THE FIRST ANNUAL DINNER OF THE UBIQUE LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1789 .
The first annualldinner of the above lodge was held at its head-quarters , the Crown and Anchor , 79 , Ebury-street , S . W ., on Friday , the 27 th ult ., Capt . Butterworth , Scots Guards , in the chair . The members mustered in full force , and did ample justice to an excellent dinner provided by the worthy hostess ,, the dessert being kindly provided by Bro . Swingler . After the usual loyal toasts had been duly honoured , the Chairman rose to propose the toast of the evening , which was " The Health of our much esteemed and talented Preceptor , Bro . George Boulton , P . M ., P . Z . 1604 , " In giving it , he said it afforded him the utmost pleasure to do
so , and after referring in eulogistic terms to the excellent services rendered to the lodge by that popular brother , presented him , in the name of the lodge , with a magnificent gold watch and chain as a slight mark of their esteem for him . It gave him all the more pleasure to doso , as . having had the pleasure of that brother ' s acquaintance for a quarter of a century , he knew his sterling worth , not only as a man ,
but as a Mason ; his courteous manner and readiness at all times to give every assistance and advice to those brethren seeking it , great many of whom owed their present state of efficiency to his careful teaching ; and he concluded by trusting that he would be long spared to wear it . Bro . BOULTON * , in rising to respond , was greeted with a round of applause . He referred to the very kindly way in
which the lodge had always received him . He said the present occasion had taken him by surprise ; he was sure he was not deserving of such a substantial mark of their favour , ( Cries of " Yes . " ) He had simply done his duty in endeavouring , through every means in his power , to further the
interests of the lodge . He thanked the brethren heartily for this kind mark of appreciation of his humble services , and he would cherish it as long as he lived . The brethren gave " For he ' s a jolly good fellow . " " The Health of the Chairman " was then proposed and drunk .
Capt . BUTTERWORTH , in rising to respond , said he felt it an honour to preside over the meeting that evening , seeing so many old and familiar faces . He had just returned from the Soudan , where he was surprised to hear on all sides the kindly expressions of opinion and enquiries after his and Brc . Folson's health . He could assure them that those feelings were highly appreciated . It was a great source of
comfort for one to know that when fighting the battles of his country he was not forgotten at home , and especially amongst his brother Masons . He felt sure that where such feelings existed a country was bound to conquer . Several other toasts followed , amongst which were "The Secretary , Bro . Coughlan , P . M ., " and "The Treasurer , Bro . Gibson , P . M ., " which were suitably responded to by
those brethren . The toast of "The Mother Lodge" was responded to by Bro . MASON , S . W . Some excellent singing was indulged in , there being a goodly display of talent present , and the evening was brought to a close with " Auld Iang syne " ( Bro . Coughlan ) , the brethren dispersing shortly before midnight , having spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening .
