ST . DUNSTAN'S CHAPTER ( No . 15 S 9 ) . — The installation meeting of this new but flourishing chapter was held on Wednesday , tbe 28 th ult ., at Anderton ' s Hotel . There were present Comps . VV . Wellsman , M . E . Z . ; H . Dalwood , H . ; Dodson , J . ; Colonel Ratcliffe ( honorary member ) , acting I . P . Z . ; A . Tislcy , S . E . ; T . C . Walls , P . G . D . C . Middlesex , P . S . ; VV . Lake , P . P . G . R . Cornwall , 1 st Assistant ; G . Manners 2 nd Assistant ;

, and Gilbert , Janitor . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot vvas taken upon behalf of Bro . R . Skclton , 15 S 9 , for exaltation , and it proved to be unanimous , but he was unavoidably prevented from attending . The installation of the three " Principals , Comps . Dalwood , Dodson , and Walls , was most ably and impressively carried out by Comp . Colonel RatclifTc , and subsequently a

vote of thanks was unanimously passed to him for his services . The appointments and investments for the ensuing year were as follows : Comps . Wellsman , I . P . Z . ; Praed , Treasurer ; Tisley , S . E . ; Lake , S . N . ; Turner , P . S . ; Manners , istAssistant ; Bristoe . 2 nd Assistant ; and Farrington , jun ., Organist . The report of thc Committee appointed to audit the accounts having been received and adopted , the convocation was closedand the companions

, and their visitors adjourned to a well-served banquet The visitors were Comps . Stiles , j . 1509 ; Wellard , P . S . 1319 ; and Captain Cole , 1507 . At the close of the banquet the customary Royal Arch toasts were duly proposed and lovallv honoured , " in proposing "The Health of the M . E . Z ., " the I . P . Z . said that he was forcibl y reminded that evening of the old French proverb , "The king is dead , long live the king , " because

that proverb was as ( rue in Masonry as in every other community where the chief died ami was succeeded bv another . By the force of circumstances he ( the I . P . Z . ) vacated the chair , and that removal enabled a very worthy companion to immediately succeed him . In the person of their M . E . Z . they had a companion who was conversant with thc work , and who was thoroughly able to preside over them , and he ( the speaker ) believed that he would

have a most brilliant year of office . In concluding his remarks he hoped that" at the termination of his tenure of office the M . E . Z . would look back with as much genuine pleasure to his occupancy of the chair as had been afforded the companions that evening in witnessing his induction to it . In reply , the M . E . Z . said , that he was quite overpowered by the eloquent remarks of Comp . Wellsman in proposing his health . Throughout his long Masonic career

he had endeavoured to do all he could to further the great principles upon which it was founded , because lie was one of those who believed that Freemasonry was an institution that should not be treated lightly , but should be regarded seriously and carried out thoroughly . Although he had been connected with Roval Arch Masonrv some time , it was only lately that be had taken an active part in the working of its ceremony , butnotwithstanding thatlie

, , hoped to be able to discharge his duties in a manner that should give satisfaction . In proposing "The Health of the I . P . Z ., " thc M . E . Z . dwelt upon the brilliant services rendered by Comp . Wellsman ( luring his tenure of the chair in the St . Dunstan's Lodge . In thc chapter he had not had the same opportunity of distinguishing himself , but what he had done lie had performed ' well . In the

discharge of his duties he had evinced the greatest kindness and courtesy , and it afforded him , the M . E . Z ., the greatest possible amount of pleasure to be in the position to present him with the very handsome jewel which had been voluntaril y voted by thc chapter to mark its great appreciation of his services . In concluding his remarks he hoped that in the years to come Comp . Wellsman would look with pride upon that interesting souvenir of his connection with

the St . Dunstan ' s Chapter . This pledge having been received with excellent "tire , " the LP . / ,., in response , said that be had accepted the position of First Principal with a great deal of diffidence , as he knew but little of its duties . He took no credit to himself for the great success that had attended the chapter ; he had done all he could for it , and with his best energies , but he had been greatly assisted by Comps . Dalwood , Dodson , Tislev , and others .

