meeting that day under a cloud of deep sorrow . One had been taken from their midst whom they all deeply loved , her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria , of blessed memory . They all deeply sympathised with the King and the other members of the Royal Family , and Grand Lodge had thought it proper , and they thought s ) as well , that there should be nothing of a festive character in connection with the installation ; but the brethren would be called off for tea during the ceremony in the lower room . The Prov . G . Secretary had also intimated that as Grand Lodge would frame a letter of

condolence to the King , it would not be necessary for individual lodges to do so ; but such resolution of sympathy could be passed and placed on the minutes , and before proceeding with the regular business he would propose : " That a dutiful expression of our most profound sorrow and sympathy be passed with their Majesties the King and Q ueen and the Royal Family in the irreparable loss which their Majesties , the Royal Family , and the whole Empire have sustained , and particularly the Isle of Wight , where our beloved Queen resided for so many vears , in the death of their dearly loved and revered

Sovereign ; and that , as a lodge , we approve of the postponement of the installation banquet announced by the W . M . elect , Bro . John Chapman , as a tribute of our loyalty and love for the memory of our late Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria . " A large number of apologies were read from distinguished brethren , who , through unavoidable circumstances , were unable to be present . The Audit Committee presented the balance-sheet , which was of a most encouraging character , Bro . Alfred Greenham's Jubilee scheme having extinguished the interest on ths mortgage , so

placing the lodge on a good financial footing . The receipts for the year were £ 418 , and expenses £ 328 2 s . 3 d . The installation of Bro . Chapman was then proceeded with , Bros . F . Cooper , P . M ., and John Bailey , P . M ., taking the Senior and Junior Wardens ' chairs . The W . M ., Bro . A . Greenham , was the Installing Mister , and th ? ceremony was performed in a very able manner . Bro . Col . Lumsden , Prov . Grand Master Aberdeenshire , gave the addresses to the officers and brethren . The impressivenessof these addresses , by their excellent delivery , will never be forgotten . The W . M . then invested

the officers as follows : Bros . C . J . Carter , S . W . j E . Le Jefford , J . W . ; brands Cooper , P . M ., Treas . ; Rev . Neville Lovett , Chap . ; F . C . Taylor , Sec . j A . Kent , S . D . j W . T . Deek , J . D . ; H . J . Osborne , LG . ; and J . Collinson and VV . R . Spencer , Stewards . Before closing the lodge , the W . M . said he wished to recognise the valuable services of the Installing Master , Bro . A . Greenham . He felt that Bro . Greenham had , by his zeal for Masonry , contributed largely to the prospeiity of the Chine Lodge . He also wished to thank Bro . Col . Lumsden for so generously consenting

to give the addresses . He had never heard them more eloquently delivered . He would propose "That the best thanks of the lodge be accorded Bro . Col . Lumsden and Bro . Greenham fortheir services . " Seconded by Bro . John Bailey , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., and carried unanimously . Col . Lumsden , in reply , expressed the pleasure it gave him to be present . The ceremony was in itself very beautiful , and if his efforts ir . rendering it that evening had given them pleasure , he was more than gratified . He was proud of being a member of Chine Lodge , and as it had done such excellent work under

preceding able Masters , he hoped it would go into even greater thinjs under their present and succeeding Masters . Bro . Greenham , replying to the vote of thanks , observed that the brethren felt highly honoured by the services rendered by Bro . Col . Lumsden , as it was the first time a ceremony had been performed in an English lodge by a Scotch Provincial Grand Master . He did not require any praise , as he had only done his duty . The W . M . next presented two Past Masters' jewels—one to Bro . John Bailey , P . M ., and the other to Bro . Alfred Greenham , I . P . M . These brethren suitably acknowledged

the gift , Bro . Bailey observing it was the hope of reward that sweetened labour , and although he valued the gift , he valued more what was behind the gift—the love of his brethren . Bro . Greenham , after thanking the brethren , explained that the reason the ' lodge was in arrears with Past Masters' jewels was their determination to get out of debt before presenting them , this they had done , and would make ths deficiencies trom 1 SS 1 each year . A cordial vote of thanks was accorded the Prov . Grand Secretary for his services , who , in a very eloquent speech , spoke of his connection with the lodge from the time of the great Masonic Exhibition . He always felt a pleasure in attending the

lodge to witness the very excellent working of the ceremonies , and he wished them a very prosperous New Year . Bro . Greenham presented the lodge with a framed record of the proceedings at the Jubilee Commemoration Banquet , lt was not for its intrinsic value he was making this presentation , * but he thought , in the future , those proceedings would be looked back at , and what was there laid down would be a guid : of action in dealing with the lodge building , which was now free from debt . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro . Greenham for his gift . A vote of co-idjlence was passed to Bro . A . H . Brown , who had so recently lost his wife . The lodge wis closed .

Sir Charles Bright Lodge , No . 1793 . Lodge was opened , reference being made to the irreparable loss Freemasonry had sustained by the lamented death of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria , Grand Patroness of the Order , and a resolution with reference thereto was recorded on the minutes . Mr . Henry Cross was elected and duly initiated into the mysteries of the Order , and Bios . Merchant , Oberti , and Shave were passed to the Second Degree , the ceremonies in each case being impressively rendered by the Worshipful Master . The election of Worshipful Master for the ensuing year

resulted in an interesting feature ; owing to ill-health both Wardens had resigned membership , consequently it was necessary to elect one oi the P . Ms , to occupy the important position . The brethren embraced this opportunity to pay a high compliment to an old and esteemed member , Bro . R . W . Foige , the senior member and one of the founders of the lodge , and who occupied the W . M . 's chair just 21 years ago , and subsequently filled the office of Treasurer . Bro . W . Middleweek , another popular P . M .,

was elected to fill the latter office . A sum of money was voted to a brother in distress , and a petition , numerously signed in his behalf , was directed to be sent to the Prov . G . Secretary for presentation to the Board of Benevolence . The W . M . was elected to represent the lodge at the forthcoming Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and a Past Master's jewel was voted to him tor his excellent services during the year .
