Obituary .

BRO . JAMES W . GEORGE , P . M . & SEC . 1309 , P . P . G . O . MIDDX . It is vvith very great regret vve record the death of Bro . James William George , vvhich took place very suddenly at his residence , 12 , St . Hugh ' s-road , Anerley , on Wednesday , December 22 . He died from heart disease . The deceased vvas initiated into Freemasonry at the Acacia Lodge , No . 1309 , on Sth March , 1 S 73 . Unless too ill to

attend , he never missed a meeting of the lodge . He served through the various offices , and was in due time installed W . M ., subsequently retaining a prominent position in the lodge . On Bro . C . J . Rushworth , P . P . G . R . Middx ., P . M ., Treasurer , relinquishing the office of Secretary , Bro . George was made Secretary , vvhich position he held till his death . He also succeeded Bro . F . Walters as

installing officer on his retirement from that position through ill-health . He refused to accept the usual Past Master ' s Fund , vvhich had been unanimously voted to him , and the amount was by his request paid into the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution instead . He vvas a fine musician , and used to treat the members , when exercising his talents ,

to some exquisite selections of music , so that it is not surprising he should have been appointed P . G . Org . Middx . He was very much beloved by every member of the Acacia Lodge , and all to whom he was known in Masonry . He vvas interred at Elmer ' s End Cemetery on Wednesday , the 29 th ult ., at 3 p . m .

BRO . S . CORSON . Bro . Stephen Corson died suddenly on the 21 st ult ., at Ostend . He vvas initiated in the Acacia Lodge , No . 1309 , in 1 S 70 , and subscribed until June , 1871 , when he became a joining member of the Lebanon , No . 1326 , and continued such until his death . Being a marine engineer , he was unable to take office in any lodge , but both he and his

wife were annual subscribers to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . At the time of his death he held the important post of chief engineer , s . s . " Rhine , " General Steam Navigation Company . He was well knovvn amongst marine engineers and the engineering world , having in his time held important positions at John Penn & Sons ' , Greenwich , Woolwich Steam Packet Company , and other firms , and , lastly , with the G . S . N . Co .

BRO . C . VV . SMYTH , P . M . 1524 . We regret lo record the decease of this brother , who vvas well-known in the North-East of London as the genial host of the Sisters Tavern , Povvnall-road , Dalston , the place of meeting of the Dalhousie Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Smyth vvas initiated in the Duke of Connaught Lodge

in December , 1875 , was a P . M ., and also served as Treasurer . He was a Life Governor of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and also of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , having served as Steward to both these Institutions . He died on the 28 th ult ., after a brief illness of three days , and was interred at Highgate on the 4 th instant .

THE LATE BRO . EDWIN GILBERT , P . G . P . MIDDLESEX . The funeral of the late Bro . Edwin Gilbert , of the Windsor Castle Hotel , King-street-west , Hammersmith , took place at Brompton Cemetery , on Friday , the r / th ult . The inhabitants of the immediate neighbourhood , and all along King-street showed their respect for the memory

of the deceased by partly closing their establishments . The cortege consisted of an open car , in vvhich vvas laid the coffin of polished oak , covered with between 40 and 50 floral wreaths , noticeable among which vvas a splendid one sent by the Hammersmith Lodge , No . 2090 ; and a wn ath of acacia contributed by the Lebanon Lodge , No . 1320 . Wreaths were also sent by the Chiswick Lodge of

Instruction , No . 2012 ; West London Angling Club , the employes of the London General Omnibus Company , Bros . VV . R , Vassila , P . G . Std . Br . Middx ., W . M . 1326 ; S . Page , Treas . 1326 ; F . Walters , P . M ., P . P . G . D . Middx ., Sec . 132 O ; J . Symes , P . M . S 34 ; and many others . There were also three mourning coaches , and some twenty private carnages . The first coach containing Mrs . Gilbert ,

( widow of the deceased ) , Mr . E . Gilbert , Mr . C . Gilbert ( sons ) , and the three Misses Gilberts ( daughters ) . The cemetery vvas reached about half-past twelve o'clock , and was there received bv the Rev . W . G . Martin , chaplain of the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum , who conducted the service both in the chapel and at the grave side . Amongst the gentlemen who attended in private carriages and on

foot were Mr . Walter Venner , Chairman of the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum ; Mr . G . Smith , past Trustee ; Mr . L . Annett , Secretary of that Institution ; M . VV . H . Beauchamp , past Governor of the Licensed Victuallers' School ; Mr . Robertson , present , and Mr . VV . Cambden and Mr . G . S . Ayres , past Trustees ; and Mr . Milles and Mr . Willis , Past Committeemen of that Society ; and many others .

