A Holiday Lodge.

The W . M . elect , Bro . Walter Spencer Brymer , vvas installed in a most effective and impressive manner by Bro . Robinson ( who vvas heartily applauded on the delivery of the last charge ) j and the R . W . Bro . the Earl of Radnor being elected to honorary membership , the business portion vvas ended . Not ended quite , by the bye , for the brethren presented their " Hearty good

wishes , which occupied several minutes , there rising for the Grand Lodge—though it is said in some quarters the custom is objected to — viz ., Bro . the Rev . F . W . Macdonald , Grand Chaplain , & c . ; Bro . William E . Brymer , M . P ., Grand Deacon ( Dep . Prov . G . M . Dorset ); and William J . Hughan , Past Grand Deacon , & c . Bro . F . Glover , P . M ., responded for No . 906 Bath ; Bro .

J . P . Capell , W . M ., for No . 1222 Weston-super-Mare ; and Nos . 41 , 53 and 379 were strongly in evidence ; the Craftsmen from Bath , to a great extent , keeping the No . 335 lively , strong , and healthy , notwithstanding it is the most aged lodge in Wilts . The members appeared to be nearly all of the " purple , " and hence , to particularise , is difficult ,

especially after a recherche banquet . However , as several are my personal friends , I recognised the following : From No . 41 , Bath— -Bro . S . G . Mitchell , P . M ., P . Prov . G . D . Wilts ; Bro . C . W . Radway , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Somerset ; Bro . R . B . Cater , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Somerset ; Bro . W . B . Gregory , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Somerset ; and Bro . J . Robinson ,

P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . D . Wilts . From No . ** . ? , Bath : Bro . C . F . Marshall , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Wilts ; Bro . B . H . Watts , P . M ., P . Prov . S . G . W . Wilts ( the efficient Treasurer of No . 335 ) ; Bro . J . A . Timmins , P . M ., P . Prov . G . D . Somerset ; Bro . W . Gill , P . M ., and Bro . B . A . Dyer , P . M ., P . Prov . G . W . Somerset . FromNo . 370 Bath -. Bro . Rev . F . W . MacdonaldJP . M ., P .

Prov . S . G . W . Wilts ; Bro . Rev . C . J . McConnell , P . M ., P . Prov . G . Chap . Somerset , & c . Last , but not least , the energetic and courteous Secretary , Bro . Edward Noke , P . M ., P . Prov . G . D . Wilts , must be noted , who kept us all in order , and by his aid all went off as smoothly and accurately as if " on parade . " Nearly all these brethren are not only members , but actual Past Masters of No . 33 sCorsham .

The lodge being closed , there was a veritable invasion of active hotel officials , vvhich nearly frightened me , as 1 vvas examining the old warrant , and vvas disturbed by a noise as if " bedlam had been let loose . " On enquiry , I found that the lodge room was required for the banquet . Pedestals were pushed aside , chairs tumbled out , and I was almost without a brother to

conduct me out of the hall , for the members had departed as if by magic . I found them , however , with some of the Chaplains wandering over the lovely park of Lord Methuen ' s and going to church—the building , I mean , not a service . Until the welcome rain came on , this was a very pleasant pastime . Al ! the brethren were not there , however , for curious noises vvere heard

from the vicinity as if a lot of schoolboys were having a half hour to themselves , so I thought it well not to be too inquisitive on the first visit , especially as all mustered at the banquet in good time to hear the " grace " offered by our respected brother the Vicar . The old warrant is one of but few known in this country , was granted in the year 1812 , but in the recital ,

the charter is tacked on fictitiously to the extinct lodge at Norwich of 1724 , and bears the signatures of Earl Moira , acting G . M . ; H . R . H . the Duke of Sussex , then D . G . M . ; and Bro . William Henry White , Grand Secretary . A veritable curiosity , but rather the worse for the " wear and tear " of life . The seal is intact , and the document might soon be renovated .

The lodge has not initiated since the year 1828 , so for over 60 years has had " no work to do , ' yet it is vigorous and active to an extraordinary extent , and never more so than now . The senior living and subscribing Past Master is Bro . G . B . Keeling , who was in the chair A . D . 1836 . The next is Bro . Edmund White , vvho was W . M . in 1858 , vvas an initiate of

No . 41 in 1835 , and the Master 1840 . The senior Past Master able to be present was installed in No . 335 as Us ruler some 33 years ago . Though all these dates suggest age and infirmity , none were visible in the lodge . There were certainly elderly juveniles present , but the oldest would not give into that ever blooming and vivacious brother , " Charlie Radway , " for health

and spirits . Altogether the meeting was so enjoyable and remarkable withal , that I wish much we had just such another in my Provinces of Devon and Cornwall . " No work to do , " and plenty to assist most ardently in such arduous labour , the hours flew away like minutes , and when the Tyler ' s toast was called for , the gathering seemed but began . Many were loath to

leave , and formed chatty little companies at wee tables with tempting coffee to suit the most fastidious tastes . Others sojourned to take part in the traditional game of the lodge , and eventually d ispersed to their homes , far and near , to await the next happy meeting , all being well , in May , 1894 . Only two are held annually , but they are meetings . W . J . H .

MEMORIAL TO THE LATE BRO . THE REV . WM . COLLINGS LUKIS .

On Sunday evening , the 25 th ult ., in the presence of a large congregation , ths memorial window , which had been erected in the south wall of the chancel , was

unveiled by Lady Graham , of Norton Conyers . The Rev . Francis . Earle , Rector of West Tanfield , afterwards preached a most appropriate sermon . He took for his text Hebrews xiii ., 7 and 8 verses— " Remember them which have the rule over you , who have spoken unto you the word of God , whose faith follow , considering

the end of their conversation . Jesus Christ the same yesterday , and to-day , and for ever . " The window consists of two lights ; in that to the spectator ' s left the Saviour , with a halo around his head , is represented as the sower scattering the seed from a basket , whilst the birds of the air are fl ying around . The flowers of the field—the poppy , foxglove , and

thistle- —are clearly shown , and the sun is seen shining in all his glory . In the light to the spectator ' s right an angel is seen , " putting in the sickle" to the standing corn , and another angel standing behind with a sickle in his ri ght hand , bearing a sheaf of corn on his left arm . In the small li ght at the top of the window an angel is represented playing upon a harp . The

colouring of the whole is very rich , and harmonises well with the surroundings . ' -The work was executed by Hemming of Westminster . A brass plate at the side of the window bears the following inscription : " To the glory of God and in memory of the Rev . William Collings Lukis , M . A ., F . S . A . Born April Sth ,

1817 . Died December 7 th , 1892 . For nearly 31 years Rector ofthe Parish of Wath . This window is inserted by his Parishioners , Friends , and Mark Master Masons of West Yorkshire . " Bro . Lukis was some time Dep . Prov . Grand Master of Mark Master Masons of West Yorkshire .
