Tht remaining toasts were duly honoured . It came as an innovation in this part of Kent to have the speeches first and a

The minutes of the last lodge and emergency meetings having been read and confirmed , theW . M ., Bro . Saqui , initiated Mr . J ihn Reed Thomas , the ceremony being performed in an excellent manner . The W . M . elect , Bro . Alfred Haynes , was presented by Bro . Walter Martin , Past Asst . G . Purst ., and installed into the chair by the outgoing Master . The new W . M . next appointed and—with the exception of two absentees , the Treasurer and Secretary—invested the following brethren as his officers for the ensuing 12 months : Bros . Saqui , I . P . M . ; C . Smith , J . W . ; W . G . A . Edwards ,. P . M ., S . D . ; G . H . Ingle , J . D . ; L . Schneiders , I . G . ; W . J . Sowden , D . C . ; Turle Lee , Org . ; W . T . Hunt and J . H . MuIIerhausen , Stwds . ; and T . Bowler , Tyler . The delivery of the customary addresses was very ably rendered by _ Bro . Saqui and he is to be congratulated on the efficient manner in which he carried out the installation ceremony , and so closed his successful career as ruler of the lodge with eclat . The Auditors' report of the Lodge and
Benevolent Funds was received and adopted , and a gentleman having been proposed for initiation , other business followed , after which the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet . The W . M ., Bro . Alfred Haynes , on rising to propose the first toast , was received with enthusiasm . " The Queen and the Craft " having been duly honoured
, The W . M . gave "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " and said the toast needed very little introduction , as it was always received with great enthusiasm . During the many years his Royal Highness had been Grand Master , he had shown what a good Mason he was , and he hoped he might long reign over the Craft . In submitting the toast of " The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M .
sta ' ed that there was no occasion for him to recite their many excellent qualities , as they were all good men and true , or they would not have been appointed . They had a Grand Officer there that evening in the presence of Bro . Walter Martin , P . A . G . P . ( Great applause . ) They knew his sterling worth , and if he could be taken as a type of the Grand Officers , they would , he thought , be very hard to beat . '
Bro . Walter Martin , P . A . G . P ., was enthusiastically received . He said it was not the first occasion he had had the honour to respond to the toast of the Grand Officers ; but he appreciated the kindness and the happy words of the W . M . in associating his name with the toast . The I . P . M ., Bro . Saqui , on rising to propose "The Worshipful Master , Bro . Alfred Haynes , " had a hearty reception . He said it was a pleasure to him to submit the toast of the W . M ., who would excel all those who had gone before him . That he would have plenty of work there was no doubt , and he would do it satisfactorily , and he wished him the best of health , every happiness , and a successful year of office .
The W . M ., Bro . Alfred Haynes , on rising to acknowledge the toast , had an ovation . He said that he was deeply grateful to Bro . Walter Martin , P . A . G . P ., and to Bro . Saqui for the flattering terms in which they had referred to him . Might he say that he was an earnest Mason , and had done his best for the lodge , and should continue to do so to the end ! _ He was proud to be the Master of the Chough Lodge , and would do his utmost to maintain the ereat reputation it had .
The W . M . then gave "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , Bro . Horatio Saqui , " and said there was little occasion to point out his many good qualifications , as they had known him for many years past . He had that day finished a brilliant year of office , and it would be hard for him ( the W . M . ) to follow so excellent a Master , who he hoped might be spared for many years to give them the benefit of his services . The VV . M . then presented Bro . Saqui with a Past Master ' s jewel , and said it was a token of the high esteem in which he was held by the officers and brethren of the lodge , and as a very small return for the earnestness which he had evinced in the discharge of his duties ,
and his great services to the lodge , which would never be forgotten . The jewel bore the following inscription : "Presented to Bio . Horatio Saqui in consideration of his valuable services as W . M . 1 S 9 S . 99 , by the brethren of the Chough Lodge . " Bro . Horatio Saqui , I . P . M ., said that it was very gratifying to him to hear that his year of office had been satisfactory to them all . He thanked them for the Past Master ' s jewel , which he should ever honour . He felt he had been very serious as the Master , but now that he had gone through that great experience , which would never be effaced from his memory , or the kindness he had received from them all , he would rest contented , but would do his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge .
In presenting _ the toast of " The Visitors" the W . M . stated that they were honoured that evening with a good array , and on behalf of the lodge he gave them all a very hearty welcome . He associated with the toast the names of Bros . C . F . Quicke , 1531 ; H . E . Frances , P . M . ; C . J . Dawson , P . M . iSy 7 ; Joseph Davis , 1 S 5 ; Harry Eyre , VV . M . 101 ; Percy Gray , VV . M . 1597 ; and James Speller , 16 77 ; who replied .
The W . M . proposed "The Past Masters of the Lodge , " remarking that unfortunately that evening the ranks of the Past Masters were very thin , illness and other causes being the reason for their absence . In happy terms he mentioned the names of those who were present , giving a resume of the great things they had done for the lodge , and he joined the names of Bros . VV . C . Smith , P . M ., and W . Vincent Jul ! , P . M ., with the toast .
Bro . W . C . Smith , P . M ., responded , urging the members to support the Binevolent Association connected with the lodge .
Bro . VV . Vincent J ull , P . M ., also acknowledged the toast in a very able speech . In giving " The Initiate , " the VV . M . said that it was a toast of great importance , as without initiates the lodge could not go on . In the initiate that evening they hid one ot the right sort , and he extended to him the right hand of Brotherhoad . Hs hoped he had been impressed with the ceremony of his initiation , and if he followed what he would be taught in the Craft he would not go wrong .
Bro . J . K . Thomas , who had a hearty reception , stated that he thinked them for the kind way the toast had been proposed and received , and he hoped he woJld mike a good Mason , as the W . M . and members were good enough to think he would . The W . M . gave "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and said they were both splendid officers and much esteemed . They were , unfortunately , absent through illness , and they all wished them a speedy restoration to health . Bro . W . B . Marcus , P . M ., had filled the breach by acting for them , and their best thanks were due to him for his kindnessand he couDled his name with the toast .
Bro . W . B . Marcus , P . M ., said he had to respond in a dual capacity as representing both the Treasurer and Secretary . That was the only occasion the Secretary had been absent from any installation meeting of the lodge . He congratulated the W . M . on being installed , and observed that they all respected him , and he felt he would be a great success .
