The Theatres.
The Theatres .
If we may judge by a crowded , attentive , and fashionable audience , which we saw at the Haymarket Theatre this week , "The Queen of Manoa" is not such a dire failure as it was prophesied by many on its production that it would be . We venture to give a reason for the good houses it is drawing , and that is the personality
of Mrs . Langtry . Some go to see her because of her far-famed beauty , some to see her acting , some to gaze on her magnificent dresses , and some to admire her splendid jewels , said to be worth , £ 30 , 000 . Mr . Haddon Chambers wrote " The Idler , " which was a big success . Mr . Outram Tristram wrote " The Red Lamp , " which was likewise a success . Yet when these two clever
authors collaberatej the result is a very common place play , for " The Queen of Manoa " cannot be said to be anything else , but though a bit gloomy , it is very thrilling , and ivedo not think it will be necessary to replace it quite so soon as was foretold by Mr . E . . Rose ' s play , which Mrs . Langtry has accepted . This celebrated lady
is certainly seen at her best in " The Queen of Manoa . It gives her many opportunities of showing the advance she has made in acting since her visit to America . Mr . Lewis Waller is fervent and passionate to a degree in his love-making scenes . The rest of the company , though numerous and good , call for no special comment .
* Miss Geraldine Ullmar has now taken up the title r 6 le in the light opera " Cigarette . " The piece has been transferred to the Shaftesbury Theatre , where it is doing well , and it ought to have a fairly successful run . The young composer , Mr . Haydyn Parry , a
student of the Guildhall School of Music , and son of the well known organist and composer , Dr . Hubert ; Parry , is much to be commended in his first attempt ' at light opera . There is so much that is p leasing to ; the car in his composition that he will be encouraged . to go on and do still better The story by VVarham ; St . Leger and B . Montrose is simple and interesting . ¦
Mesdames Albu and Amadi are in the cast , and con- tribute a great deal to the opera . We trust Mr . ; Charles Collette ' s " business " has been cut out bodily- ; We found it stupid and wearisome . We hope 1 " Cigarette" will do as well at the Shaftesbury as j it did at the Lyric , from which stage it has had to be ; removed for Mr . Sedger ' s new comic opera . j
• » » Miss Estelle Burney is ambitious of appearing as a :. leading actress , and has had the p luck to take one ot ; the most expensive theatres in London . At the Gar " * \ she has produced a comed y by Mr . Benham , callefl 5 " The Awakening , " which may at once be put down as
the reverse of brilliant . It essays to deal with rnou «' City and West-end life . The tale is a very old one . Husband engrossed in business , 'kind , affectionate , an unsuspicious towards his wile . Wife silly , em P j ' headed thing , lond of flattery , dinners , suppers , ga ' > of all kinds . Thinks husband dull and prosaic ; sn cios
means no vice , but unconsciously runs pretty it by enticing an idle fool to visit her in her husban absence , and is brought to her senses tnr 0 "K ... serious illness of her child . The play affords w Burney opportunity to show that she can act m above the ordinary run of most stage-struck y js ladies . Mr . Herbert Waring , with his subdued styK , ^ excellent as the wronged husband , Mr . Elwooa
heavy as a dragoon . Miss Nina Boucicault (< M 8 ^ of Dion uf that ilk ) is bright , chirpy , and full "' i ^ . and ought to get on . Miss Vane Featherston j 5 ; overacts and never convinces . "The Awa * u » cf well mounted , and possesses a certain p n ) a „' s interest , though it makes the successful ^ usin " | iiy . domestic life appear somewhat loose in its m
