Craft Masonry.

Bro . L . W . Harvey , P . M ., Sec , proposed "The Initiate , " and said they were particularly pleased to welcome Bro . Meyers , coming as he did from such a good stock . Bro . W . Meyers Having responded , the W . M . submitted the toast of " The Visitors . " Bro . C . Dearing , P . P . G . S . of W . Berks , in response , < -aid hc was indebted for his invite to Bro . White , who had been elected a joining mrniVr , and who would prove a

worthy one . He was proud to have seen the W . M . installed into the chair , having known him for many years as a resident of the same parish . The manner in which the W . M . performed his duties must be gratifying to the members , who would have an admirable Master . Bro . J . S . Tichener , Harmony Lodge , No . 17 , Washington , U . S . A ., next replied . He said that in the declining years of his life surely his lines had fallen in pleasant

places . Twenty-one years ago he had the distinguished honour of being entertained by one of their lodges in that hall . At that time he was W . M . of his lodge , and on the night of the meeting of the lodge in Freemasons' Hall he was re-elected to succeed himself and preside for the second time . Six weeks before that time he had the honour , as W . M . of his lodge , to entertain one of their distinguished citizens and distinguished Masons—Bro . Lord Alfred

Churchill . Upon his arrival in London , shortly after , he was invited by the distinguished Grand Secretary at that time—Bro . lohn Hervey—to witness the installation of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales as M . W . G . M . On the present occasion , after a lapse of 21 years , by the kind invitation of his worthy Bro . Meyers , J . W ., he was permitted to approach the mystic shrine of Albion Lodge . Venerable with age , and in the language of the prophet , he stood on

Holy ground . He was not unmindful of the great good which a lodge of antiquity such as this must have performed ; more far-reaching thai human mind could conceive . It was a pleasure and a pride to him that he was permitted to meet his brethren that night , and when he re turned to the land of his birth across the water , one of the pleasantest memories he should take with him was that meeting , which he had enjoyed beyond anything he was capable of expressing in words . Forthe very pleasant

introduction in which the W . M . presented him to the brethren , and the manner in which they had received him , he thanked them most cordially , and assured them that nothing would give him greater pleasure than to meet the brethren in his own lodge—the Harmony Lodge—and give them a royal and a fraternal greeting . Bros . B . Johnson and Levy also responded . "The Past Masters" and other toasts were given ere the pleasant proceedings were terminated with the Tyler's

toast . Under the able direction of Bro . Geo . Pritchard , P . M ., a charming programme of music was rendered . Bro . Pritchard contributed two of his well-known and highly appreciated musical sketches , Bro . Egbert Roberts was in good form in a couple of songs , and Bro . G . T . Miles delighted the brethren with two harp solos , which were keenly enjoyed and heartily encored .

Lodge was foimally opened , and the minutes read and

confirmed , after which Mr . J . R . Smale , having been approved by ballot , was initiated into Freemasonry . Bro . George Horton was presented as W . M . elect , and installed by Bro . J . Braham , I . P . M ., into the chairin an impressive manner . The following officers were appointed and invested : Bros . C F . Williams , S . W . ; E . Horton , J . W . ; F . Dunn , P . The sum of 20 guineas was voted from the bdge funds to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . Other business was transacted and the lodge closed . After a well-served banquet , th *; customary toasts were heartily given and received , the speeches being marked

by commendable brevity . Bro . J . Braham , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " said the present occupant of the chair was very popular in the lodge , and was a brother who had done his very best to fit himself for the position . The brethren would all cordial !/ wish Bro . Horton a prosperous year of office , which he thoroughly deserved . Bro . George Horton , VV . M ., thanked the brethren very for the

heartily kind manner in which the toast had been oroposed and received . The I . P . M . had said he was Popular in th : lodge , and li » hoped he had no enemies in it . When he sit m xt to the W . M , on his initiation night , and ascertained the duties of ih , - clnir , he thought he should n ; ver aspire to them , but lis hid been trying to reach the position , and had at la . t succeeded . He sincerely trusted he should have a successful and prosperous year of office , and would do his best to realise it .

fi , 1 n » !* short | y afterwards proposed " The Health of the I . I , M ., ' and said the lodge had not possessed such a Master as Bro . Braham for some time , for it was a pleasure to see him work the cerem nies . He ( the W . M . ) had much pleasure in presenting to the I . P . M . the Past Master ' s jewel voted by the lodge , in recognition of the ability he had displayed in the performance of his duties . . Bro . J . Braham , I . P . M ., thanked the brethren for the jewel so generously voted to him . When he accepted office fi ? ,-, ? breth , ' ' * would do his best , and to the be-t 01 his skill and ability he had been true to his obligation .

Craft Masonry.

