THE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT OF THE ROYAL MASONIC B ENEVOLENT INSTITUTION will hold their regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday next , the 9 th instant , at 4 p . m . MB . J . E . H . SAWYER ,. the elder son of Bro . Sir James Sawyer , Prov . S . G . W . of Warwickshire , and Lady Sawyer , attained his maiority about the beginning of last month , and the event was celebrated with unusual eclat at Haseley Hall , the residence of his parents . The festivities included a ball and At Home , and in both cases there

was a large number of guests , the meetings being in every way successful . Moreover , as Bro . Sir James Sawyer has played a leading part in Warwickshire Freemasonry for some years past , a deputation of his brethren waited upon Sir James , by whom they were entertained at luncheon , and afterwards presented their host ' s son with a memorial of the day . The deputation included Bro . C . T . Holder , W . M . Lodge of Charity , No . 1551 ; Bro . J . A . Dexter , P . M . 1551 , W . M . Charity Mark Lodge , No . 430 ; Bro . R . B . Morgan , P . M . 925 W . C . N . Charity Lodge Royal Ark Mariners , No . 115 ; Bro . F .

, E . Walter , W . M . elect 1551 ; Bro . Thomas Rowbotham , P . M . 1551 , Prov . J . G . W . Warwickshire ; and Bro . E . Mallard , P . P . J . G . W . ( Mark ) Warwickshire . Bro . Mallard made the presentation , which consisted of massive gold sleeve links in morocco case , and in doing so offered the congratulations of the brethren to Mr . Sawyer , and expressed the hope that one day they might have , the opportunity of welcoming him as a member of their Society , while in acknowledging the gift , Mr . Sawyer expressed his

desire to be made a Mason at as early a date as possible . Among other gifts that were presented were a handsome silver match box by certain of the parishioners , a pair of hair brushes with silver backs by the rector , from the Haseley parishoners , a silver mounted umbrella from the servants at Haseley Hall , all of which were gracefully acknowledged . Bro . Sir James Sawyer also , on behalf of Lady Sawyer and himself , returned thanks for the kindness shown to his son , and to his wife and himself in connection with this event .

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE has very kindly consented to preside at a banquet which will be held at the Star and Garter Hotel , Richmond , on the iSth November , on behalf of the building fund of the Richftiond Royal Hospital . THE VICTORIOUS , the second of the four new battleships built in Chatham Dockyard will be launched on Saturday , the 19 th instant , when the ceremony of christening the ship will be performed by Mrs . Goschen , wife of the First Lord of the Admiralty .

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE , as Colonel of the Royal Artillery , has awarded a sum of £ 172 to be distributed in prizes for skill at arms among the non-commissioned officers and men of the corps stationed at Gibraltar , Malta , Ceylon , and Bermuda .

THE ANCIENT GRAMMAR SCHOOL founded at Sandwich by letters patent granted by Oueen Elizabeth in 15 GG , and endowed by Sir Roger Manwood and Thomas Manwood , hasTieen revived , the ceremony in connection with the event being performed by the Mayor . THE EARL OF ROSEBERY has forwarded a cheque for „ ioo to the Royal Naval Sailors' Home , near Queensferry , N . B ., in celebration of Sir Visto's victory in the St . Leger . His lordship had previously given £ 50 to the Doncaster Infirmary in celebration of the same victory .

PRINCE AND PRINCESS HENRY OF BATTENBERG have returned from Germany , whither they had gone for the purpose of attending the funeral of the Prince's mother , to London . On their arrival they went to Buckingham Palace , and have since rejoined the Queen at Balmoral . THE LORD CHANCELLOR ( Bro . Lord Halsbury ) will receive the Lord Mayor elect ( Bro . Alderman Sir Walter Wilkin ) at the House of Lords on Thursday , the 24 th inst .,

and will communicate to him her Majesty s approval of his appointment to be the Chief Magistrate of the City of London . THE QUEEN has been p leased to approve of the appointment of Lord Lamington as Governor of Queensland in succession to General Sir Wylie Norman , whose term of office is on the eve of expiring . His lordship acted as one of the Marquis of Salisbury's Assistant Secretaries during the present Prime Minister ' s first premiership .