Respecting the brilliant jewel which had been so kindly given to him , lie should ever regard it with pride , as it marked one of the most pleasant reminiscences of his Masonic life . "The Installing Officers" followed . In proposing this pledge the M . E . Z . took occasion to speak of the valuable services rendered to the chapter from its consecration by Comp . Col . Ratcliffe . 1 le said that that worthy companion , moreover , had charmed them all by his

courtesy and urbanity , and he firml y believed ( hat his name would be held by them in the most grateful romem-1 mice for many years to come . In conclusion he trusted that Comp . Colonel Ratcliff would continue regularly t cone among them , in order that they might have thc benefit of his excellent advice and assistance . This toast having been heartily received , the Installing Officer , in reply , said he could scarcely believe that twelve months had

elapsed since he bad had the pleasure of attending the consecration—the march of time had been so rapid . On that occasion he bad predicted a grand future for the chapter , but he had no conception that his augury wculd have been fulfilled so speedily . The chapter now numbered twenty-seven members , and there were others down for exaltation at the next conclave , and under these p'ratifying circumstances the St Dunstan ' s Chapter could be

pronounced a thorough and complete success . He then went on to speak of the ritual , which , although difficult , he said could be mastered by constant and zealous application . In conclusion he expressed his thanks for the more than hearty way in which his health had been proposed and received . "The Second and Third Principals " and " The Visitors" followed . 'I'he latter toast was acknowledged by

Comps . Stiles , Col < -, and Wellard . The pledge of "The Officers " received full justice at the hands of Comps . Tisley , Lake , Turner , and Farrington , jun . The amusement of the companions was i-nli ' inn d by the instrumental and vocal contributions of Comps , Farrington , Tislev , Cole , Stiles , Bcdingfield , and others . 'I'he Janitor ' s toast at a late hour terminated the proceedings .

This was accordingly dune , and Bro . Humphries , of the Eboracum Lodge , was introduced , and duly exalted : the Historical Lecture being delivered by E . Comp . J . S . Cumberland , II .

After the ceremony E . Comp . T . B . VVliytebead again assumed the chair , and the report of the Bye-laws Committee was brought up and adopted , after which the chapter vvas closed , aiid the companions adjourned to supper , provided by Comp . " The Grand Officers" was responded toby Bros . Dewar and Levander , tbe first named also subsequently acknowledged tbe toast of " Thc Provintial Grand Officers . " " Thc Health of the W . M . " was proposed in exceedingly complimentary terms

by Bro . Levander . I he W . M . having replied gave " Thc Visitors , " in which he expressed the great pleasure it had afforded himself personally , and the members of the lodge , in welcoming among them that day their esteemed and distinguished Bro . Lieut .-Col . Shadwell II . Clerke , and Bro . Duke , from the Province of Sussex . This toast having been heartily received , Bro . Lieut .-Col . Shadwell H . Clerke

briefly responded . In the course of his reply he expressed his thanks for the warmness of thc reception accorded to him and his co-visitor by the members of the Leopold Mark Lodge . It had given him much gratification in being present on so auspicious an occasion as the installation of the W . M . He was pleased to hear that since its advent the lodge had made such satisfactory progress . In conclusion

he said that the lodge had his best wishes for a continuance of its success . Bro . Duke having expressed himself in similar terms , "The Health of the Installing Officers " followed , and was tersely acknowledged by Bros . Dewar and Levander . In giving "The Oifficers , " tbe W . M . alluded to the absence through illness of VV . Bro . Wigginlon , I . P . M . and Secretary , which circumstance was greatly to be regretted as he should have liked to have presented

him on that occasion with the very handsome Past Master ' s jewel which had been unanimously voted to him by the . lodge . Having spoken of the services of the other officers , he concluded by congratulating the Leopold Lodge upon possessing so strong and efficient a staff of officials .