If he had received their approbation , it was the only reward he sought . He thanked them very much for the spontaneous manner in which they had drank his health . "The Initiate" having been appropriately replied to by Bro . J . R . Smale , the W . M . gave "The Visitors" in cordial terms . Bro . J . Thwaites , P . M . 20 S 7 . acknowledged the toast ,

and said he was very pleased indeed to accept an invitation to hi present and renew old associations . Nearly all the knowledge he had of Craft Masonry was obtained in the Royal Jubilee Lodge of Instruction , of which he had pleasant recollections It behoved every brother to become acquainted with the ritual , and qualify himself for a speedy call to the chair , for he might not have the opportunity of

acquiring the knowledge in after life when he found it to be necessary . He wished the W . M . and brethren all a Happy New Year . Bro . C . Wise , P . M . 115 S , referred to the able and effic ' un' manner in which the I . P . M . carrifd out the duties of Installing Master , and said it was the duty of all outgoing Alasters to install their successors . To enable them

to do this they should attend lodges of instruction , where they could gain all the information necessary . He congratulated the W . M ., whom he had known as a boy , and wished him a successful year of office . Bro . Drummond also responded , after which "The Treasurer , Secretary , and Past Masters" was given by the W . M ., who spoke in high terms of the services rendered

by the Treasurer and Secretary . Bros . F . Dunn , P . M ., Treas ., and A . Darch , P . M ., Sec , replied , after which "The Officers" and Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . During the event mus ' cal selections were given by Bros . Barton , Org ., McCann , Cohen , Banting , and Fraser , and Bro . VV . S . Wagstaff carefully attended to the comfort of the brethren .

Joppa Lodge ( No . 188 ) . —The installation meeting of this centenary lodge was held on the ist ins :., at Freemasons' Tavern , under the presidency of Bro . H . Garrard , W . M . The worshipful brother was supported by a good attendance of brethren , among whom were Bros . Barnett Weigel , S . W . ; M . Seizenberg , J . W . ; A . G . Dodson , P . M . ; H . Lazarus , P . M . ; VV . J . Gardner , P . M . ;

A . Cohen , P . M . ; J . Bolibol , P . M . ; Lewis Wall , P . M . ; L . Lazarus , P . M ., Sec ; J . | . Lyon , Treas . ; Rev . S . J . Roco , S . D . ; E . Davy , J . D . ; H . S . Onken , I . Hands to the Second Degree , and as other candidates for Masonic honours were not in attendance , he immediately proceeded with the installation of Bro . Barnett Weigel , S . W ., as the new W . M . of the lodge , an office to which the worthy brother was unanimously elected at the

former meeting . The ceremony was spledidly performed , and Bro . Weigel was congratulated on having such an excellent Installing Master . Bro . Garrard was also highly complimented on his performance . The following brethren received collars : Bros . H . Garrard , I . P . M . ; M . Seizenberg , S . W . ; the Rev . S . J . Roco , J . W . ; J . J . Lyon , Treas . ; Lewis Lazarus , P . M ., Sec ; J . Davy , S . D .

H . S . Onken , ) . D . ; M . B . Rosenberg , l . G . ; Whyl and Bahr , Stewards ; and Gaskell , P . M ., Tyler . On the motion of Bro . Henry Lazarus , P . M ., seconded by Bro . Lyon , Treas ., a cordial vote of thanks to Bro . Garrard was unanimously passed , in recognition of the brilliant style in which he had installed Bro . Weigel . The brethren then closed the lodge , and punctually to

the appointed time sat down to a choice banquet in the Crown Room . Dinner over , the usual toasts were proposed , and the speeches were interspersed with some grand vocal music b y Miss Eva Weigel , Mr . Baron Elkan , Miss Marie Alexander , Mr . Baron Cohen , and Miss Ida Weigel , a humorous sketch b y Mr . Jack Hassan , delightful violin solos by Master Maurice Alexander ( grandson of a very old

P . M ., Bro . L . Alexander ) , a well executed recitation by Miss Eva Weigel , "Queen Catherine ' s Defence before Henry VIII . and Cardinal Wolsey , " and talented accompaniments by Miss Ida Weigel and Miss Maud Alexander . The W . M . having proposed the introductory toasts , Bro . H . Garrard , I . P . M ., proposed "The Worshipful Master , " who he said , though as yet untried in the chair , had from

the admirable manner in which he had performed the duties of S . and J . W . given them ample guarantee that his conduct as VV . M . would add lustre to the Lodge of Joppa and to the high reputation the lodge had ever enjoyed . The brethren wished him a happy and prosperous year of office , and every brother would be glad to co-operate with him in attaining that goal . His year of office would be

memorable in the annals of the lodge . Bro . B . Weigel , W . M ., in responding , said he was usually of a very contradictory character , but in this instance he was not going to contradict Bro . Garrard . He liked being flattered . Whether it be right or wrong he took it upon himself to say he did not aspire to the honour of sitting in the chair of K . S . without taking a great deal of trouble . He was able to do a certain amount oi

work to please the bre hren , and if the brethren would try and give him some work he should only be too pleased to do it . lt was by their vote he was put in the chair , or he should not have reached it , and he consequently asked them to do their utmost to enable him to support that position—let them respect him and not do as some did in lodges to create want of harmony , but create harmony .