VVe are pleased to learn that Bro . L . Allport has succeeded to the businesses for over a hundred years successfully conducted by Messrs . Chas . H . Job & Co ., and Job Bros . & Co ., as wholesale and retail stationers , and vvill continue it under the name of Chas . H . Job & Co ., at 149 , Queen Victoria-street , E . C . PARIS HIPPODROME AT OLYMPIA . —Representations having reached the management of Olympia that it

would be a convenience if visitors could lunch or dine there before the Hippodrome performances , arrangements have been made for a private door , on the South side , to be opened at 15 . 30 and 6 o'clock , at which tickets for boxes , stalls , and grand circle may be purchased . These tickets will admit visitors to Messrs . Bertram and Co . 's , dining and grill

rooms , from vvhich they will pass to their reserved seats with ptifect comfort and entirely avoiding the crowd . Another innovation is the supplying of afternoon tea on the first promenade , where ladies sip their tea , and gentlest en ] ° y theircigarettes while witnessing the performances . t he first promenade is fast becoming a fashionable afternoon rendezvous .

MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their next monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday next , the 12 th inst ., at the usual hour . The names of the petitioners who may be accepted will be placed on the lists for the May election .

lhe Quarterly General Court of tha Royal Masonic Institution for Girls will be held at Freemasons ' Hall , to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at the hour of noon . The Boys' School Quarterly will be held on Monday , the ioth inst ., at the same place . The business to be dealt with in each case vvill be found described in our advertisement columns .

It will be news to most of our readers to learn , on the authority of the Hanley Echo , that " Freemasonry was interdicted in England in 1717 . Bro . Hanington was to be installed W . M . of the Loyal Berkshire Lodge of Hope , No . 574 , Newbury , among the brethren invited to be present on the occasion being Bros . Mount , M . P ., and Murdoch , M . P .

Her Majesty has been graciously pleased to send for half a dozen copies of " From Morn till Eve , " a most charming little every-day text-book , with 3 8 different illuminated designs and texts , with verses by Miss Havergal . It is announced that the Earl of Zetland has been appointed Prov . G . Supt . of R . A . Masons for N . and E . Yorkshire , in succession to the late Comp . J . Pearson Bell , M . D ., who has held the office for many years .

" The Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar , Diary , and I'oiket Book ''—an indispensable handbook for all who take an interest in Freemasonry—is published for the 17 th year by Mr . George Kenning . —Daily Chronicle . Bro . Stribley was recently installed W . M . of the St . Petroc Lodge , No . 1785 , Padstow , a full choral service being for the first time introduced on the occasion . The banquet was held at the St . Petroc Private Hotel .

The Selwyn Lodge , No . 1901 , will hold its second annual ball in aid of the Masonic Charities , on Thursday , February ioth , in the Peckham Public Hall . A concert vvill also be provided which the Committee consider vvill prove an additional attraction .

THE GOLD AND SILVER WYRE DRAWERS ' COMPANY . —A meeting of this company will be held on Monday next for the purpose of electing master and wardens for the ensuing year . Bro . N . Abel , senior warden , has been put in nomination for the office of master in succession to Bro . Major Joseph , C . C .

Bro . Alderman H . G . Martin , of St .. Albans , a P . M . of the Watford and Brighton Lodges , has died recently . The deceased entered the Town Council in 1 S 67 , and vvas appointed Alderman and subsequently Mayor in 1 S 69 . He was very highly respected , and will be greatly . nissed by the town and the Masonic community .

The Croydon Guardian is silly enough to ask "the Masonic body" to explain how the Secretary of one its lodges could have been found starved to death on Plumstead Common ? Will this journal point out how the " Masonic body " is to know the whereabouts of all its members , especially when , as in the case of this unfortunate Secretary , they studiously hold themselves aloof from their family and friends ?

Bro . Major John Crombie , P . M . of St . Machar Lodge , No . 319 , and Past Grand Warden of Scotland , vvas presented by the members of his lodge with a handsome epergne , on Wednesday , the 29 th ult ., in recognition of his services to the Craft generally , and especially to St . Machar Lodge . The presentation vvas made by Bro . the Rev . C C . Macdonald , and generously acknowledged by Bro . Major Crombie .

S ., conductor of the "Gardeners' Magazine" ) contains as a special feature , a complete list of show auriculas , corrected to the present time , giving names , raisers , characters , dates , and colours . The lists of plants figured ; descriptions of all new plants , flowers , and fruits

of the best of everything in aid of purchasers , and notes on new inventions , SEC , are also given . The commercial and astionomical information renders it a valuable almanack for the desk and the library table . This new issue is the 29 th in the continuous series of the "Garden Oracle . The Palladian Lodge , No . 120 , held their first meeting of the new year , on Tuesday evening , the 4 th inst ., atthe Palladian Lodge Rooms , Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , under the presidency of the newly-installed W . M ., Bro . Blinkhorn . After the confirmation of the minutes of the previous lodge and of St . John's Day , there

were several advancements of new members , and a ballot for another candidate from Kington , where there is no lodge . Bro . Alfred Henry Matthews , solicitor , M . M ., Vitruvian Lodge , No . 338 , Ross , proposed by the I . P . M ., and seconded by Bro . Elijah Shaw , P . M ., was received through the ballot as a joining member of this lodge .

