" The Health of the M . E . Z . " As the M . E . Z . had remarked in the chapter he ( the I . P . Z . ) was his sponsor in Masonry , and was therefore pleased to install him into the chair that evening . Without further preface he would ask the companions to drink the toast . Comp . Frederick Kedge , M . E . Z ., said he had in the first instance to thank the I . P . Z . for so kindly proposing the
toast and the companions for receiving it so cordially . He feared he owed his position somewhat more particularly to the good will of the companions rather than to any particular ability he had shown in the ceremonies of this Degree . He could not hope to give them the same treat in the working they had previously enjoyed , but he should endeavour to do his best and hoped he should to some extent meet with the
approbation of the companions . He thanked them very much for placing him in that position and could assure them that anything he was able to do he would do to the best of his ability and power . "The Exaltees " was cordially honoured , after which the M . E . Z . gave "The Visitors , " and offered them a hearty welcome .
Comp . Garrod , P . A . G . D . C , in response , said he visited the chapter that evening with a great deal of pleasure to witness the installation ot Comp . Kedge , whom he had known for someyears , and who was an initiate of a lodge with which he was associated . He was very pleased to hear that ceremony rendered by Comp . Coltart , I . P . M ., in a manner he had never heard excelled . He thought it would be so
as the I . P . Z . was an old member of a chapter to which he belonged . The Covent Garden Chapter was a young one , but the assembly that evening showed it was appreciated . Comp . G . R . Langley , P . Z ., tendered sincere thanks for the cordial reception given the visitors . He also tendered personal thanks for three reasons . First of all that he was able to meet at their chapter so many of his own personal
friends ; secondl y that they had permitted him from time to time to try his prentice hand in the ceremonies , and thirdly for the great kindness shown by the M . E . Z . in calling upon Comp . Jackson to respond , for he knew that companion was most anxious to do so . Comps . Wilson and Jackson also replied . The M . E . Z . next gave "The Past Principals , " and
said a more excellent M . E . Z . than Comp . Hewett could not be found , and the companions would have a very keen recollection of the manner in which he performed his duties during the first year's existence of the Chapter . He was followed by Comp . Coltart , I . P . Z ., whose worth was most favourably impressed upon their minds , and the companions could therefore congratulate themselves on
having had two good First Principals . Comps . Hewett , P . Z . ; and Coltart , I . P . Z ,, expressed their thanks , and assured the companions of their continued interest in the chapter . In proposing "The H . and J ., " the M . E . Z . regretted the absence of the H . elect , from whom , he was sure , he should receive the fullest assistance . Comp . Hancock , J ., was a most excellent officer , and one whose work would not
onl y be done satisfactorily , but with great credit to himself . Comp . W . Hancock , J ., returned thanks , and the M . E . Z . afterwards gave " The Officers . " Comp . C O . Burgess , Treas ., said the finances of the chapter were in a particularly sound condition , and they had to thank the S . E . for his great care , and for the manner in which he had kept the books . As a founder of the chapter
he was very pleased to see Comp . Kedge as M . E . Z ., for that companion was a P . M . of his mother lodge . He had always been associated with Comp . Kedge in Masonry , and he regarded him as one of the leading lights . He was also pleased to see present Comp . Langley , who was a P . Z . of another chapter to which he belonged . Comp . George Reynolds , S . E ., said he did not know
what he had to say after the splendid speech of his old friend , Comp . Burgess , who assisted him in keeping their funds . It was a great pleasure to feel they had had a successful evening , and had exalted two brethren who would be a great assistance to them . They had Comp . Carter who was a member of the Covent Garden Lodge , and also a brother from the Anglo-American Lodge
Comp . G . S . Sherwin . The chapter wasgoing on well , and he was glad to hear the Auditors and Past Principals were pleased with the manner in which the books were kept . The Janitor ' s toast concluded the proceedings . A programme of music was given under the direction of Comp . W . J . Thrussell , assisted by Messrs . Rene Payne , Clarke , Thompson , and McCall Chambers .

" Hearty good wishes " were accorded , and the chapter was closed . After the banquet the usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts
were honoured . The I . P . Z ., in proposing the toast of "The M . E . Z ., Comp . Bailey , " said they might congratulate themselveson having so excellent a companion to preside over them , as under his care the chapter would continue to prosper . 1 hey were aware that he was thoroughly master of all that he
would have to do , and he ( the I . P . Z . ) would bring those candidates that , owing to circumstances over which he had no control , he hoped to have brought during his own year of office . would do his very best to deserve a continuance and cement that perfect feeling of love and harmony that existed among them . He could not hope to excel those who had preceded him but would endeavour to equal them . The toasts of "The I . P . Z ., " "TheP . compliments to both , remarking that he owed to Comp . Dehane much of the knowledge he possessed , having been grounded some years ago by Comp . see the companions come and perfect themselves ready for the office they might be called upon to fulfil . "The P . S ., " "The Officers , " and Janitor's toasts followed . A Caution.
A CAUTION .
The following letter appeared in our issue of the 30 th April , and as the objectionable brother is still on the war-path , and had the audacity to call at the Grand Secretary ' s office for relief , we think it desirable to reprint the letter , and again put our readers on their
guard . It is needless to say that , when confronted with a cutting from our pages , which had been judiciously placed among the archives of Grand Lodge , he executed astrategicmovementtowards thedoor , andincontinently disappeared : " Dear Sir and Brother .
"A brother Mason , giving his name as S . Mason , Naphtali Lodge , No . 266 , has lately app lied to me for relief . His manner was both insolent and objectionable . I wrote to his lodge for information of him , and learn that he was in the lodge about 12 months , and that is some 16 or 17 years ago , and they under
have not seen him since , but they are given to - stand that he goes about from place to p lace living and sponging on his brethren . " I write to you to make this case known , and to say that this kind of professional mendicancy is becoming too painfully frequent , and is disgusting a
good many charitably-disposed brethren , as well as bringing the Order into contempt—I remain yours fraternally , " THOMAS DAY , " Almoner for the Derby Lodge . " Masonic Hall , Gower-street , Derby , " April 23 rd , 1892 . "

A Caution.
