The lodge was opened by Bro . Mills , W . M ., and the minutes of the last regular meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was then taken for Mr . Harry Simon Hiles , and having proved favourable , he was initiated into Freemasonry in a very praiseworthy manner by Bro . J . Pollitt , P . M . Bro . C . W . Godley , P . M ., addressing the candidate at the north-east corner and also gave the charge very impressively , while the working tools were presented by Bro . T . Nesbitt , J . W . The VV . M . then took the chair ,

and Bro . J . Newell was passed to the Second Degree , the working tools being presented by Bro . VV . B . Midgley , P . M ., S . W . The ordinary business of the evening being over , "Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the visiting brethren and the lodge was closed , after which the brethren adjourned to the social board and a very enjoyable evening was spent , Bro . G . Mild presiding at the piano . The usual loyal toasts having been given .

1 he W . M . proposed " The Health of the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past . " coupling with the toast the names of Bros . A . H . Duflin , P . M ., P . G . D . C , and J . W . Millward , P . M ., P . G . S . of VV . He said that was their second meeting- since the lodge was consecrated , and they were pleased to have the Provincial Grand Officers with them , as their presence in a lodge always stimulated the officers and encouraged them in their work . As for Bro . Duffin , they all knew the deep interest he took inf Freemasonry , and that evening he had a very pleasing duty to perform—that was , on behalf of the

founders of the lodge , to present Bro . Duffin with that jewel , as a token of their esteem and admiration of his work as Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies . They were grateful for the great interest Bro . Duffin took in the consecration of that lodge , and the installation ceremony , and the assistance which he gave to all of them . They knew how well everything was done em that occasion , calling forth the praise of everyone present . He then said : Bro . Duffin , I have much pleasure in presenting you with this jewel , and assure you that it carries with it the good wishes of every member of this lodge , and I hope that you may live long to wear it .

Bro . Duffin , in responding , said : Worshipful Master , Wardens , and brethren of the Oueen Victoria Lodge , —I thank you sincerely for the very kind minner in which the health of the Prov . Grand Officers has been proposed , and for the very hearty reception it has met with . You have done me a very great honour to-night by coupling my name with the toast and presenting to me this very handsome jewel . I don't know , brethren , what I have done to deserve all this gratitude . In your goodness of heart , you have said many kind words about me , and have crowned them with this splendid token of

your affection . I can assure you that it will be prized by me so long as I shall live , and when I look upon that jewel it will always remind me of the founders of this lodge , and the truly Masonic spirit of which they are possessed . If at any time I can be of use in advancing the interests of the Queen Victoria Lodge , you may rely upon my services being readily and cheerfully given . I am p leased to see the class of members which you are receiving into your lodge , and am sure it is the desire of every one of you to promote the best interests of Masonry , and to conduct the business of this lodge in such a

way as to be worthy of the name of that most illustrious lady after whom it has been called , so that in days to come its traditions might be handed down unimpaired to posterity . Brethren , for your kindness towards me at all times and for the beautiful token which you have presented to me this evening I tender to you my most sincere thanks . The beautiful jewel that was presented bore the following inscription : "Presented to VV . Bro . A . H . Duffin , P . M ., P . G . D . of C , on Feby . iS , 1 S 9 G , on behalf of the founders as a memento of the consecration Dec . 12 , 1 S 95 . " Bros . Millward and Nieldalso responded for "The Visitors . "

Sackville Lodge , No . 1619 . The regular meeting of this lodge was held at the Crown Hotel , Ea = t Grinstead , on Tuesday last . There was a good attendance of members and a visitor from South Africa—Bro . the Rev . R . B . Matson . The W . M ., Bro . Charles Morton Wilson , presided . After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and confirmed , and letters and communications read , Bro . the Rev . Warrington Stock , late Chap . 14 SG , wis balloted for as a joining member , and unanimously elected . Two brethren having bien passed

to the Degree cf F . C , Mr . John Edmund Roden was ba'loted for as a cindidate for initiation , and , the ballot being clear , he was initiated by the W . M . On the motion of Bro . Canon W . H . Cooper , P . M ., Chap ., a Committee of Bros . E . Head , P . M ., Treas . ; A . M . Belchley , Sec ; and Mitchell , P . M ., was appointed to report as to the best means of permanently relieving an aged brother of the 1 < dge . Bro . Canon Cooper moved , and Bro . Wood , I . P . M ., seconded— " That a Committee be appointed ,

consisting cf the W . M . and the Past Masters of the lodge , to revise and improve the by-laws , especially with a view lo suggest a by-law to deal with members who were in arrear with their dues . " The motion was unanimously adopted , after which a candidate was proposed for initiation . The lodge was then closed , after three-and-a-half hours' unremitting labour . This lodge , under the able Mastership of Bro . Wilson , is doing thoroughly good Masonic work , and its working is all that could be desired .

The usual toasts followed , and after a most enjoyable meeting , the companions separated at an early hour .

Brittain in recognition cf his services for several years as Scribe E ., and a sum of £ 5 55 . was voted to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , to be placed an the list of Comp . Baddeley , Steward for that Charity . The resignations of Comps . VV . K . Hopkins , P . Z ., and VV F . Ball , P . Z ., were accepted with regret , and the former was unanimously elected an honorary member .

Chapter was then closed , and the companrons dined together , and spent a very pleasant evening , the speeches , which were short , being interspersed with songs by Comps . Lewis , janes , and others .