It was not enough that they should listen when something was spoken from the chair by the W . M . or the I . P . M ., but that they should try and make the evening pleasant and comfortable . For the present evening he hoped they would also respect those volunteers who had come forward with their musical and ether talents to make the evening joyful . Bro . Weigel , in proposing "The Joppa Benevolent Fund , " said that the Fund , which was now an old one , had

done a great deal of good . Bro . L . Lazarus , P . M ., before replying to the toast read a good list of subscriptions and donations to the fund . He proceeded to say that the establishment of the fund had been the means of other lodges having benvolent funds attached to them . When the Joppa Benevolent Fund was started it was for the purpose of taking the strain off the Fund of Benevolence of United Grand Lodge , and it had been successful in doing so . It was a fund to be proud of , for

Craft Masonry.

if a member of the lodge asked assistance of it he got it , and the general body of the lodge did not know it , and he could sit down in the lodge , and at the banquet hall on an equality with the other brethren . The fund was established for doing good quietly and secretly . A Committee with a president and vice-president were appointed to see to the distribution of the fund , and they were implicitly

trusted . This was real , true Masonic faith . * He congratulated the lodge on having such a Fund . At times there had been £ 1 , 400 in the fund , at other times not half that amount . The Committee voted out £ 50 ^ 10 , and even went up to £ 106 . Fortunately the last year had been without a single application to the fund . Bro . B . Weigel , VV . M ., next gave "The I . P . M ., Bro .

H . Garrard , " and presented Bro . Garrard with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel . He passed a high compliment on Bro . Garrard for the way in which he had done his work , and told the brethren that such ability could only be acquired by hard work and study . He had belonged to the lodge many years , and he could say that better work and better occupation of the Master's chair was never handed down

than by Bro . Garrard . Bro . H . Garrard , I . P . M ., in acknowledging the toast and the gift , said he had honestly tried to deserve the jewel . He was not one of those Masters who said on going out of the chair that they were glad their year of office was over , for he felt it rather difficult , to use an Americanism , to come off his perch , he had enjoyed himself so much . He

had had a very jolly year , and he thanked tha brethren one and all . With regard to the duties of I . P . M ., he considered they did not begin and end with proposing the toast of the W . M ., but that they were as important as those of any officer in the lodge , and for that reason that the I . P . M . must perform them in an unobtrusive and unobservant manner , so that he is neither seen nor heard . He could

assure the W . M . that he would most loyally serve him . Bro . A . G . Dodson , P . M ., responded to the toast of " The Past Masters , " and these brethren , he said , after they had once learned their duties when they were in the chair , were always ready to render any assistance that was required . He was happy to say that that year again the W . M . would

not require assistance , but if he did the Past Masters could give him the cue to the honour of the old Joppa Lodge . Bro . Dancyger replied to the toast of " The Visitors , " and Bros . Seizenberg and Roco to that of "The Officers . " Bro . Gaskell gave the Tyler ' s toast , which closed the proceedings .

Braham , I . P . M ., into the chairin an impressive manner . The following officers were appointed and invested : Bros . C F . Williams , S . W . ; E . Horton , J . W . ; F . Dunn , P . M ., Treas . ; A . Darch , P . M ., Sec . ; E . Weekley , S . D . ; W . Smith , J . D . ; T . H . Fairhead , I . G . ; I . VV .

Joppa Lodge ( No . 188 ) . —The installation meeting of this centenary lodge was held on the ist ins :., at Freemasons' Tavern , under the presidency of Bro . H . Garrard , W . M . The worshipful brother was supported by a good attendance of brethren , among whom were Bros . Barnett Weigel , S . W . ; M . Seizenberg , J . W . ; A . G . Dodson , P . M . ; H . Lazarus , P . M . ; VV . J . Gardner , P . M . ;

A . Cohen , P . M . ; J . Bolibol , P . M . ; Lewis Wall , P . M . ; L . Lazarus , P . M ., Sec ; J . | . Lyon , Treas . ; Rev . S . J . Roco , S . D . ; E . Davy , J . D . ; H . S . Onken , I . Biron , 'S 5 ; John Sharpe , 2021 ,- S . Dancyger , P . M . 205 ; John

Barnett , 177 ; John VV . Virgoe , 700 ; S . C . Kaufman , I . P . M . 1766 ; and Vincent Larner , P . M . 177 . The VV . M . passed Bro .
