ROYAL ARCH . PORT ELIZABETH . —Goodwill Chapter ( No . 711 ) . —The regular convocation of this chapter was neld in the Masonic Temple in this town , on Wednesday evening , July 12 th . There was a good attendance of companions . After the minutes of the last convocation were read and confirmed , the annual report of the Treasurer was submitted , and considered very favourable . The installation of the Principals and investiture of the officers

then took place , the ceremony being very ably performed by Comp . C T . Wheelwright , P . Z ., D . G . S . W ., assisted py Comp . jas . Kemsley , P . Z ., P . D . G . S . D ., and Comp . Steph . White . The Principals installed were : Comps . J . VV . C Mackay , P . D . G . D . of C , as M . E . Z . ; J . C . Blakeway , as H . ; and Charles Dickinson , D . G . Steward , as J . After the completion of the ceremony the companions were re-admitted , and saluted the newly-installed

Principals according to the usual custom . The M . E . Z ., Comp . j . W . C . Mackay , then proceeded to invest the following officers for the ensuing year , viz ., Comp . VV . H . Miles , S . to the banqueting room , and sat down to a substantial repast , prepared by Bro . Ouilter , of the Criterion . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , " The Healths of the Newly-Installed Principals" was proposed and well received . " The Installing Principal , " the "Newly-Elected , " and also "The Retiring Officers , " & c , were successively proposed and responded to , interspersed with harmony , the Janitor's toast bringing to an end a very pleasant evening .

Wheelwright , according to notice of motion , proposed that the period for issuing

summonses be altered from a fortnight to a week , which was duly seconded and carried " nem con . " The W . M . then said he had a very pleasing duty to perform in presenting , in the name of the lodge , a handsome Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . C T . VV . I Mouat , P . D . G . S . W ., who , as first VV . M . of the lodge , had been so active and indefatigable in his exertions to establish the lodge and

commence its working ; the efficiency to which it had advanced being mainly attributed to him , and expressed the wishes of the brethren that he might long live to wear it . Bro . Mouat , I . P . Two brethren having been proposed as candidates for advancement , the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned tothebanqueting-room under the presidency of the W . M ., where due justice was given to the excellent repast prepared by Bro . Duncan . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were then given and heartily responded lo , bringing the proceedings to a satisfactory close with the Tyler ' s toast .

The Twenty-four Hours' Road Competition promoted by the manufacturers of the "Facile" Safety Bicycle , took place on Saturday last . The event has attracted great interest among bicyclists and others , and the start was made from Anderton ' s Hotel at 12 midnight on Friday , in the presence of an immense gathering of spectators . There were twenty-six starters , and the result

° f the race was as follows : 1 st prize , value £ 10 10 s ., won ty Walter Snook ; distance ridden in the 24 hours , 214 I miles . 2 nd prize , value £ 6 6 s ., won by VV . F . Sutton ; distance ridden , 198 miles ? 3 rd prize , value £ 4 4 s ., won 7 C . H . Cole ; distance ridden , 1 S 9 miles . Besides the ™ ove , fourteen riders are entitled to the gold medal , value £ 3 3 s ., havinc accomplished I . W miles , and two to the

s "ver medal , value £ 1 is . ( 12 S miles ) . All the competitors rode " Facile " bicycles , varying in size from 3 6 m . to Mm ., and taken altogether the performance of the winner may considered the most remarkable that has yet been accomplished upon the " silent steed . " The whole arrangements for checking the race were in the hands of Mr . G . P . t-oleman , official timekeeper to the Bicycle Union .

DISTRICT GRAND LODGE . 'the Quarterly Communication of the above was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Adelaide , on Wednesday , 5 th July last , the R . W . Bro . Arthur Hard y , M . P ., R . W . Uistrict Grand Master , in the chair . The lodge was opened in ample form . The minutes of

last meeting having been read and confirmed , it was proposed by the President of Board of General Purposes ( Bro . J . H . CUNNINGHAM ) , seconded by D . G . Steward ( Bro . D . MORRIS ) , " That the Report of the General Committee be received and adopted . " REPORT OF GENERAL COMMITTEE FOR QUARTER

ENDING J 30 , 1 SS 2 . " To the Right Worshipful District Grand Master and the District Grand Lodge : " Your Committee have to report that Bro . VVicksteed having resigned the office of Secretary , they have resolved that it would be greatly to the advantage of the Craft for the District Grand Secretary to perform and be responsible

for the whole of the olfice-work and business in connection with the District Grand Lodge and General Committee , and that he should receive such remuneration as the District Grand Lodge may determine , and that the business of the District Grand Lodge should be conducted at the Freemasons' Hall , where the District Grand Secretary should attend at stated times for the transaction of such business .

" Your Committee regret to have to report that a number of lodges are neglectful in forwarding returns , and not sufficiently careful in the matter of registering brothers ' names and dates of taking Degrees , thereby causing a great deal of unnecessary work to the Secretary . Two lodges have , during the quarter , been fined for neglecting to forward returns ; your Committee have , therefore , determined

to instruct the various lodges to forward their books to them for inspection . It is also the intention of the Committee to provide a model set of lodge books for the guidance of Secretaries , and to request the W . M . of lodges to see that their records are kept in accordance with these . " Your Committee have had under their consideration the advisability of the revision of the District Grand Lodge

byelaws , and the regulations for the government of the Masonic Benevolent Fund , and have appointed a sub-Committee to carry out the suggestion . The result of their labours will be reported to you in due course for your consideration . " Your Committee have called a meeting of the members of the various lodges of the three Constitution-, to take

into consideration the holding a Masonic ball in aid of the Freemasons' Hall funds . " Your Committee have much pleasure in congratulating you upon the prosperous state of the Craft in the Province , and in assuring you that they feel confident it is of a permanent character . The acquisition of the Freemasons ' Hall has no doubt very much encouraged this increased

prosperity . " Your Committee have much pleasure in recommending to your favourable consideration the W . D . D . G . M . Bro . H . E . Downer ' s motion for a vote of £ 300 from the District Grand Lodge Fund towards the Freemasons' Hall Fund , and look confidently forward to the time when the building will be the unencumbered property of the Craft , a

consummation which will greatly tend to the honour and credit of the Fraternity , and enable the consideration of the establishment of Substantial Charitable and Educational Masonic Institutions to beentered upon with a good prospect of success . DOWNER ) : — That whereas the Country Lodges of the English Constitution are becoming more numerous and widely spread through this province , and it being essential that the District Crand Officers should , whenever summoned by the District Grand Master or his Deputy , attend the important ceremonies connected

with the Craft , it is hereby resolved by District Grand Lodge that the actual transit expenses by road or rail be defrayed b y District Grand Lodge , and that the District Grand Treasurer be instructed to pay such expenses , should the same be demanded by District Grand Officers . " After some slight discussion , the proposition was referred to the General Committee for consideration and report . There being no further business , the lodge was closed in due form .