Hiram Chapter , No . 2416 . The installation meeting was held at Freemasons' Hill , on the 12 th ultimo . The chapter was opened by the Principals—Coups . Henry Lovegrove , P . Bon Accord ( T . I . ) . A meeting of this lodge was held at Mark Masons' Hall , on Thursday , the 2 Sth ult ., under the presidency of Bro . F . B . Page , W . M . Bros . Mignus Ohren , Treas . J . M . Bistone , I . P . M . ; ' H , Carmon . S . W . ; J . Tickle , M . O . ; J . Kiy . J . O . ; and several other brethren were present . Bro . Cipt . F . Loaer was elected a joining member . The proceedings were saddened by the necessity of passing a vote of sympathy and

condolence with Bro . Japheth Tickle and family , who have recently lost their son , aged 22 , by typhoid fever at St . Petersburg . This is the second bereavement of the like kind the family has sustained within 15 months . Brn . Tickle acknowledged the sympithetic vote , and especially the kind words of Bro . J . M . Bastone , who spoke the more feelingly in that this lodge—on the occasion of its meeting in December last—had passed a similar vote of condolence with his own family , then stricken with like bereavement .

Restormel Preceptory , No , 90 . The annual meeting of this preceptory was held in the Masonic Hall , Liskeard , Cornwall , on the 23 th ult , when Sir Knight R . A . Courtney was duly installed as E . P . for the ensuing year , the installation ceremony being ably and impressively performed by Sir Knight Major Shanks , P . E . P . The E . P . then appointed and invested the ollicers as follows : Sir Knights Dr . Nettle , LP . E . P . ; Dr . Kerswill , Constable ; Major Shanks , Marshal ; Dr . Hammond , Registrar ; T . White , Sub-Marshal ; S . Hare , Captain of Guards ; and Faull , Herald . A priory of the Order of Malta was subsequently opened , and the Degree of Knight of Malta conferred on three candidates .

St . Cuthbert s Preceptory , No . 139 . 'The meeting of this preceptory was held at Darlington on Tuesday , the iSth ult . In the absence of the E . P ., Sir Knight the Rev . R . Coulton , the chair was occupied by the Prov . Sub-Prior , Sir Knight Dr . Hill Drury . The formal business being transacted , Sir Knight John Robinson , E . P . elect , was presented for installation , and was duly

John Read , 30 ° , his duties were performed by III . Bro . Henry Lovegrove , 31 ° . Votes of sympathy with the sick brethren were pissed .

M . then vacated the chair in favour of Bro . Sarson , who rehearsed the investiture of officers , after which Bro . Fisher worked the ceremony of initiation , Bros . A . J . After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and confirmed , and letters and communications read , Bro . the Rev . Warrington Stock , late Chap . 14 SG , wis balloted for as a joining member , and unanimously elected . Two brethren having bien passed

to the Degree cf F . C , Mr . John Edmund Roden was ba'loted for as a cindidate for initiation , and , the ballot being clear , he was initiated by the W . M . On the motion of Bro . Canon W . H . Cooper , P . M ., Chap ., a Committee of Bros . E . Head , P . M ., Treas . ; A . M . Belchley , Sec ; and Mitchell , P . M ., was appointed to report as to the best means of permanently relieving an aged brother of the 1 < dge . Bro . Canon Cooper moved , and Bro . Wood , I . P . M ., seconded— " That a Committee be appointed ,

consisting cf the W . M . and the Past Masters of the lodge , to revise and improve the by-laws , especially with a view lo suggest a by-law to deal with members who were in arrear with their dues . " The motion was unanimously adopted , after which a candidate was proposed for initiation . The lodge was then closed , after three-and-a-half hours' unremitting labour . This lodge , under the able Mastership of Bro . Wilson , is doing thoroughly good Masonic work , and its working is all that could be desired .

Bon Accord ( T . I . ) . A meeting of this lodge was held at Mark Masons' Hall , on Thursday , the 2 Sth ult ., under the presidency of Bro . F . B . Page , W . M . Bros . Mignus Ohren , Treas . J . M . Bistone , I . P . M . ; ' H , Carmon . S . W . ; J . Tickle , M . O . ; J . Kiy . J . O . ; and several other brethren were present . Bro . Cipt . F . Loaer was elected a joining member . The proceedings were saddened by the necessity of passing a vote of sympathy and

condolence with Bro . Japheth Tickle and family , who have recently lost their son , aged 22 , by typhoid fever at St . Petersburg . This is the second bereavement of the like kind the family has sustained within 15 months . Brn . Tickle acknowledged the sympithetic vote , and especially the kind words of Bro . J . M . Bastone , who spoke the more feelingly in that this lodge—on the occasion of its meeting in December last—had passed a similar vote of condolence with his own family , then stricken with like bereavement .

Courtney was duly installed as E . P . for the ensuing year , the installation ceremony being ably and impressively performed by Sir Knight Major Shanks , P . E . P . The E . P . then appointed and invested the ollicers as follows : Sir Knights Dr . Nettle , LP . E . P . ; Dr . Kerswill , Constable ; Major Shanks , Marshal ; Dr . Hammond , Registrar ; T . White , Sub-Marshal ; S . Hare , Captain of Guards ; and Faull , Herald . A priory of the Order of Malta was subsequently opened , and the Degree of Knight of Malta conferred on three candidates .

St . Cuthbert s Preceptory , No . 139 . 'The meeting of this preceptory was held at Darlington on Tuesday , the iSth ult . In the absence of the E . P ., Sir Knight the Rev . R . Coulton , the chair was occupied by the Prov . Sub-Prior , Sir Knight Dr . Hill Drury . The formal business being transacted , Sir Knight John Robinson , E .
