THE PROVINCE OF SURREY .

Surrey , which , as a Masonic Province , dates from the year 1772 , has , so far as it is possible to judge , been always most fortunate in its rulers . At all events , it would be difficult to name one which during the latter half of the present century

has fared better in this respect . In 1850 its Provincial Grand Master was the late Bro . ALEXANDER DouiE , whose first appointment to office in Grand Lodge was in 1838 , when hc received the collar of Junior Grand Deacon . From 1841 to 1 849 he

presided over the Board of General Purposes , while from 18 4 6 to 1857 ne l "* ' - > •' - f ° P ai't of the time concurrently with the presidency of the said Board , the important post of Grand Registrar . ln the Royal Arch—and he was Grand Superintendent as well as Provincial Grand Master—he attained even

greater distinction , and having served as Grand Scribe N . from 18 38 to 18 45 , and as Grand Registrar from 1846 to 1856 , was appointed Grand Third Principal J . from 18 5 G to 1858 . Bro . DOME was appointed to preside over the Craft and Royal Arch

Masonry in Surrey in 18 47 , and died in 18 7 6 , having , however , a few years previously resigned his ollices . On his resignation , Bro . General J . STUDHOLME BROWNRIGG , C . B ., who served as Senior Grand Warden in 185 S , was , in 18 71 , appointed

Provincial Grand Master , and , in 1873 , Grand Superintendent , of Surrey ; and after his death the late Bro . Col . G . NOKL MONEY , C . B ., was installed as both Provincial Grand Master and Grand Superintendent , in 1 S 91 . In 1895 , a successor to the late Bro .

Col . MONEY was found in the Earl of ONSLOW , G . C . M . G ., who had been appointed Senior Grand Warden of Grand Lodge in 1 SS 0 , and Grand Scribe N . in Supreme Grand Chapter in 1883 , and his lordship was installed as Provincial Grand Master and Grand

Superintendent ; but finding thc claims upon his time in . matters official and private too heavy , hc announced at thc last annual meeting of his Provincial Grand Lodge that he had found it necessary to tender his resignation , which his Royal Highness

the M . W . G . M . had been pleased to accept , and that he was only retaining office until such time as his successor , Bro . Col . JOHN DAVIS , A . D . C . to her Majesty the QUEEN , was able to undertake

doubt , continue to prosper as it has done under those of his predecessors . That this prosperity has been continuous and gratifying may be gathered from the following particulars relating to the lodges now on thc roll of the Province—we take no heed of those

which may have been warranted and become extinct or migrated to other quarters in the interim . When , in 18 47 , Bro . DOBIE became Prov . G . Master and G . Superintendent , there were five of the existing lodges on the roll , namely , the

St . Georges Lodge , No . 370 , Chertsey , of 1823 creation ; the Grove Lodge , No . 410 , Sutton , and the Surrey Lodge , No . 416 , Reigate , which were warranted in 1832 ancl 18 34 respectively ; and the Frederick Lodge of Unity , No . 452 , and the Crovdon

Lodge of Concord , No . 4 63 , both meeting in Croydon , and warranted , the former in 1838 , and the latter in the following year . The number of Royal Arch chapters was three , comprising the Frederick Chapter of Unity , No . 452 , warranted in 18 39 ; thc

Grove Chapter , No . 410 , in 1840 ; and the St . George ' s Chapter , No . 370 , in 1843 . Under Bro . DOBIE the roll of lodges was more than doubled , the Royal Alfred , No . 777 , Guildford , warranted in 1859 , being the oldest of the six lodges , and having

been followed at intervals by the Dobie Lodge , No . 8 S 9 , dating from 1 S 61 , which perpetuates the memory of his ' services , and is located at Kingston ; the St . Andrew ' s Lodge , No . 1046 , Farnham , warranted in 1 S 6 ' . ; the Dorking Lodge , No . 1149 , meeting

in the town of the same name , and founded in 186 7 ; and the Lome and Royal Albert Edward Lodges , Nos . 1347 : in ( l l 3 & 2 respectively , and both warranted in 18 71 , the former meeting at

Sutton and the latter at Red Hill . There was also one chapter constituted , namely , the Croydon Chapter of Concord , No . 4 63 , which was warranted in 1863 .

'Under the late Bro . General BROWNRIGG ' auspices , there were constituted as many as 25 lodges and eight chapters , so that , whereas when he acceded to office , the Province contained onl y 11 lodges and four chapters , the numbers when death removed him

wcre 36 lodges and 12 chapters respectively . There is no need for us to give the full list , but it maybe well lo mention lhat among thc lodges will be found the Brownrigg , No . 16 3 8 , which perpetuates the fame of this genial and able ruler ; the Arnold , No . 1981

named after a former Dep . Prov . Grand Master ; the Greenwood , so designated in memory of the late Bro . CHARLES GREENWOOD who for so many years was Prov . Grand Secretary ; the Georgt Price Lodge , No . 2096 , after a late Prov . Grand Treasurer ; tin

Frederick West , No . 2222 , so-named after one who has served and is still serving the Province most ably as Dep . Prov . Grand Master ; and the Onslow , No . 2234 , which bears the honoured title of the retired Prov . Grand Master . The further additions

made lo the roll while the Province was in charge of the lale Bro . Col . NOEL MONEY , consisted of six lodges and four chapters , the former comprising thc Ebbisham , No . 2422 , Epsom , and the Noel , No . 2444 , Kingston , both founded in 1892 ; the

Molesey Lodge , No . 2473 , East Molesey , in 1 S 93 ; the Gatwick , No . 2502 , Horley , and the Noel-Money Lodge , No . 2521 , Wevbridgc , both warranted in 1 894 ; and the limber Lodge , No . 2540 , which was consecrated b y the Prov . Grand Master earl y in

18 95 . In the Earl of ONSLOW ' S time , three lodges were warranted—the Albany , No . 2652 , Kingston , in 18 97 ; the I latchlands Lodge , No . 2756 , Addlestone , and the liast Surrey Lodge , No .

27 G 9 , Oxted , both belonging to thc year 18 99 . The Royal Albert Edward Chapter , No . 13 62 , Red Hill , entered upon its career in 18 95 .
