The Lady Mayoress ' s Tuesday afternoon receptions at the Mansion House have been discontinued for the present , but will be resumed on the first and third Tuesdays in October .

Bro . the-Earl Granville , with the Countess and family , will , it is expected , leave town this ( Friday ) afternoon for Walmer Castle , whence , after a few weeks' stay , they will go to Scotland to pay sundry visits . Bro . the Lord Mayor was the principal guest at the annual Livery dinner of the Leathersellers' Company on Tuesday , when the officers for the ensuing year were

elected in accordance with ancient custom . We must congratulate Bro . Goldney , the City Remembrancer , on the recent testimony furnished to his ability and aptitude for official duties by the increased salary which has been voted to him by the Civic authorities . Bro . the Earl of Limerick , who is President of the National Artillery Association , is at his post during the

annual meeting at Shoeburyness , which commenced on Saturday last and will continue till the close of next week . Mr . Edgar Spiegel , brother of Bro . M . Spiegel , P . M ., the chief Editor of the Illustrirte Extra Blatt , Vienna , has had the dignity of a Baron conferred upon him by his Majesty the Emperor of Austria , for his patriotic action to the State and community in general .

The Prince of VVales and Prince Albert Victor of Wales were present at the marriage , in St . George ' s , Hanover-square , on Saturday last , of Lord Alwyne Compton and Miss Mary Evelyn Vyner , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Airlie , the Countess Cowper , and the Countess of Dalhousie being also present . The Lyceum Theatre closed for the summer

holidays on Saturday , the occasion being set apart for the benefit of Miss Ellen Terry . Bro . Henry Irving delivered the usual parting address of thanks for the patronage he had received , and announced the re-opening of the theatre with " Faust " on the nth September . The Prince of Wales left Marlborough House for Cowes on Saturday last , being joined en route at Chichester by the Princess of Wales and the Princesses

Louise , Victoria , and Maud . Bro . Sir F . Knollys was one of the suite in attendance on their ] Royal Highriessts . Their Royal Highnesses are on a visit to the Queen . The Berkshire Rifle Volunteers , under the command of Bro . Lord Wantage , who have camped out this year in Queen Anne ' s Mead , near the Windsor Great Park , were inspected by H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge on Saturday , his Royal Highness expressing himself well pleased with the appearance and efficiency of the regiment .

On Saturday last , Bro . the Lord Mayor and a large number of Colonists visited the works of Messrs . Yarrow and Co ., near Blackwall , where a large number of torpedo boats are being built for the British and other Governments . The party afterwards made an excursion up the river as far as Erith on board one of the newlybuilt boats .

The famous picture known as the Colonna Raphael , painted by Raphael in 1505 , for certain nuns of Perugia , is now on view in the loan collection of the Sou th Kensington Museum . It is understood that its owner is disposed to part with it , and this opportunity of seeing the work should not be lost by our Colonial visitors and all lovers of the fine arts .

At a meeting of the R . A . Chapter Brunswick , No . 159 , held on the 30 th ult ., at the Ebrington Masonic Temple , Hobart-street , Stonehouse , the following companions were elected as officers for the ensuing year , viz .: Comps . A very gratifying ceremony took place in Dundee recently . The foundation stone of the gigantic drapery establishment in course of erection for Air . Blakeney was laid with Masonic honours , the Prov . G . Master , the Hon . F . Lyon , presiding . We have attended

many Masonic ceremonials in our time , but never remember one in honour of a private individual , and we take it that the demonstration at Dundee was in compliment to Mr . Blakeney ' s public spirit and enterprise , to say nothing ? f his personal qualifications , which make him so popular ¦ n many social circles .

According to a Reuter ' s telegram , a fund has been opened at Bombay to assist in promoting the testimonial to the Prince of VVales in connection with the Colonial and Indian Exhibition . Prince Albert Victor will this day ( Friday ) present new colours to the Buffs at Dover , and the old colours , which have been in possession of the regiment since 1 S 53 , will be placed in Canterbury Cathedral .

Bro . Charles Duval reappeared at Prince ' s Halt , Piccadilly , on Friday afternoon , the 30 th ult ., after his prolonged absence on tour round the world , and met with a very hearty welcome from the crowded audience . Bro . the Crown Prince of Germany , having burnt his right hand , visited the Royal Hospital , Berlin , as being the most expeditious way of getting the wound dressed , and on leaving was loudly cheered by the students . Bro . the Earl of Ravensworth presided at the

final meeting of the annual session held in Liverpool on Friday , the 30 th ult ., of the Institute of Naval Architects . A vote of thanks to the Mayor of the city brought the proceedings to a close . At the meeting on Thursday , the 29 th ult ., of the members and students of the City of London College , Bros . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., and E . Clarke , Q . C , M . P ., were among the gentlemen elected Vice-Presidents of the institution .

