We have been favoured wilh the usual summary of the work accomplished during the past year by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution . The total number of lives saved is 361 , a very large proportion of which would no doubt have been lost but for the assistance rendered by the boats of this society . There were likewise 19 vessels rescued by their means from being totally wrecked or
brought safely into harbour . There were in addition 102 occasions on which , in response to signals of distress , boats had been launched , and the lives of the crews placed in jeopardy , but without result , the signals having been made in error , or assistance not being required . The society also granted rewards for the rescue by shore and fishing boats of 1 S 4 lives , making a grand total saved during the
year by its instrumentality of 545 lives , and from its foundation of 31 , 900 . VVith such a record as this we trust the contributions to this splendid institution will flow in liberally , as the cost of maintaining its 290 lifeboats is very heavy . All monies will be thankfully received by all London and country bankers , as well as bylthe Secretary , Mr . Charles Dibdin , 14 , John street , Adelphi , W . C .
WAITING IN THE SNOW * . —Heartrending as are the scenes to be witnessed at the East End at the best of times , we doubt if ever a sight more pitiable was seen than that , yesterday , outs'de the doors of the London Cottage Mission Hall , in Salmon's-lane , Limehouse . lt was the day of the poor children ' s weekly Irish stew dinner , and the hot and plentiful meal they have now learnt to look
forward to so eagerly was to be ready at noon ; but long before that , despite the heavy snow and the deep , halffrozen slush underfoot , the half-naked , hungry , shivering crowd thronged Salmon ' s-lane . It would have been a hard heart , indeed , that kept them waiting there , and long bi fore the appointed hour Miss N ' apton . the Lady Superintendent , had the doors thrown open . The first rush soon filled the
hall , and their less fortunate little brothers and sisters outside had to wait their turn . Happily , we are glad to say , the hall was filled again and again , till close upon a thousand children , with some old folks and women , went away with a substantial inward protection against the storm raging * without . If these weekly dinners are to continue—and if
this weather lasts , as it seems likely to do , they are more wanted than ever—let every charitable heart and open hand send all the help they can to Miss Napton , 304 , Burdettroad , Limehouse , or to the managing director , Mr . Walter Austin , at the offices of the Mission , 41 , Finsburypavement , E . C .
