Islington Chapter ( No . 1471 ) . — The installation meeting of this flourishing chapter was held at the Cock Tavern , Highbury , on Wednesday , the 29 th ult ., when over 50 companions attended . Comp . W . Shurmur , to whose efforts the phenomenal success of the chapter is in a great measure due , commenced his third year of office as M . E . Z ., and some idea of the work performed by him in this capacity may be gathered from the fact that during the

past year he exalted 26 brethren into Royal Arch Masonry , and received 14 joining companions as members . The members present included Comps . W . Shurmur , M . E . Z . j J . M . Scarlett , J . s H . Cox , Treas . j Sidney Napper , S . E . s R . Loomes , S . N . s W . E . Sutton , P . S . s J- Terry , P . G . S . B . ; G . F . Cook , P . Z . ; W . S . Whitaker , P . Z . ; W . Letters of regret for non-attendance were announced from Comps . Col . Shadwell H . Gierke , G . S . E . ;

F . A . Philbrick , O . C ., G . Reg . j Lennox Browne , Asher Barfield , P . G . Treas .,- VV . Darnell , P . Z . j Luxmore Marshall , W . J . Rundell , P . Z . s and S . Barton Wilson . Other business was transacted , and the convocation was formally closed . An excellent banquet was admirably served under the superintendence of Comp . Sams , and was followed by the

usual toasts . Comp . W . S . Whitaker , I . P . Z ., said that all Masons had duties , very similar and important , to perform , and they ought also to have pleasure . He was in that happy position to ask them to combine the two by drinking "The Health of the M . E . Z . " It was unnecessary for him to dilate upon Comp . Shurmur ' s excellences , for they knew them

well , and had given that companion convincing proofs of their opinion of him , inasmuch as he had been installed for the third time in the chair of that chapter . They were pleased to see Comp . Shurmur presiding , knowing he had performed the duties well , and could , and would , perform them well in the future . It was somewhat unusual to propose the M . E . Z . ' s health for the third year in succession ,

but he did so with great pleasure , and was gratified to be enabled to pin upon Comp . Shurmur ' s breast the P . Z . ' s jewel , with an additional bar , commemorative of the completion of his second year of office . In conclusion , he trusted the M . E . Z . would live long to wear the jewel with contentment and pleasure . Comp . W . Shurmur , M . E . Z ., in reply , said he was deeply

grateful to the members for the exceedingly high compliment they had conferred , in having unanimously , for the third time , elected him to preside as First Principal over so highly important a chapter . During the past two years they had more than doubled their numbers , and during the past 12 months it had been their proud privilege to exalt into Royal Arch Masonry 26 candidates , and also to receive

14 companions as joining members , making a total of 40 new members in one year , all of whom they would be proud to meet anywhere . It was indeed a very great honour , and certainly unique , to be elected for the third time to the principal chair of such an important chapter . He most gratefully thanked the I . P . Z . for the kind manner

in which he had proposed the toast , and also sincerely thanked the companions for their cordial reception of the toast , for their unanimous support in the chapter , and also for the generous manner in which they had replied to his appeals on behalf of the Charities , enabling him to take up 50 guineas to the R . M . I . B ., and a similar amount to the

R . M . B . I . In proposing " The H . and J ., " Comp . Shurmur , M . E . Z ., said it had been his privilege to be associated with Comp . Scarlett , H ., from the very commencement of his career in Freemasonry . He had seen Comp . Scarlett work in the different offices in the Craft with credit to himself and advantage to the lodge , and had seen him discharge his

duties as W . M . in a provincial lodge , which had so commended itself to the provincial authorities that he had been appointed Prov . J . G . D . They could judge of his work in Royal Arch Masonry , having heard him deliver the lecture that evening . As to their good friend , Comp . Church , J ., he could not speak too highly in his praise , as anything he took in hand he carried out under the advice of their Grand

Master , King Solomon— " Whatever thy hand findeth to do , do it with all thy might . " In the Clapton Lodge Comp . Church ' s Mastership would constitute an era . Comp . J . M . Scarlett , H ., thanked the M . E . Z . for his kind and flattering remarks , but must add that ever since he had been associated with Comp . Shurmur he had endeavoured to emulate him .

Comp . W . D . Church , J ., in response , said he would endeavour to do his duty in this , his mother chapter , as he had done in his mother lodge . He had visited many chapters , and the remark's made with regard to the Islington Chapter had been very flattering , for he had heard it said to be considered the premier chapter in London . All the officers would continue to make it so , and he would personally do

his best to keep it up to its present position . I hey had a splendid pattern of excellence in the M . E . Z ., and they could not go wrong in following his footsteps . "The Past Principals" was next given by the M . E . Z ., and with it he coupled that of " The Installing Principal . " There was only one P . Z . present , whom he could say was the best of them all-Comp . Whitaker , I . P . Z . The I . P . Z .