Bro . the Rev . H . M . Maugham , Vicar of Whitstable , who is S . Warden of the Graystone Lodge , No . 1915 , lias been elected VV . M . for the ensuing year , and will be installed in office at the Foresters' Hall , Whitstable , on Thursday , the 9 th September prox . We regret that in our recent report of the Henry Levander Lodge , No . 204 S , the nameof the D . P . G . Master of Middlesex should have been given as " F . Levander , "

instead of , as it should have been , " Raymond H . Thrupp . " The mistake is so obvious as hardly to need correction . Bro . Admiral Sir King Hall , of whose state of health we gave a more favourable account last week , died of an apoplectic seizure about the time the paragraph must have been written . The deceased officer had seen considerable service on the coast of Syria , in the Burmese and Chinese wars , and in the Baltic campaigns of 1 S 54-5 .

The 10 th annual distribution 01 prizes of the Mary Datchelor Girls' School , Camberwell , took place on the 2 Sth ult ., when the hall of the institution was crowded in order to witness the interesting ceremony , the chief part in which was played by Lady Halsbury , wife of Bro . Lord Halsbury , now Lord High Chancellor of England . His lordship was present , as also were Bros . VV . Beer and E . Dresser Rogers , C . C .

Our Colonial and Indian visitors went to Chatham on the 30 th ult . for the purpose of inspecting the Lines and the Military and Naval establishments connected with the Dockyard . Bros . Lord Wolseley and General Sir Redvers Buller accompanied the party . Another body of the same visitors went to Canterbury , saw the Cathedral , and lunched with the Dean and Chapter , the Archbishop being one of

the guests . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting at the Mansion House on Friday , the 30 th ult ., of the Council of the Hospital Sunday Fund , when the sum collected was announced as close on , _ , 3 S , 2 So , and it was resolved to distribute close on , £ 3 6 , 680 among 103 hospitals and 51 dispensaries , the balance of £ 1600 being devoted to the purchase of surgical appliances .

The Prince of Wales , as Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron , presided at the annual general meeting held at the Club Castle , Cowes , on Monday , the Duke of Connaught and Bros . Lord Suffield and the Earl of Dunmore being likewise present . On Tuesday , the Queen's Cup was sailed for and won by the Sleuthhound ( cutter ) , 40 tons , on her time allowance , the Genesta ( cutter ) , So tons , passing the mark boat first . The Prince

of Wales ' s schooner Aline was one of the competitors . Bro . Robert Brough , of the Dramatic Lodge , No . 1609 , Liverpool , the eminent comedian and opera bouffe actor , who has been " starring " Australia for over a year with great success , has returned to England , only temporarily though . His visit home is for the purpose of engaging talent and material for a business venture in Australia , where he purposes settling . Bro . Brough , in

fiartnershtp with Mc . Dion Boucicault , jun ., has taken a ease of the Melbourne Opera House , where they will open in November . During his few months sojourn in the Colonies , Bro . Brough has made himself a warm favourite , and he was the recipient of many tokens of "bon voyage , " prior to leaving Melbourne by the Orient mail boat Garonne . The Opera House was crowded on the occasion of Bro . Brough's benefit , amongst the audience being Bro . Sir F .

Player has worked very earnestly as curate for over three years in one of the most populous districts of Leeds , and we heartily congratulate him on his well earned preferment .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Somerset will be held at Taunton on Tuesday , the 24 th inst ., when the Earl of Carnarvon , P . G . M . of Somerset , will preside . Bro . the liatl of Carnarvon presided on " prize day " at the Newbury Grammar School , on Friday , the

30 th ult ., when the prizes were distributed to the successful pupils by the Countess of Carnarvon . The Mansion House dinner to her Majesty ' s Ministers , at which Bro . Lord R . Churchill and most of the Members of the new Cabinet will be present , will take place on the nth inst .

Bro . Lord Halsbury was sworn in as Lord Chancellor on Thursday , in Appeal Court No . 2 , the oath being administered by the Master of the Rolls , Lord Esher . P ., as President of the Metropolitan Board of Works , distiibuted a number of long service medals to men of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade , at their headquarters , Southwark , on Saturday last , Bro . H . the Duke of Connaught , who had undertaken to lay the memorial s ' one of the new Circular Ward Hospital , Hastings , has written to the Committee of Management to state that , as he leaves England for India next month , he regrets he will be unable to fulfil his engagement . Charles Du Yal will be " At Home " to the members of the dramatic profession , at the Prince's Hall , Piccadilly , on Monday next , when , in addition to his latest monologue , he will introduce to their brother and sister artistes the smallest actors and actress who have ever appeared on the London boards—the Count , Countess , and Baron Magri .

The Queen has signified her intention of raising Sir Thomas Brassey , K . C . B ., and Sir M . A . Bass , Bart ., M . P ., to the peerage , and conferring a baronetcy on Bro . T . D . Love Jones-Parry . Her Majesty has also conferred the honour of knighthood on Bro . Horace Jones , G . Supt . of Wks . Bro . Col . Sir F . Stanley will likewise be raised to the peerage .

