The Worshipful Masters of the various lodges presented their reports , all of which were of an t miner tly satisfactory character , after which the reports of the various Committees were presented and adopted . In reference to the report of the Charity Committee , which staled that neaily £ 600 had been raised by the province for the various Masonic Institutions , Bro .
A . W OODIWISS , P . P . S . G . W ., proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman of the Committee , Bro . Percy Wallis , P . P . S . G . W ., for the zeal and ene'gy he had displayed on b : half of the work for which the Committee wa * responsible . Bro . Wallis had spared neither time nor money in ths matter , and in him they possessed a Chairman whose services they could ill afford to lose .
Bro . W . H . MARSDEN , P . P . S . G . W ., seconded the motion in equally complimentary terms , and , it having been heartily carried , Bro . WALLIS suitably responded . A notice of motion by Bro . WALLIS for the granting of 20 guine . is out of the funds of the Prov . Grand Lodge for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution having been favourably dealt with , the election of P . G . Treasurer was proceeded with .
There were two candidates for the office , namely , Bro . W . Cooper , P . M . 731 , proposed by Bro . W . H . MARSDEN , P . P . S . G . W ., P . G . S . B . England seconded by Bro . PERCY WALLIS , P . P . S . G . W . ; and Bro . Richard Thornley , P . M . 654 , proposed by Bro . H . BARBER , P . P . J . G . D ., and seconded by Bro J . WHITEHEAD , P . P . G . D . C .
It was stated by Bro . Thornley s supporters that they had no personal objection to Bro . Cooper , whose qualification for the office they quite admitted , but they acted on principle , and by way of protest to such a high office as that of P . G . Treasurer being always held by a member of one of the Derby lodges .
On a vote being taken , Bro . Cooper was elected by a majority of nearly three to one . . The Masonic Hall Committee of Management and the Charity Committee were re-appointed .
The following resolution was , on the motion of Bro . W . H . MARSDEN , seconded by Bro . THOMAS COX , P . P . S . G . W ., adopted : " That the election of Treasurer shall take place by ballot at the annual meeting of P . G . Lodge . No brother shall be eligible for election to the office unless he has been nominated in writing by two members of the P . G . Lodge . Such nomination

He directed their attention to the interes'ing speech delivered to them by their P . G . M ., the Duke of Devonshire , last year . It would be
remembered that the Djke , whilst rejoicing to see the remarkable development of Freemasonry in the provinces , took occasion to advise them strongly not to regard the accession cf numbers so hi ghly as the duty to seeing that no brother was admitted to the Craft unless there was abandant reason for believing that he would ultimately reflect hoiouron the choice . He desired to echo those wise words . Nothing had struck him mo-e that day than the
evidence of harmony which appeared to exist , and he was glad also to see that the cause of the Charhies had been so heartily supported . In that connection he referred to the signal service which Bro . Percy Wallis had rendered , and the vote of thanks which the brethren had accorded him was never more heartily deserved . He wished Bro . Wallis health and strength to pursue his noble work . The Acting P . G . M ., in conclusion , mentioned that the Duke of Devonshire would pr < side over the next annual Festival of
the Masonic Institution for Boys , and he himself had been asked and consented to accept a Stewardship . As the Institution was on the eve of its centenary , he commended it to the favourable consideration of every Mason . Bro . PERCY WALLIS gave notice that he would move ihat the sum of 35 guineas be placed on Bro . Okeover ' s list as Steward for the province at the ensuing Festival of the 'R . M . I . B . The annual banquet was subsequently held at the Royal Hotel , the customary Masonic toast list buing gone through .
