" I am deeply sensible of and heartily appreciate your kind reference to . my actions in connection with the various ollices in Masonry which I have had the honour of occupying , and the knowledge that my actions have met with the approval of the Brethren will be an incentive to me to continue to do all that lies in my power to deserve the confidence and esteem which you have so warmly extended to me , and for which I cannot sufficiently thank you .

" Your . allusion to my work in connection with the Masonic Charities touches a sympathetic chord in my heart , and I am pleased , indeed , to know that my efforts in this direction have been observed by my Brethren , particularly so as it is a department of our work in which I have always had the most heartfelt interest , and it is worthy of all the attention that can be bestowed upon it . The opening of the Iodge was followed by the confirmation of the minutes and the adoption of a satisfactcry Audit Report . Bro . G . J . Gissing was then installed as W . M . in a very impressive manner by Bro . E . Noyes , and invested the following officers : Bros . Edward Noyes , I . P . M . ; Charles A . Hales , P . M ., S . W . ; Henry Mitchell , j . W . j William Perrin , P . M ., Treas . ; Charles Allen , P . M ., Sec . ; Horace J . Mitchell , S . D . ; Richard J . Richards , J . D . ; Frank Puttnam Smith , I . G . ; Frederick W . Bishop , D . C . ; David Haes , Stwd . ; William Hugh Wood , Org . ; and James Rawles , Tyler . Other business was transacted , and the lodge was closed .

An excellent banquet followed , Bro . Marcham superintending , and the usual toasts were subsequently given . Bro . S . Cochrane , speaking on behalf of " The Grand Officers , " said it was an exceptional pleasure for him to be present , as he first saw the light of Freemasonry in this lodge many years ago . This lodge also subscribed liberally to the testimonial with which he was presented on his appointment as a Grand Officer . Revisiting this lodge al-vays seemed like coming back to one ' s own family , and he hoped to live to continue to enjoy the friendship of the brethren in the lodge .

Bro . V . Abrahams , P . G . P ., said the toast inspired two thoughts . One of thankfulness to those who had served in Grand Office , and hopefulness for those to be appointed in the future . Bro . E . Noyes , I . P . M ., proposed "The W . M ., " and said that Bro . Gissing had been a constant and regular attendant at the lodge ever since his initiation 11 years ago , and had shown so much skill and ability in the various offices that they were sure he had well deserved and merited the honour conferred upon him . There was no need to take

up their time by extolling the W . M . ' s virtues , and his assistance in the working of the Iodge was common knowledge . He was imbued with the true spirit of Masonry having a desire to be happy and to unite in the grand design of communicating happiness to others . His labours on behalf ol the Masonic Charities reflected the greatest honour . The Boys' School had already benefited and the W . M . had now consented to represent the lodge at the coming festival of the Girls' School when they hoped to have a bumper list . It only remained to wish him a happy year of office , trusting he would have health

and strength to carry through his work as it ought to be done . Bro . G . J . Gissing , W . M ., returned thanks , and said he only hoped he should be able to perform the duties of his important office to their satisfaction for then he should think he was entitled to some credit . He had no mean task before him for those who had preceded him in the chair during the last 30 years were not of ordinary stuff , and if he could only equal them he should think he had done a great deal . He felt he had the good wishes and would have the earnest support of every member . At the Boys ' School Centenary they did far more than he expected , and he knew they would do their best at the next Girls' School Festival .

Bros . C . Cheetham , P . P . G . W . E . Lanes ; Gompertz , P . M . ; and Berg , P . M . ; responded on behalf of " The Visitors . " The W . M . then gave the toast of "The I . P . M ., " referring to his excellent services , and presenting him with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel . Bro . E . Noyes , I . P . M ., expressed his appreciation for the gift and for the support accorded him during the past year , and other toasts having been honoured , the Tyler ' s toast closed a successful evening .

Middlemiss , M . D ., the W . M . elect , into the chair of the lodge , Bro . Hill Drury , M . D ., acting as D . C . Bro . Middlemiss then invested his officers as follows : Bros . G . G . ; and Rev . F . D . Brookes , M . A ., Prov . G . C ., and W . N . Cochrane , B . A ., Stewards . The lodge voted £ 5 5 s . to the Durham Masonic Festival and £ 2 2 s . to the Endowment Fund of St . Paul's Church , Malta .

Bro . E . Noyes , I . P .
