A VERY URGENT and , we may add , very just and necessary appeal is being made to the public on behalf of Guy ' s Hospital . The annual expenditure , with 100 beds closed , is set down as £ 43 , 000 , but the net income from the estates belonging to the Hospital , which in 1 SS 0 amounted to £ 40 , 000 , is now reduced to £ 20 , 000 . The total number of beds for in-patients is G 21 , and the number of such accommodated during 1895 was G 411 . The out-patients attended to during the same pericd were 151 , 604 , there being in addition 33 G 3 maternity cases which were attended outside the Hospital . Here , then ,
are facts which fully justify the present appeal , to say nothing of the still more import ' ant fact that Guy's , witn St . Thomas ' s Hospital , ministers to the wants of a pirt of the London population numbering fully two millions . We are glad to hear that a Festival Dinner will be held in the month of May , at which H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has consented to preside , in furtherance of the project for raising a capital sum of £ 5 > ° " ? to make good the loss of income sustained through the depreciation in the value of land and other unpreventable causes . The project has our heartiest sympathy . Further particulars to be had on application to Mr . E . H . Lushington , Treasurer ' s House ,
Guy's Hospital , S . E ., by whom contributions will be gratefully received . COM . HARKOD ' S STORES , LIMITED . —The employees of this well-known establishment held their annual smoking concert , on Thursday evening , at Freemasons' Tavern , under the presidency of Bro . Alderman Newton , J . P ., D . L . ( Chairman of Harrod ' s Stores , Limited ) , supported by Mr . R . Woodman Burbidge and Bro . A . J . Naughton , Bro . J < Bailey being unavoidably detained by business in the house . An excellent programme ,
vocal and instrumental , had been provided , and was thoroughly appreciated by a large attendance . The artistes were Messrs . Sinclair Mantell , R . Fennings , Alexander Edwards , Herbert Emlyn , Kelson Trueman , Thomas Crook , Janes Clancy , "Dutch Daly , " Bob Rae , Wallis Arthur , Ambrose Thorne , Will Edwards , Frederic Russell , W . Sergeant Lee , and the Venetian Part Singers , who all acquitted themselves so well , that to particularise any one would be unfair .
