Memorial To The Late Bro. Professor Shuttleworth.
MEMORIAL TO THE LATE BRO . PROFESSOR SHUTTLEWORTH .
A large and influential meeting was held on Monday afternoon at St . Paul's Chapter House for the purp ose of setting on foot a subscription for a memorial to the late Bro . Profes sor Shuttleworth , rector of St . Nicholas Cole Abbey . In the unavoidable absence of the Bishop of London , the Bishop of Stepney presided , and among those present were Mr . Leonard Courtney , Bro . Alderman Sir William Treloar , Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Vaughan Morgan , Mr . G . W . E . Russell , and Dr . Wace .
The Bishop of STEPNEY explained that they were met to do honour to a man of a remarkably lovable character , possessed of wonderful zeal and energy . Moreover , the professor was an exceedingly generous man , and was inclined to spend perhaps too freely when appeals for help were made to him . All felt that his great services to the Church and to the social lite of the City claimed a public acknowledgment , and as his premature death had placed his family in circumstances in which assistance was much needed , their thoughts naturally turned in that direction .
Mr . LEONARD COURTNEY spoke to the propriety of a memorial . To all the professor was known as a thorough Cornishman , and they in London knew what pains he took in gathering around him men who had migrated from that county , and in securing the success of the annual Cornish dinner . When he came to be incumbent of a City church they saw something of the zeal with which he drew people to the services . Whatever he found to do , he did it with his might .
Bro . Alderman Sir WILLIAM TRELOAR hoped they would do something to show their appreciation of their late friend and there interest in those he had left behind .
Bro . Alderman and Sheriff VAUGHAN MORGAN proposed that the form of the memorial be a fund to make provision for Professor Shuttleworth ' s wife and family . Prebendary WACE seconded , saying that , besides the other virtues already attributed to him , Professor Shuttleworth possessed a most generous faculty of self-effacement .
Mr . G . W . E . RUSSELL said that his friendshi p with the professor dated from their undergraduate days at Oxford . Just previous to his death , Professor Shuttleworth expressed to him a fervent desire that his son should have the benefit of an Oxford education .
Dr . BAKER supported the resolution , which was unanimousl y carried . To promote the objects a committee was formed . Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair was appointed chairman , and Mr . R . Petherbrid ge ( St . Paul ' s Chapter House ) hon . secretary . Subscribers to the fund already include the Bishops of London , Truro , and Stepney , Bro . J . Passmore Edwards , the Mayor of Falmouth ( Mr . F . j . Bowles ) , Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Vaughan Morgan , Bro . Alderman Sir W . Treloar , Mr . Leonard Courtney , snd Mr . J . L . Barrett .

J . L . Barrett .
