say , without for a moment detracting from the excellencies of these Degrees , that the Degree I have through your kindness been permitted to take this evening , has very much , and more than ever impressed me with the beautiful tenets and teachings of Freemasor . ry . Based upon every principle this is of the purest and most appealing to the human mind , it is .

at the same time , singularly historical , poetical , and touchins » and as I said before appeals to thebest attributes of the hJBrt by its beautiful and impressive ritual and teachings . Alost Excellent and companions , as 1 have this evening taken upon myself the responsibilities of a Royal Arch Mason , I shall , I trust , be enabled to carry out to the very letter those which appear to be the guiding VVcstor

principles taught by it ; and kind as Comp . , has been : n referring to something that he is pleased to call " a good ' act , " 1 can only say that I believe that I am only carrying out the principles instilled into me some sixteen years ago , when I first became a Mason , and , therefore , have simply done as other brother would have done with my

E . Z ., Comp . John Hayes . The installation ceremony

was very ably gone through by Comp . James Hall , P . Z ., P . P . G . Officer , in a very able manner , and to the great delight of the companions and visitors , among whom were : P . G . Officer Gleridirining arid Comp . Nathan , P . Z ., a much respected and ever frequent and welcome visitor ; also Comp . Outram from the Alexandra Chapter . 'The officers appointed were as follows : Comp . John Hayes ( for the

second year ) Z . ; Henry Darbyshire ( also for the second year ) as H . ; John Greenup , as J . ; Julius Arensberg , P . Z . as 'Treas . ; John Brown , P . S . ; H . Immediately after the opening of the lodge , the presence of Bro . Col . Ford , D . P . G . AI ., was announced , who demanded admission . By command of the W . AL , the Prov . Grand Officers left the hall , and escorted the D . P . G . M ., who on his entrance , " was received with the usual honours . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed , also the Treasurer ' s accounts , duly audited , which

were passed . I he chair was then taken by Bro . Dr . Hopkins , Past G . J . W ., who , as usual during the few past years , had undertaken the duty of Installing Alaster . Bro . C . VV . Radway was presented to him as VV . M . elect . After the customary preliminary proceedings , the brethren below the chair were dismissed , and a Board of Installed Alasters was conslituted , in whose presence Bro . Radway was

inducted into the chair ot Adoniram , and the Board was closed . On the return of the brethren , the new W . AL , the Wardens , the Overseers , and the brethren . It . must be added that the impressiveness of the ceremony was greatly increased by the introduction of musicadmirably rendered by the Organist

, and an efficient choir , and that the whole passed off with great eclat , all concerned being fully up to the work . The W . M . read several letters of apology for absence , among them notably those from Bro . R . C . Else , Prov . Grand Alaster for Somerset , and Bro . the Rev . Davey , Prov . Grand Master for Gloucestershire . 'The former fully intended to be present , but was unavoidably detained in

London , whither he had gone to be invested as Grand Deacon in the Grand Craft Lodge of England on the previous evening . A cordial vote . of thanks was passed to Bro . Dr . Hopkins for his services as Installing Alaster , also to the Deputy Prov . Grand Alaster for his attendance , and to the retiring Alaster for his conduct in the chair during the past year . Bro . officers to make themselves fully acquainted with their duties and to become perfect in their parts . He concluded by proposing several candidates for advancement , Bro . Penley announced that arrangements were in progress for forming a new Mark Iodge at Wootton-under-Edge in June , and invited the attendance and co-operation of brethren from Bath . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Castle Hotel , where a large party partook of supper .

MALTON . —Fitzwilliam Lodge ( No . 277 ) . —On Wednesday , the 26 th ult ., the installation meeting of this lodge took place in the Alasonic Hall . The lodge was opened by Bro . . J .-Marshall , VV . M ., Prov . G . Deacon , who was supported by his officers and several brethren , Bro . T . B . Whytehead , P . AL , of York , acting as I . P . M . The minutes having been confirmed , Bro . T . B .

Whytehead took the chair , and proceeded to instal the W . AL elect , Bro . J . Staniland , in the chair of A ., after which Bro . Staniland appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . Fitchett , and at which the party met and thoroughly enjoyed themselves . An adjournment was then made for a brief space to the beautiful terraced

gardens of the hotel , whence a charming view is obtained of the Vale of Derwant , the stream skirting the grounds , and disappearing amongst the wooded slopes of Castle Howard . On resuming their places at the festive board , the toast list was proceeded with , the W . AL presiding . In replying to "The Health of . the Installing Alaster , " Bro . VVhytehead gave a sketch of the history ot the

Degree , and allu'ded to the practical use of the study of Masons' marks in connection with arch . uology and architectural history ; and complimented the members cf the Fitzwilliam Lodge on the success which had attended their efforts .

The I . P . M . took the opportunity of thanking the brethren for the support and kindness shown to him during his year ot office , and stated that during the year there had been seventeen advancements . A number of other toasts followed , and a most social and agreeable evening was passed .

Bro . Matier , as on former occasions , proving himself to be a most able exponent of the quaint and impressive ritual appertaining to these degrees . Much of the success of the proceedings was due to the exertions of Bros . A . Williams , T . Poore , and D . AL Dewar , in the discharge of their respective offices . 'The election of W . AL for the year ensuing resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . A . Williams , and Bro . Dewar was re-elected Treasurer . It

was then unanimously agreed that those members who might desire it could commute their annual donations of five shillings to a life membership upon payment of two guineas . The sum of len guineas having been voted to the Boys' School , the council was dissolved , and the brethren adjourned to the Albany Hotel , Thcobald ' s-road , where an excellent repast was done full justice to . A few toasts were subsequently given .

Grand Master for Gloucestershire . 'The former fully intended to be present , but was unavoidably detained in

London , whither he had gone to be invested as Grand Deacon in the Grand Craft Lodge of England on the previous evening . A cordial vote . of thanks was passed to Bro . Dr . Hopkins for his services as Installing Alaster , also to the Deputy Prov . Grand Alaster for his attendance , and to the retiring Alaster for his conduct in the chair during the past year . Bro . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Castle Hotel , where a large party partook of supper .

gardens of the hotel , whence a charming view is obtained of the Vale of Derwant , the stream skirting the grounds , and disappearing amongst the wooded slopes of Castle Howard . On resuming their places at the festive board , the toast list was proceeded with , the W . AL presiding . In replying to "The Health of . the Installing Alaster , " Bro . VVhytehead gave a sketch of the history ot the

Degree , and allu'ded to the practical use of the study of Masons' marks in connection with arch . uology and architectural history ; and complimented the members cf the Fitzwilliam Lodge on the success which had attended their efforts .

The I . P . M . took the opportunity of thanking the brethren for the support and kindness shown to him during his year ot office , and stated that during the year there had been seventeen advancements . A number of other toasts followed , and a most social and agreeable evening was passed .

AL for the year ensuing resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . A . Williams , and Bro . Dewar was re-elected Treasurer . It

was then unanimously agreed that those members who might desire it could commute their annual donations of five shillings to a life membership upon payment of two guineas . The sum of len guineas having been voted to the Boys' School , the council was dissolved , and the brethren adjourned to the Albany Hotel , Thcobald ' s-road , where an excellent repast was done full justice to . A few toasts were subsequently given .
