NATIONAL GREAT PRIORY . It was inadvertently omitted in our report of the Great Priory that the report of the Council contained the following paragraph : " Your Council has to report that Sir Knight W . I .

Hughan has presented to Great Priory a copy , dated 18 40 , of the sketch of the "History of the Knights Templars "—by James Burns , LL . D ., F . R . S ., being the copy presented to his Royal Highness the late Duke of Sussex by the Grand Secretary of Scotland , Bro . VV . A . Lawrie . "

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the donor , vvho never misses an opportunity to place any souvenirs he may acquire in their right custody .

PRIORY OF WEST YORKSHIRE . A meeting of this priory vvas held at the Masonic Rooms , Eastwood , on Saturday , December ioth , under the banner of the Prince Edward Preceptory , No . iS . Ihe kni ghts being arranged under their respective banners , the Eminent Sub-Prior , Sir Knight J . Dunning

Kay , Past 1 st Std . Br . Great Priory , acting as the Very E . Prior , and the Great Officers , Officers , and Past Great Officers entered the hale under the arch of steel and opened the priory . The muster roll of the preceptories of the province

was called by the Registrar , when all the preceptories were represented , 52 knights being present . The Acting Very E . Prior and the Acting E . Sub-Prior , Sir Kni ght J . VV . Balme , were saluted in proper form .

The ACTING V . E . P KIOU responded , and delivered the following address : Worthy Knights , —You will remember that at our last annual meeting at Dewsbury , when I had the pleasure to preside over you , vve passed a resolution of sympath y with our beloved Prior in his severe illness .

lhis resolution I duly sent to him , and received an acknowled gment from his amanuensis . I regret to say that his illness has not passed away , although he has from time to time so far improved as to give us strong hope ; still the progress is not sufficiently permanent to warrant his coming to preside over us . That he may

yet Uo so is the constant wish of all . He sends you all his knightly love and duty , with his desire that you may retain that blessing of health to which he is at present an alien . The events spoken of by me last December us possible havo come to pass , viz .: The consecration ot a new preceptory at Heckmondwiko on the 2 olh Alay , No . 128 , and the resuscitation , on the 5 th

September , of an old preceptory—the Plains of Mamre , at Daworth , No . So . The ori ginal warrant is dated 17 th I'ebruary , 181 ) 6 , the first resuscitation warrant is dated ¦ st Alarch , 1 S 6 7 , and the present one 25 th March , 1892 . vvas unable to be present at the re-opening , which I much regret . The ceremony of consecration of the new preceptory called the Amphibious vvas performed by myself , with the assistance of our esteemed Prelate ,

Knights Templar.

Thos . C . Smythe , our Chancellor , and a large assemblage of other worthy knights , and , after some remarks suitable to the occasion by myself as Sub-Prior , an admirable oration , which will appear in the next circular , was delivered by the reverend Prelate . The worthy Knight Past Preceptor , Thos . Pickles , vvas duly placed in the chair as the first Preceptor of the new

preceptory , and he duly installed his oilicers so far as possible , and received numerous propositions of candidates vvho desired to join this beautiful Degree , vvhich I wish was more appreciated and sought after . Now , a few words as to the Prince Edward Preceptory . The warrant is dated April 16 th , 1812 , and a photograph of it has been

deposited in the archives of the province . It vvas worked continuously until ISSI , and in the year 1869 I had the privilege to be installed in this encampment , and remained a member thereof until 1 S 72 , when the Fidelity Preceptory , Leeds , vvas founded , and of vvhich I vvas the first Eminent Commander . From February , 1 SS 1 , to February , 1 S 84 , no meetings vvere held , owing to the

non-attendance of the members , although circulars were issued . In 1885 the preceptory was revived , mainly through the exertions of our energetic Sir Knight John Marshall , and the re-opening meeting vvas held August 19 th , 1 S 85 , when the V . E . Prov . Prior , T . W . Tew , and the Sub-Prior , J . W . Kay , attended , and the former delivered an inaugural address , which is fully

recorded in the minute book and in your circulars of Gth December , 1 SS 6 . The V . E . Prior of Lancashire , Captain C . R . N . Beswick-Royds , also was present . Two brethren were installed as knights on this occasion , viz ., Bros . Fred Greenwood and Joseph Longbottom . At the time of the revival there vvere 13 knights on the muster roll , and the additions had been :

