilly realised .
