Bro . H . Packham , I . P . M ., next proposed "The W . M . " He said it had given him great pleasure to see Bro . A . J . Carpenter rise step by step till he had reached the Master's chair . He had been a member of the lodge for 12 years , and his ambition had been to reach the W . M . 's chair . He had worked up the ladder step by step ; he had studied the work , and had been especially interested in the Charities—the foundation of Masonry . He was gratified
to find that the lodge had unanimously given him their confidence , and he hoped that confidence would not be misp laced . He would do all he could to maintain the dignity and prestige of the lodge , his one desire being that the lodge should continue to flourish . Bro . W . Gill , P . by the presence of the D . P . G . M . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , in acknowledging the greeting , said it always gave him intense pleasure to be amongst his brethren , but particularly those of his native town ; and one of the greatest comforts to him during the recent anxious time—he might say agonising time—he had passed through had been the great sympathy that had been shown to him by the Masonic

Sympathy had been extended to him from all quarters of the globe , but he had been , perhaps , most deepl y touched by the earnest and spontaneous kindness that had been evinced by the brethren of the mystic tie . At the close of the lodge between 50 and 60 brethren dined together at the Cups Hotel , the repast being thoroughl y well served by the host and hostess , Sir . and

to which he averred the great strides which Masonry was making was due . They were a Society which was based upon a foundation as broad as the wants of human kind , and as extensive as the longings of the human heart . He again alluded with the greatest gratitude to the sympathy he had received from the Brotherhood throughout the length and breadth of the land in connection with the recent
outrage upon his daughter , and paid a touching tribute to the medical skill of their brother from the Antipodes—Bro . Woinarski—who happened to be present at the time . It was to that skill , under providence , he owed the preservation of his daugter ' s life , and he was happy to think that she was making good progress towards recovery . With
regard to Masonry in Essex , he asserted that it had increased with leaps and bounds , for he remembered that while they had now in the province 32 lodges , in the time of Lord Tenterden , under whom he served , there were only 19 or 20 . In conclusion , the D . P . G . M . spoke in high terms of the manner in which the l . P . M . had performed the installation
ceremony . Bro . Salter also responded . Bro . Jones , I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The Worshipful Master , " remarked that Bro . Francis succeeded to the chair under the most favourable auspices . He was to be congratulated upon the presence of the D . P . G . M ., also upon the large and distinguished gathering , and last ,
but not least , on the prospect of the work which the notices had already given him . The Worshipful Master , in response , said he could not tell the brethren of the Angel Lodge and of other lodges in the province how he deemed it a red-letter day in his life to be called upon to fill the position in that chair . He expressed the hope that he would have a successful year of
office , and which would prove enjoyable to the members of the lodge . "The Health of the Installing Master" was given by the W . M ., who amidst the heartiest applause referred to the able way in which the l . P . M . had performed the ceremony of that day . Bro . F . C . H . Jones , in acknowledging the toast , said he felt that the installation ot a W . M . by his predecessor was
a fitting conclusion to the latter ' s year of office , and he was pleased to have been the medium of placing the present W . M . in the chair , as they had worked side by side for several years . The other toasts were " The Visitors , " " The Masonic Charities , " " The Past Masters , " " The Wardens and other Officers , " and the Tyler's toast . Replying for the officers , Bro . Capt . Naylor Leyland intimated his desire to present a Worshipful Master's chair
to the lodge . During the dinner a string band played soft selections of music , and subsequently glees , part songs , and solos enhanced considerably the enjoyment of the brethren . On pinning the jewel on his breast ( on which were engraved the arms of the Prov Grand Master , the Duke of
Devonshire ) , Bro . Wright expressed a hope that he would live long to wear it , and when he looked upon the jewel in years to come it would remind him of the happy hours he spent , as first W . M ., in building up the lodge . The VV . M ., in reply , stated that this presentation came upon him as a great surprise . He had no idea of anything of the kind . He eulogised the services of Bro . Tempest ,
S . W . ; and Bro . Heny , J . W ., who had worked even with more zeal than himself in founding the lodge . Grand Master had appointed Bro . the Right Hon . Lord George Hamilton , P . G . W ., to succeed their late chief .
