GRAND MASTER , addressing the large assembly , said that none cf them could have heard the roll of lodges called without feeling that 't was exceedingly satisfactory . He expressed his thanks to the lodges under whose banners they had met that day , and also to the Mayor of
Provincial Grand Lodge Of Durham.
Gateshead , who had personally met those who had in hand the making of the necessary arrangements for their gathering . In calling attention to th ; losses the Craft had sustained during the year by death , he particularly mentioned his old friends , Lord I . athom , Lord Herschell , and Bro . Scarth , agent at Raby . Masonry had been going on satisfactorily , not by leaps and bounds , but by steady increase . The year 1 S 98 closed with
3023 members in the province , which gave an average of 85 per lodge . There had been an increase during the year of 453 " members , from which they had to take a loss of 325 brethren b y death and other causes , leaving anett increase for the year of 128 . He then proceeded to give a review of Masonry in the Durham Province since he became G . Master in 1 SS 5 , when there were 3 i lodges with a total membershipof 2258 . The
membership now showed an increase of 33 per cent ., while the lodge dues had increased from £ 254 in 18 S 5 to £ 411 during the past year . He also alluded to the very satisfactory Festival which had been held at Durham in the spring of this year , which had resulted so advantageousl y to the Hudson Benevolent Fund and the Durham Masonic Education Fund , and went on to refer to the gratifying conduct of their Prov . G . Secretary ( Bro . R .
Hudson ) , for whom they had raised a testimonial , but who was content to receive a slight recognition of his services , and devoted the whole of the proceeds , amounting to nearly 2000 guineas , to the formation of the Hudson Benevolent Fund and the placing of the Durham Masonic Education Fund UDOn a Dermanent foundation with a trust fund of Sinnn n nuA onnl , „ >
The Prov . G . Lodge was afterwards closed in due form . Subsequently the brethren partook of luncheon in the Assembly Roim , the purveyors being Messrs . Swinburne and Co ., of the Royal Hotel , Bro . Charles Twibell , manager , superintending . The loyal and Masonic toasts were afterwards honoured .

After the opening of the lodge , The CONSECRATING OFFICER addressed the brethren , and said they had met on a very interesting occasion—for the purpose of starting into existence a new lodge . That lodge would bear the name of St . Olave ' s Lodge , the founders of which , he believed , were intimatelv connerrrpd vuiih ih »
parish in which they had met , and many had been associated together in a very well-known school in the neighbourhood . He was expressing the feelings of all present when he uttered the hope that the lodge would have a career of great usefulness , that it would accomplish all those special objects the founders had in view , and be the means of advancing the best interests of Masonry in that part of the metropolis .
The warrant was read by the G . D . C , and the founders signified their approval of the officers named therein . Bro . Rev . Canon BROWNRIGG then delivered an oration , and the new lodge was afterwards solemnly constituted and dedicated . Bro . J . O'Dea , P . M ., having been installed as the first W . M ., invested
the following officers : Bros . H . V . Lloyd , P . M ., P . G . S . B . Bucks , actine I . P . M . ; H . W . Bulpitt , S . W . ; J . Norden , J . W . ; T . Woodbury , Treas . ; Rev . W . The Consecrating Officers were unanimously elected honorary members on the proposition of the SECRETARY , and were presented each of them with a founder ' s jewel as a souvenir of the occasion .
I hese compliments were appropriately acknowledged by Bros . E . LETCHWORTH , G . Sec , and G . EVERETT , P . G . Treas . A Committee was elected to frame by-laws , several candidates were proposed for initiation and one for joining , and the lodge was closed . A banquet followed , and the usual toasts were subsequentl y honoured . " The ( Jueen and the Craft" and " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales " were first heartily given .
The W . M . then proposed " The Grand Officers , " and referred to the work done by that body . The duties of the Grand Master were so multifarious , that it devolved upon other Grand Officers to preside in Grand Lodge , and conduct the affairs of the Craft . Every detail went through the hands of the Grand Secretary , which was a gigantic matter . It required some considerable time and trouble to become a Grand Officer , and every brother who attained that distinction deserved respect .
Bro . GEO . EVERETT , P . G . Treas ., in response , thanked the W . M . for the felicitous terms in which he had been kind enough to submit the tjast which had met with the cordial reception it invariably experienced . The Grand Chaplain , whose oration must have given them a great deal of satisfaction and delight , desired him to express his great regret th-it in consequence of a death in his family he was unable to remain with them . The Grand Chaplain would have much liked to be with them as there were many of his Buckinghamshire brethren present . He ( Bro . Everett ) rejoiced to be
