The proceedings at the Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodge , in accordance with the general expectation , passed off most satisfactorily . The vote of condolence with her Majesty the Queen on the lamented death of Prince Henry of Battenberg , was proposed and seconded by the Pro Grand Master and

Deputy Grand Master respectively , in brief but sympathetic speeches , and accepted by Grand Lodge in the same spirit in which it was offered . As for the election of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year the proposal on behalf of Bro . W . H . Bailey was , as our report tells

us , earned unanimously amidst general applause , the brethren , no doubt , realising that it was an intense relief that they should have been spared the excitement and turmoil which have attended the contest for this office at the elections of the past two years .

* * * As for Bro . W . F . Lamonby ' s motion discountenancing the objectionable practice , which has been in vogue for some time past , of touting for support , it is gratifying to find that Grand Lodge accepted it unhesitatingly . We do not imagine that a mere abstract resolution will greatly influence . the class of brethren

against whom it is directed ; but we both hope and believe that it will have a beneficial effect by preventing those with whom the fair fame of Freemasonry i something more than unintelligible entity from giving their support who canvass for it irregularly and without the slightest scruple . * * *

The regular Quarterly Communication of Mark Grand Lodge was held at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesdny , when there was a large attendance of brethren . The proceedi ngs are fully reported in another column and therefore it will suffice if we mention here that the contest for the office of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing

12 months resulted in the return of Bro . Major Clifford Probyn by a substantial majority over Bro . Capt . T . C . Walls . The report of the General Board was accepted and ordered to be entered on the minutes , and there was also brought forward a resolution of sympathy with the Queen on the great calamity which

has befallen her youngest daughter the Princess Beatrice , by the death on service in a foreign land of her husband , the Prince Henry of Battenberg , K . G . This resolution was proposed by the Pro G . Master , Bro . the Earl of Euston , and seconded by the Deputy Grand Master , Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , and , it is needless to say , was carried tiem . con .

* * * It is again our pleasing duty to congratulate the authorities and educational staff of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls on the successes achieved by the pupils of the School at the Cambridge Local Examination in December last . The whole of the 30 girls who

were entered for this examination , namely , 11 for the Preliminary and 19 for the Junior , satisfied the Examiners , while six were placed in the Honour Classes , as many as 11 distinctions in one or other of the prescribed subjects being also awarded . If we take into account that 77 passed out of the 78 girls entered for

examination by the College of Preceptors , and that the nine who presented themselves for examination by the Associated Board of the Royal College and Royal Academy of Music were similarly successful , it will be seen that the congratulations we so cordially tender to those responsible for the conduct of the School are amply justified .

The number of girls in the establishment is 269 , of whom 43 have been admitted during the year , while seven are retained for further educational purposes . It follows , therefore , that more than one-half of tho children have been entered for one or other ot the examinations we have mentioned , the actual number being 117 , and in respect of these 117 girls , the

unpleasant word "failure" has to be recorded in only one solitary instance . But these successes , brilliant as they are , do not stand alone . This is the fourth year in succession in which al ! who have entered for the Cambridge Locals have passed , while during the last seven years of 143 candidates who have entered , there have been only three failures .

* * * We must not forget to mention that the Diploma of an Associate of the London College of Music has been awarded to Miss Louise Pincombe , one of the teachers and an ex-pupil , who received all her musical training at the Institution , and obtained the highest

possible number of marks . Last , but not least , that at the recent annual test in Swimming , three silver medals and 2 S certificates were awarded to the School for proficiency in the art . * * * A meeting of the Court of Governors of the West

Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution will be held at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , this ( Friday ) evening , at 7 p . m . The business will include the consideration of the Treasurer ' s statement of account for 1 S 95 and the election of a number of children on one or other of the Funds of the

Institution-* * * Whether the Progressive lion will ever lie down with the Moderate lamb is a point we shall not concern ourselves to determine . If , however , there is any likelihood that the lodge we understand it is in contemplation to seek a warrant for in connection with the London County

Council may be instrumental in introducing a kindlier and more harmonious feeling than now exists between the rival parties in our London municipal Parliament , it may reckon upon receiving our heartiest good wishes and warmest support . If only those who may

constitute the proposed lodge , be they Progressives or Moderates , will take care to leave their municipal politics outside the door of the lodge , they will very soon learn to respect each other , and it will not be very long before they carry that mutual respect into their business proceedings ,
