Sec , read his annual report , in the course
of which he said that though the past year had not been conspicuous for any increase in the number of lodges , yet the roll of membership had very considerable additions . The number of candidates during the year was 709 , and there were now 6806 brethren on the roll of members' compared with a total of 6561 the previous year . It might be worth while to enquire how it was that while the number of initiates was over 700 , the increase in
the number on the rolls was less than 250 . The reason of this was that in several lodges a large number of brethren in arrears had been struck off the rolls . For instance , one lodge had initiated 80 candidates , and the members now numbered 18 less than in the previous year . It was to be regretted also that the lodges who had the largest number of initiates were not always the largest contributors to the funds of benevolence . As a fixed rule , the net amount received for initiation fees . should be devoted to benevolent
purposes , and if current expenses could not be met by other means , either the subscriptions should be increased or the expenditure decreased . He earnestly recommended this subject to the attention of those who had at heart the best interests of the Craft . He congratulated the province on the
glorious result of their efforts for the Boys' School , the sum of ^ 6000 subscribed by them never having been previously reached by this or any other province . On behalf of the brethren he congratulated the Provincial Grand Master on his appointment as Pro Grand Master of England , in succession to the late Earl of Carnarvon .
Bro . the Earl of LATHOJI , replying , said he considered it a very good thing that only one Iodge had been consecrated during the year , for in his opinion there had been too rapid an increase . There were plenty of lodges if they were but well supported and kept up . He cordially endorsed everything Bro . Goodacre had said about the initiation fees . He also , he might say , thought that much greater care should be taken in the selection of
candidates , for brethren who were admitted into the Fraternity should be brethren capable and willing to help the Masonic Charities , and not brethren who would soon go upon the benevolent fund themselves . Although he thought that the initiation fees should all be devoted to charitable purposes , yet he by no means complained of the brethren of that province , for they had indeed shown how thoroughly they were imbued with the true spirit of Charity . He now took the opportunity of thanking them for the support the whole of the
brethren of West Lancashire gave him the other day vvhen he took the chair at the Boys' Institution meeting . In conclusion , he might say that he should endeavour to perform his duties asthoroughly and as Masonically as possible ; he would follow in the steps of the late Earl of Carnarvon , who was a good man and a good Mason . INSTALLATION OF THE EARL OF RADNOR AS PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER OF WILTSHIRE .
The Earl of Radnor was on Saturday , the 31 st ult ., installed as Prov . Grand Master of Wiltshire . The ceremony took place at the Council Chamber , Salisbury , which had been kindly lent for the occasion by his Worshi p the Mayor , and was performed by his Royal Hi ghness the Duke of Connaught , K . G ., M . W . P . G . M ., P . G . M . Sussex , and R . VV . Dist . G . M . of Bombay . His Royal Highness was met at the station by the Mayor and by the Earl of Radnor and Viscount Folkestone , who then drove with him to the Council Chamber .
The Provincial Grand Lodge was opened by Bro . Sir Gabriel Goldney , D . P . G . M ., who was assisted by the Prov . Grand Officers . After the Provincial Grand Lodge had been opened , the roll of the provincial lodges was read over by Bro . HARRY BEVIR , Prov . G . Secretary , and
