EXETER . St . John the Baptist Lodge ( No . 39 ) . — The installation meeting was held on St . John the Evangelist ' s Day , and was an exceptionally representative assembly of the brethren in and around Exeter . Both the out-going W . M . and the in-coming one being well-known brethren in Exeter , and the Installing Master being noted for the
efficient way in which he performs the ceremony no doubt combined to bring about one of the largest private lodge meetings held since the installation nf Bro . Shorto 12 months ago . Amongst those present were Bros . Goddard Rogers , D . P . G . M . ; Hughan , P . P . G . W . Cornwall , P . G . D . England ; John Stocker , P . P . G . W . and P . P . G . Treas . ; Samuel Jones , P . P . G . W . ; John Lane , P . P G .

Shorto , W . M . ; Andrew Hope , S . W . ; and Sam . Lock , J . VV . Visitors : Bros . Harry Perry , P . M . 106 ; J . Munday , I . P . M . 1125 ; F . A . Dunsford , P . M . 304 j F . S . Sprague , P . M . and J . F . Railing , P . M ., of 1332 ; John Taylor , P . M . 1402 ; Henry Mann , S . W . 106 ; VV . Bradford , S . W . S 62 ; Russell Coombe , S . W . 112 ; S . W . Melhuish , S . W . S 47 ; James Tucker , S . VV . 1254 ; F . J . Shapcott ,
J . W . 1254 ; James Bell , 1334 ; C . H . Deeks , 1125 ; and many other brethren , numbering upwards of 60 altogether . A unique feature of the gathering was that all three of the honorary members of the lodge were present . After the lodge was opened the two Past Grand Deacons , Bros . Hughan and Rogers , were duly saluted according to their rank . The senior Past Master of the lodge , Bro .
Easton , presented the VV . M . elect , Bro . Andrew Hope , S . W ., and the ceremony was then proceeded with , the W . M . and Bro . John Stockton doing it between them . The newly-installed W . M . then invested his oflicers . Bro . Shorto was specially thanked for the exceptional way in which he had fulfilled the duties of VV . M . during the past j ear , and the earnest wish was expressed that he might
soon be testote-4 to health . Before leaving , he as Charity Steward , gave an account of what had been done by St . John the Baptist Lodge towards supporting the Charities since he was appointed to that office in 1 SS 7 . Towards the Benevolent Fund £ 41 ios . had been contributed , R . M . L for Boys , £ 70 7 s . j R . M . I , for Girls , £ 7 7 s . ; Fortescue Annuity Fund , £ 14 2 s . ; Devon Masonic Educational
Fund , £ 92 ns . Gd . ; Exeter Masonic Charities Association , £ 5 ss . ; and in miscellaneous Charity , £ 35 13 s . 1 id ., making the creditable total of £ 266 16 s . 5 d . contributed by the lodge over and above the individual contributions of the members through other channels . Bro . Shorto was much applauded , as , indeed , he well deserved to he , for he has so organised the system of contributions as to bring his
lodge forward as an example and himself , as Charity Steward , a pattern to the Masons of the province . At the next Festival of the Ro-yal Mr . sonic Institution for Girls he goes up as a Steward and it is to be hoped he will be well supported on that occasion . Bro . Hughan spoke at some length on the antiquity and honourable history of the lodge , incidentally referring to
the records preserved in the separate AIaster Alasons ' minute book , when it was customary to keep the minutes of each Degree separate . Being , like the newly-installed W . AL , a life member of Mother Kilwinning , No . o ( S . C ) , while he , as a member of Quatuor Coronati Lodge , and Bro . Hope as a Corresponding Member of that famous lodge , were still further united in a bond of Brotherhood .
Bro . Lane made some interesting remarks upon the lodge , of which he had been made an honorary member . In the evening the brethren , to the number of nearly so , dined tocethcr in the New London Hotel , the W . M . presiding , supported by the D . P . G . AI ., Bros . Hughan , Stocker , Jones , Lane , Taylor , James Jerman , and other members of the lodge .
GUERNSEY . Doyle ' S Lodge ( No . 84 )— The annual meeting for the installation of the W . M . of t ' lis well-known lodg : took place on Wednesday , the 27 th ult . Doyle ' s Lodge has been somewhat unfortunate in its Alasters of late years . In 1802 Bro . Giles , of South African fame , was in the chair ,- but nearly all his year nf oflice was spent in
Mashonaland ; and in 1 S 93 , Bro . Pickering had to return to Kngland , having occupied the chair on only two occasions . Happily Bro . Hamel , P . AI ., the I . P . M . of 1 S 02 , proved a tower or strength , filling the gap admirably , never failing to be present , and always conducting the duties of the chair in a most excellent manner . He certainly well deserved the Past Master ' s jewel which was presented to him that even-