Bro . Sir Francis Bolton died on Wednesday at the Royal Bath Hotel , Bournemouth , where he and Lady Bolton had been staying for the last two months . The deceased vvas born in 1831 , and entering the army in 1857 , was staff officer on the Gold Coast from 1 S 5 S to 1 S 60 . He became captain of the 12 th Foot in 1861 , major ( unattached ) for special military scientific services in 1 S 6 S , lieut .-colonel in 1 S 77 , and retired colonel in 18 S 1 . He was the inventor

of the system of telegraphy and visual signalling introduced into Her Majesty ' s service in 1863 . Since 1871 he had been the water examiner under the Board of Trade ; and was the founder , vice-president , and hon . secretary of the Society of Electricians . Bro . Sir Francis Bolton vvill be best recollected by the general public in connection vvith the Health , Inventions , and Colonial and Indian Exhibitions , in all of vvhich he played an important part .

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their next monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday next , the 12 th inst ., at the usual hour . The names of the petitioners who may be accepted will be placed on the lists for the May election .

lhe Quarterly General Court of tha Royal Masonic Institution for Girls will be held at Freemasons ' Hall , to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at the hour of noon . The Boys' School Quarterly will be held on Monday , the ioth inst ., at the same place . The business to be dealt with in each case vvill be found described in our advertisement columns .

It will be news to most of our readers to learn , on the authority of the Hanley Echo , that " Freemasonry was interdicted in England in 1717 . Bro . Hanington was to be installed W . M . of the Loyal Berkshire Lodge of Hope , No . 574 , Newbury , among the brethren invited to be present on the occasion being Bros . Mount , M . P ., and Murdoch , M . P .

It is announced that the Earl of Zetland has been appointed Prov . G . Supt . of R . A . Masons for N . and E . Yorkshire , in succession to the late Comp . J . Pearson Bell , M . George Kenning . —Daily Chronicle . Bro . Stribley was recently installed W . M . of the St . Petroc Lodge , No . 1785 , Padstow , a full choral service being for the first time introduced on the occasion . The banquet was held at the St . Petroc Private Hotel .

The Selwyn Lodge , No . 1901 , will hold its second annual ball in aid of the Masonic Charities , on Thursday , February ioth , in the Peckham Public Hall . A concert vvill also be provided which the Committee consider vvill prove an additional attraction .

THE GOLD AND SILVER WYRE DRAWERS ' COMPANY . —A meeting of this company will be held on Monday next for the purpose of electing master and wardens for the ensuing year . Bro . N . Abel , senior warden , has been put in nomination for the office of master in succession to Bro . Major Joseph , C . C .

Bro . Alderman H . G . Martin , of St .. Albans , a P . M . of the Watford and Brighton Lodges , has died recently . The deceased entered the Town Council in 1 S 67 , and vvas appointed Alderman and subsequently Mayor in 1 S 69 . He was very highly respected , and will be greatly . nissed by the town and the Masonic community .

The Croydon Guardian is silly enough to ask "the Masonic body" to explain how the Secretary of one its lodges could have been found starved to death on Plumstead Common ? Will this journal point out how the " Masonic body " is to know the whereabouts of all its members , especially when , as in the case of this unfortunate Secretary , they studiously hold themselves aloof from their family and friends ?

The Palladian Lodge , No . 120 , held their first meeting of the new year , on Tuesday evening , the 4 th inst ., atthe Palladian Lodge Rooms , Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , under the presidency of the newly-installed W . M ., Bro . Blinkhorn . After the confirmation of the minutes of the previous lodge and of St . John's Day , there

were several advancements of new members , and a ballot for another candidate from Kington , where there is no lodge . Bro . Alfred Henry Matthews , solicitor , M . M ., Vitruvian Lodge , No . 338 , Ross , proposed by the I . P . M ., and seconded by Bro . Elijah Shaw , P . M ., was received through the ballot as a joining member of this lodge .

Bro . Sir Francis Bolton died on Wednesday at the Royal Bath Hotel , Bournemouth , where he and Lady Bolton had been staying for the last two months . The deceased vvas born in 1831 , and entering the army in 1857 , was staff officer on the Gold Coast from 1 S 5 S to 1 S 60 . He became captain of the 12 th Foot in 1861 , major ( unattached ) for special military scientific services in 1 S 6 S , lieut .-colonel in 1 S 77 , and retired colonel in 18 S 1 . He was the inventor

of the system of telegraphy and visual signalling introduced into Her Majesty ' s service in 1863 . Since 1871 he had been the water examiner under the Board of Trade ; and was the founder , vice-president , and hon . secretary of the Society of Electricians . Bro . Sir Francis Bolton vvill be best recollected by the general public in connection vvith the Health , Inventions , and Colonial and Indian Exhibitions , in all of vvhich he played an important part .