Bros . Sir P . Cunliffe-Owen , Sir Francis Knollys , and A . J . R . Trendell were among those on whom the Queen was pleased to confer some distinction in connection with the Colonial and Indian Exhibition at a Court held at Osborne on Monday . Her Majesty was attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court and b y Bro . Sir Albert

Luncheon was served in a tent on t he lawn , and the Colonial and Indian gentlemen afterwa rds visited the Prince and Princess of Wales on board the Royal yacht Osborne and were entertained at tea by the Princess .

S TURGE P RIZE C OMPETITION . —With a view to arrive at the actual facts as to the causes of the serious financial position of the hospitals of London , and so to benefit those noble institutions , Mr . George Sturge has offered to give three prizes of £ 25 , £ 10 , and £ 5 , respectively , to the writers of the three best essays on "The Causes of the Financial Depression in the Hospitals of

London , with Suggestions for Improving their Administration and Finances . " The Rev . Canon Erskine Clarke , M . A ., the Hon . Conrad Dillon , and Mr . J . S . Wood , all of whom are experienced in hospital matters , will act as judges , and the successful essays will appear in the pages of The Philanthropist . The decipherers of the papyri which have been

brought to Vienna from El Fayoum have learned from one of them the existence of a town in Lower Egypt , all trace of which seems to have disappeared for the last 1200 years or more . The document is a papyrus , a little over 4 ft . long by ift . wide , containing a marriage contract in Greek , and is well preserved . The date is not given , but Professors Karabacek and VVessely believe it belongs to the early part of the sixth century . The bridegroom

was named Theon , the bride Maria . She had a fortune of her own amounting to 100 gold pieces , and the future husband engages to find for her food and clothing , and everything suitable for " an ordinary legitimate wife . " There are witnesses and a notarial certificate . All the parties are described as belonging to the town of Justianopolis . The editors declare that ( hey can find no mention of this place among any lists of the towns , & c , of Lower Egypt .

The Berkshire Rifle Volunteers , under the command of Bro . Lord Wantage , who have camped out this year in Queen Anne ' s Mead , near the Windsor Great Park , were inspected by H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge on Saturday , his Royal Highness expressing himself well pleased with the appearance and efficiency of the regiment .

On Saturday last , Bro . the Lord Mayor and a large number of Colonists visited the works of Messrs . Yarrow and Co ., near Blackwall , where a large number of torpedo boats are being built for the British and other Governments . The party afterwards made an excursion up the river as far as Erith on board one of the newlybuilt boats .

The famous picture known as the Colonna Raphael , painted by Raphael in 1505 , for certain nuns of Perugia , is now on view in the loan collection of the Sou th Kensington Museum . It is understood that its owner is disposed to part with it , and this opportunity of seeing the work should not be lost by our Colonial visitors and all lovers of the fine arts .

Charles Duval reappeared at Prince ' s Halt , Piccadilly , on Friday afternoon , the 30 th ult ., after his prolonged absence on tour round the world , and met with a very hearty welcome from the crowded audience . Bro . the Crown Prince of Germany , having burnt his right hand , visited the Royal Hospital , Berlin , as being the most expeditious way of getting the wound dressed , and on leaving was loudly cheered by the students . Bro . the Earl of Ravensworth presided at the

final meeting of the annual session held in Liverpool on Friday , the 30 th ult ., of the Institute of Naval Architects . Admiral Sir King Hall , of whose state of health we gave a more favourable account last week , died of an apoplectic seizure about the time the paragraph must have been written . The deceased officer had seen considerable service on the coast of Syria , in the Burmese and Chinese wars , and in the Baltic campaigns of 1 S 54-5 .

The 10 th annual distribution 01 prizes of the Mary Datchelor Girls' School , Camberwell , took place on the 2 Sth ult ., when the hall of the institution was crowded in order to witness the interesting ceremony , the chief part in which was played by Lady Halsbury , wife of Bro . S TURGE P RIZE C OMPETITION . —With a view to arrive at the actual facts as to the causes of the serious financial position of the hospitals of London , and so to benefit those noble institutions , Mr . George Sturge has offered to give three prizes of £ 25 , £ 10 , and £ 5 , respectively , to the writers of the three best essays on "The Causes of the Financial Depression in the Hospitals of

London , with Suggestions for Improving their Administration and Finances . " The Rev . Canon Erskine Clarke , M . A ., the Hon . Conrad Dillon , and Mr . J . S . Wood , all of whom are experienced in hospital matters , will act as judges , and the successful essays will appear in the pages of The Philanthropist . The decipherers of the papyri which have been

brought to Vienna from El Fayoum have learned from one of them the existence of a town in Lower Egypt , all trace of which seems to have disappeared for the last 1200 years or more . The document is a papyrus , a little over 4 ft . long by ift . wide , containing a marriage contract in Greek , and is well preserved . The date is not given , but Professors Karabacek and VVessely believe it belongs to the early part of the sixth century . The bridegroom

was named Theon , the bride Maria . She had a fortune of her own amounting to 100 gold pieces , and the future husband engages to find for her food and clothing , and everything suitable for " an ordinary legitimate wife . " There are witnesses and a notarial certificate . All the parties are described as belonging to the town of Justianopolis . The editors declare that ( hey can find no mention of this place among any lists of the towns , & c , of Lower Egypt .