P . AI . 'The ceremony of installation was performed in an able and impressive manner by the retiring W . AL , Bro . J . VV . Blackburn , assisted by Bro . It was resolved to purchase a safe at a cost not exceeding £ 20 for the better preservation uf the lodge record ;; other votes for various purposes were also made . On behalf of the lodge , the W . AL presented to Bro . J . VV . Blackburn , his immediate predecessor , a Past Master ' s jewel , to mark
the conclusion of a very successful year in the chair , during which the lodge has greatly prospered . " Hearty good wishes " and congratulations having been tendered by the brethren , the lodge was closed Ihe Festival of St . John was afterwards celebrated by the customary banquet , at which upwards of 75 brethren were
present . The usual loyal and Craft toasts were given , and it transpired during the evening there was every probability that the lodge would amply support the recently-appointed Provincial Grand AIaster , Bro . the Right Hon . W . L . Jackson , on the occasion of his presiding over the annual Festival of the Boys' School in J une next .

J . E . Cawthorne , I . G . ; and J . H . Ford and F . Wright , Stwds . Representatives to the various Charities were elected , and the lodge was closed . The brethren then proceeded to celebrate the Festival of St . John , which it is their annual custom to keep after the installation ceremony . A most excellent banquet had been provided by Bro . A . Powolny , which was highly appreciated .
Ihe usual loyal and Alasonic toasts having bcen proposed and duly honoured , Bru . Marsh , I . P . M ., roseandsiid that he had to propose the toast of the evening , viz ., that of " The Worshipful AIaster , " whom he had just installed , and it gave him the greatest possible pleasure to propose this toast and to place Bro . Millington in the chair of the lodge . His personal knowledge of Bro . Millington , both as a Mason and a
fellow-citizen , was one of unbroken satisfaction . As a Alason he had known Bro . Millington from the time of his initiation , since which he believed he had never omitted to attend one single lodge or instruction meeting of the lodge , and by his close attention to his Alasonic duties he had qualified himself to be classed amongst the most efficient brethren of the Craft . As a citizen he had known him from the days of his boyhoodand he was pleased to say his
, respect for him had increased with increasing years . In conclusion , he ( Bro . Alarsh ) said that in Bro . Alillington they had a AIaster who would uphold the honour and dignity of Defence Lodge with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the brethren , and he called upon them to drink to the health of the W . AI ., and these remarks were received with acclamation by the brethren , who duly honoured the toast .
The VV . AI . suitably responded , and , thanking the brethren for the honour they had done him , he said that when he was initiated into Masonry he little thought that in the space of eight years he would be installed in the chair of the W . AI . He had certainly devoted himself to the study of the art , as he loved Alasonry , and desired to make himself fully acquainted with it , and the more he had studied it the more he appreciated the privilege of belonging to
this honourable and Antient Fraternity . For himself , he feared Bro . Marsh had too highly eulogised his ability and qualifications . He had thoroughly enjoyed the work in the various offices he had been called upon to fill , but he approached this , the highest honour which his lodge could confer upon him , with some amount of trepidation and fear as to his ability to do sufficient honour to their choice , but he assured the brethren that he appreciated their kindness
and conhdence and would do all in his power to bring credit on himself and honour on the Craft . " The Health of the VVorshipful Alasters of other Leeds Lodges" was proposed by Bro . Swale , and responded to by the representatives who were present . The Worshipful AIaster proposed "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Henry Alarsh , " and said that in Bro . Alarsh they had had a most zealous and excellent AIaster , and although they had only one opportunity during the past
year of seeing his working ot a candidate through the various Degrees , yet they were satisfied of his high ability to perform his duties , and the manner in which he had performed the office of Installing Alster that evening had enhanced his opinion of Bro . Alarsh ' s capacities for any work which he mi ght be called upon to do . He thanked Bro . Marsh for ihe way he had conducted the business of the lodge during the p ist year , and especially referred , to
the enjoyable meetings which he had provided in the shape of Alasonic lectures and addresses by Bros , the Very Rev . the Dean of York , C . L . Alason , Watson , Wainman Holmes , and Shackles , all of which had been much appreciated and had promoted a deep interest in the lodge . Bro . Alarsh , in the course of his reply , drew attention to the good work which is sought to be done by the Quatuor Coionati Lodge in fostering a feeling for deeper research
into the origin and use of Freemasonry , and said that he had been influenced by a desire to interest his brethren and the Craft in Letds by the institution of those addresses , and he . trusted that the same feeling would pervade his successors and other lodges , and prompt them to encourage the brethren to seek a full knowledge of their Alasonic art , which would well repay the time and trouble expended
upon it . He thanked tho brethren for the kind and hearty manner in which the toast had been received . Other toasts followed . The musical portion of the proceedings was provided by Bros . Tooke , Stewart , , Webb , King , and others , and a most enjoyable festival was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toast . OXFORD .

The brethren subsequently adjourned to a banquet in the large room which had heen tastefully decorated for the occasion , and at which upwards of 70 were present . J .

OXFORD .
