MASONIC BENEVOLENCE IN 1898 .
There can be no question as to 18 9 8 having been by far the most successful in the annals of our Masonic Charitable Institutions . The excess of the totals received during the year over those of any of its predecessors is such that there is no need for us to compare them with those of any particular year . In
1888 , when the Royal Masonic Institution fpr C-irls celebrated the centenary of its foundation , the total of the sums received by our three Charities was £ 82 , 904 4 s . iod ., of which £ 49 , 259 4 s . 4 d . found its way into the Girls' School treasury . In 1892 , when the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution
celebrated its Jubilee , there was a substantial increase of between £ 7000 and £ 8000 , the total received by the three reaching £ 90 , 465 2 S . 7 d ., of which the Benevolent share was £ 61 , 8 49 2 s . 6 d . This year there is an enormous improvement , the total received by the three amounting to
£ 161 , 925 iSs . 3 d ., " of which the Boys' School—which celebrated its Centenary on the Ioth June—obtained £ 126 , 276 19 s . id ., while the other Institutions were favoured with receipts which will compare not altogether unfavourably witli those of ord . nary years , the total paid in for the Benevolent Institution being
£ 19 , 170 4 s . 4 d ., and that for the Girls School £ 16 , 47 8 14 s . lod . That some such returns as those we have just mentioned would be made was a foregone conclusion , but the satisfaction we feel in finding that an immense total has been realised in accordance with our Anticipations is materially enhanced bv the fact that in the case of the Girls' School and
Benevolent Institution , tlie sums received by both of them under the head of " Donations and Subscriptions " are substantially in excess of the totals announced at their respective Festivals . Of course , with so huge a total as one that reached ultimately £ 141 , 20 3 03 . 1 id ., it was not to be expected that the whole
would be paid within the period of the year ; but a reference to the table below will show that no less than £ 117 , 6 79 15 s . 8 d . was paid under this head in 18 9 8 , whilst in previous years there had been received , as Bro . MCLEOD is pleased to inform us , fully £ 8 , 000 in respect of the Centenary . Tims there has already
been received upwards of £ 125 , 000 towards the Donations and Subsciptions raised for this memorable anniversary , and as what is known as " Association Money " is received , we have every reason to hope that the full amount of over £ [ 41 , 000 vvill ultimately be made up .
The following are the Statements of Receipt by each Institution during the year which closed on Saturday last , arranged in the order in which the Festivals were celebrated , and we have much pleasure in acknowledging our indebtedness to the Secretaries—Bros . TERRY , HEDGES , and MCLEOD , for their courtesy in furnishing them ;
