Metropolitan And City Police Orphanage.

METROPOLITAN AND CITY POLICE ORPHANAGE .

One of the most useful and best managed institutions in thc metropolis has just issued its annual report , and as it deserves , in our opinion , both notice and commendation by tbe press , we find for it a corner in our crowded columns . No more needed or valuable " charity" in its truest

meaning can exist , per se , and all of us who require so constantly the aid , and note the efficiency and civility of our police force , can enter into the advantages of such an institution for that hardly-worked body of men , whose ' wear and tear " is greatly above the average , and when , owing to illness , rough usage , and the unforseen accidents and calamities of lifesuch a home and refuge is an incalculable

, blessin" and salvation ( humanly speaking ) to many a poor , friendless , helpless orphan . We have an old familiar proverb " the proof of the pudding is in the eating , and it we may judge of the appreciation of both the public and the force of the orphanage , it is happily arid truly very great . For instance , the donations and subscriptions ot trip " oublic" during 1 S 70 amounted to £ . 3579 MS . nd-,

which is a very striking fact , when wc remember that in 1 S 70 the number of donors and subscribers was G 03 , and in lS 70 A . \ 2 T The most salient view connected with this report , and the most interesting in itself , is the most creditable fact that the institution is mainly kept up by the zealous support and subscriptions of tbe police force itself , both Metropolitan and of the City . . , Out of the two bodies , 5 S 3 inspectors , 997 sergeants , and

9 S 03 constables annually subscribe , and only one inspector , 12 sergeants , and 77 constables do not do so . But the support ol the force does notstop with an annual subscription . By entertainments and excursions of various kinds , organized by the force , it seems a further sum of £ 3 ^ 2 19 s . 1 id ., making altogether , in one way or another , the large amount of £ 6325 iSs . id ., is contributed by and through Police include in this

the Metropolitan and City . Wc amount the creditable item of £ 43 13 id . from retired constables , and £ 94 9 s . lod . collected in boxes at the police stations . We note here , before passing on , that the annual fete at the Crystal Palace produced / , 130 s iqd . Od . ; that at the Alexandra Palace £ 810 Ss . id ., while the concert of the A , B , and C Divisions brought £ 289 is . 7 d .,

and the ball of the City Police £ 240 is . 71 b Here then is the key , wc venture to think , to the success which has marked the progress of this most useful institution . Its whole income has been £ 13 , 598 7 s . Sd „ ( including saleof £ 2000 Stock , ) its expenditure £ 11 , 560 17 s- Sd ., leaving a balance of £ 2037 10 s . We may observe that it has paid £ 3000 for a piece of land adjoining the orphanage ,

which is now fenced in . There are now 233 children in the asylum , of whom 140 are boys , and 93 girls . The report of their status scholastically is also very good , and proves that the work of tuition is efficiently and carefully performed , being good al

round work , and thorough in its character and outcome . We need say no more to commend so valuable and practical an institution to the notice of our readers and the Craft , as many might be willing to send a contribution to help forward so good a work , and to support so unpretending , yet much-needed and well-ordered an orphanage .