1 SS 5 , two knights ; 1 SS 6 , one knight ; 1 S 90 , five knights ; and 1 S 91 , two knights ; 15 knights on the roll now . The Priory of Alalta , attached to this preceptory , is also in working order , and during the last year eight kni g hts have taken the Degree , making a total of 13 members . The minute books from the commencement of the preceptory to the present

time are carefully preserved , and it is a notable fact that the preceptory vvas formed and working here before a Craft lodge vvas held . The only previous meeting of the Priory of West Yorkshire at Eastwood was in 1866 , which vvas called for the purpose of installing the Rev . Joseph Senior , LL . D ., as the Grand Commander of West Yorkshire . Sir

Knight Wm . Shackleton is the only present member of the Prince Edward Preceptory vvho was at that meeting . Sir Knight Henry Smith , was present and appointed Chancellor of the Province of West Yorkshire . Since which they have lost by death Sir Knight Thomas Schofield , vvho was installed in the year 1867 . The number of knights in the province is slowly though

gradually increasing . In the year 1 S 82 when our Very Eminent Prior vvas installed our chief , vve numbered 115 , the returns for January , i 89 i , gave iS 4 subscribing knights , and the number has been increased in 1892 to 196 . In 1891 , 21 companions vvere installed or received as joining knights . We have lost during that year by death 4 , by resignation 4 , and in arrear 1 , showing an

increase of 12 during the years . It is my sorrowing duty to announce to you thc death since our last meeting of Colonel Shadwell Clerke . As a citizen , soldier , Alason , and knight he vvas pre-eminent , and it is our sad duty to record on our minutes our great loss . The Earl of Euston has been appointed his successor and vvith his record of work in Templary we may augur

success and happiness to this our militant degree . I have also to inform you that a most worthy knight , the Vice-Chancellor of Great Priory , Wm . Tinkler , has resigned his ollice which he has so well and faithfully filled for many years past . We have on many occasions had the benefit of his consummate knowledge , and advice , and assistance , and whilst regretting his

resignation vve heartily wish him health and strength to enjoy his well earned retirement and we present him vvith our hearty good wishes . During the year 1 S 92 we have to record the death of Sir Knights T . Schofield , installed in Prince Edward Preceptory in 186 7 ; Arthur Briggs , installed in Faith Preceptory in 1869 ; Robert D . Kendall , installed in Salamanca Preceptory in 1870 ;

James France , installed in Fearnley Preceptory in 18 S 3 ; the Rev . W . C . Lukis , installed in Fidelity Preceptory in 18 79 ; and Frederick Greenwood , at the Cape of Good Hope . I have during the year approved of the names of 22 companions as candidates for Templary . I havo the pleasure to state that our Worth y Knig ht W . F . Smithson has had the dignity of office

in the Great Priory during the past year . Again has the season of the year como round for the appointment of officers , and f can only trust that you will approve of the choice , which I assure you i . s done in the best interests of Knight Templary . The officers for the past year have well supported me , and 1 tender to them my best thanks for their assistance , particularly to the

Chancellor , Sir Knight T . W . Alonckman . The roll of Great Officers and officers was called b y the Sub-Prior , and letters of apology were received from 52 kni ghts . The minutes of the meeting held at Dewsbury on Saturday , December 1 sth , 1891 , were presented for confirmation , which was proposed , seconded , and carried .

Sir Knight C . DI . MSD . VI . I ; , Treasurer , presented the balance-sheet , which showed a balance of £ ^ i 3 s . Oil . on general account , and £ 1 7 s . 8 d . alms account , which was passed . Sir Knight John Royle was elected Teeasurer . The Acting V . E . Prior appointed and invested the following knights :

Since which they have lost by death Sir Knight Thomas Schofield , vvho was installed in the year 1867 . The number of knights in the province is slowly though

success and happiness to this our militant degree . I have also to inform you that a most worthy knight , the Vice-Chancellor of Great Priory , Wm . Tinkler , has resigned his ollice which he has so well and faithfully filled for many years past . We have on many occasions had the benefit of his consummate knowledge , and advice , and assistance , and whilst regretting his

resignation vve heartily wish him health and strength to enjoy his well earned retirement and we present him vvith our hearty good wishes . Again has the season of the year como round for the appointment of officers , and f can only trust that you will approve of the choice , which I assure you i . s done in the best interests of Knight Templary .