could perform any ceremony in Arch Masonry and give any lecture , including the installation ceremonies , and was always willing to perform any office , even the lowest in the chapter . Comp . W . S . Whitaker , I . P . Z ., in response , said that although he was the only P . Z . present , it by no means followed that they had no Past Principals . He had seen

several P . Z . ' s perform their duties during their year of office very creditably and satisfactorily . He was an exaltee of that chapter , and had performed every office from the lowest to the highest , and since that time he had seen with great satisfaction the successful efforts of those who had followed him . On behalf of the P . Z . ' s he returned sincere thanks , and should occasion arise they would one and all

be happy to do all they could for the chapter . Comps . Rev . Archdeacon Dunbar , F . C . Edmonds , P . Z ., and others , replied for "The Visitors , " expressing their extreme gratification at the very admirable working they had witnessed , and their appreciation of the profuse hospitality accorded them . Other toasts were given , and a successful gathering concluded with the Janitor ' s toast .

Sir Hugh Myddelton Chapter ( No . 1602 ) . —A convocation of this chapter was held at the Cock Tavern , Highbury-corner , on Thursday , the 23 rd ult . The members present included Comps . J . E . McLaren , M . E . Z . ; CDearing , J . s John Weston , P . Z ., Treas . j J . Osborn , P . Z ., S . E .,- J- Bailey , ist A . S .,- T . I . Bird , P . Z .,- W . C . Wigley , P . Z . s VV . Barnes , C . A . Cox , G . R . Uix , W .

Wright , Org . 5 J . Olivers , H . Skinner , 1 . Green , and others . Visitors : Comps . T . C . Edmonds , M . E . Z . 1507 ; H . Cox , P . Z . 742 ,- and VV . W . Lee , 2 nd A . S . 1524 . The chapter having been opened , the minutes were read and confirmed . Bros . J . Chinery , J . White , and H . Skinner , all of No . 1 S 05 , were unanimously approved by ballot , and were exalted into the Royal Arch Degree in

Royal Arch.

excellent style , the lectures being impressively rendered by the M . E . Z ., Comp . T . C Edmonds , P . Z ., acting H ., and Comp . C . Dearing , \ . Comp . C . L . Clark , S 74 , was unanimously elected a joining member . The installations were next proceeded with , and Comps . C . Dearing and J . Bailey duly installed as H . and J . respectively . Comp . K . A . Homan , M . E . Z . elect , was , to the extreme regret of the

companions , unable to attend owing to the lamented death of his wife , which occurred the day previous , and a vote was passed sincerely sympathising with him in his great trouble . The following officers being in attendance were invested : Comps . Weston , P . Z ., Treas . j Osborn , P . Z ., S . E . s Langdale , 2 nd A . S . j and Wright , Org . A Past Principal ' s jewel was presented to Comp . McLaren by Comp . Osborn ,

P . Z ., who referred to the excellent services and admirable working of the M . E . Z ., and said that no jewel had been more richly earned . Comp . McLaren appropriately acknowledged the gift , and expressed his intention of exerting his interest on behalf of the chapter in the future as in the past . The resignation of Comp . Von Holtorp was accepted with regret , and the chapter was closed .

Ample justice having been done to an excellent repast , the usual toasts were honoured . In proposing " The M . E . Z ., " Comp . Weston , P . Z ., said the chapter was nearly a dozen years old , and numbered amongst its Past Principals companions who had done their work to the best of their ability , but however well it had been done in the past , it had never been surpassed by the

manner in which it had been performed by the present occupant of the Z . chair . The working of Comp . McLaren was perfection itself , and it was a great pleasure to those Principals who had passed the chair to see the example they strove to set , not only so well followed , but maintained and enhanced . As brevity was the order of the evening , he would ask the companions at once to drink to the health of

the M . E . Z . with the enthusiasm it so well deserved . Comp . J . McLaren , M . E . Z ., thanked them sincerely for the kind manner in which his health had been proposed and received on this as on former occasions . As the evening was late they would excuse him saying all he felt , but , having thanked them , he must pass on to propose " The Exaltees , " all of whom hailed from the Bromley St . ( Leonard ' s

Lodge . Comp . Green , in reply , said that , as candidates _ that evening , they could not be expected to say much in criticism , for they had been struck with wonder . _ There were few who , having seen the ceremony that evening , could fail to be impressed with its beauty , more particularly those who had taken an interest in biblical history . On behalf of the

exaltees he tendered thanks for the reception accorded them . "The Visitors" was given , and responded to by Comp . W . W . Lee , 1524 , after which " The P . Z . ' s" was given by the M . E . Z ., who referred to the valuable services rendered by each and all of the companions who had passed the chair .

Suitable responses having been made to this and other toasts which followed , the Janitor ' s toast closed the proceedings . During the evening the companions had again the pleasure of hearing the youthful and gifted daughter of the M . E . Z . —Miss McLaren—play several selections on the violin , which she performed with her customary ability , Comp . W . Wright , Organist , presiding at the pianoforte .

Other toasts were given , and a successful gathering concluded with the Janitor ' s toast .

excellent style , the lectures being impressively rendered by the M . E . Z ., Comp .