THE 2 ND BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT held their annual sports on Rushmoor Green on Monday , there being a large and fashionable company present , who were entertained by Lieut .-Col . W- H . Young and the officers of the battalion . The band of the 1 st Royal Scots Fusilers was in attendance , and played a charming selection of music during the afternoon . BRO . LORD WOLSELEY , Commander-in-Chief , left Kingston on Monday morning , b y mail boat for Holyhead . His lordship was accompanied by his private secretary and Col . Dundas , Assistant Adjutant General . On Tuesday Bro . Lord Roberts arrived in Dublin , and took over the command of the Forces in Ireland . His lordship crossed over from Scotland , where he had been taking a holiday .

THE RED DEER intended for sport before the Queen ' s Buckhounds were captured on Saturday in Windsor Park in anticipation of tbe opening of the October hunting season . After much horn-blowing and slashing of whips , about 50 stags and hinds were driven into the Cranbourne enclosure , and from thence some of the finest animals were separated and netted , and afterwards conveyed in the Royal van and farm carts to the Swinley paddocks .

THE INFANT DAUGHTER of Captain and Mrs . Dundas was baptised in Dalkeith Palace Chapel on Sunday last . The Duchess of York , as godmother , was represented by the Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos , the other sponsors being Lady Nina Balfour and Mr . Dundas , of Arniston . The child received the name of Victoria May Evelyn . Amcngthe congregation were Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton , Lady Elibank , and the Hon . Evie Murray .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES intended to have returned to England from his recent visit to the King and Queen of Denmark on board the Royal yacht Osborne , and went on board that Vessel on the night of Friday , the 27 th ultimo , but , owing to the presence of fog , his Royal Highness landed again next morning , and travelled via Korsoer and Vamdrut by special train to Hamburg . He reached Charing Cross on Sunday evening last .

M . PASTEUR , the eminent French savant , whose discoveries of a mode of treating successfully the terrible disease of hydrophobia , died at his house in the environs ot Paris eai ly on Sunday morning in the presence of his wife , his daughter and her husband , and the physicians in attendance . His son , who is Secretary to the French Embassy in Madrid , had been summoned by telegraph , but arrived too late to see his father before death . M . Pasteur was born in lhe little town of Dole on the 27 th December , 1 S 22 , and was , therefore , not far short of 73 years of age .

THE SHERIFFS ELECT , Mr . Alderman Pound and Bro . John Cooper , were inducted into office at a Common Hall held in the Guildhall on Saturday last , and afterwards celebrated the event with a breakfast in Leathersellers' Hall , at which there were present among the guests Bro . Alderman Sir J . Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., Bro . Alderman Sir J . C . Dimsdale , Bro . Aldeiman Vaughan Morgan , Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., Bro . ex-Sheriff George Hand , and the Under Sheriffs . The speeches throughout were biief , that relating to the Sheriffs being enthusiastically received .

BRO . J . L . TOOLE bade farewell to the London public in his character of lessee of the little theatre that bears his name on Saturday night last . His lease expired that day and as he explained in his speech after the performance , having built the theatre 14 years ago at considerable expense , he did not care to incur the further expense which the alterations required of him would entail . He was , therefore , going on tour for a few months and purposed visiting Newcastle , Glasgow , Edinburgh , Liverpool , Manchester , Dublin , Cork , Belfast , and other cities . Bro . Toole was most enthusiastically cheered both before and after his speech .

THE NORTH LONDON CHATTER of I MPROVEMENT will resume their . meetings at the Cock Tavern , Highbury , on Monday , the 7 th inst ., at S o ' clock . WE BEG TO STATE that the Langton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1673 , will resume its meetings at the White Hart , Abchurch-lane , E . G ., on Thursday next , when the ceremony of passing will be rehearsed . THE ROYAL SAVOY MARK LODGE OF INSTRUCTION will hold their first meeting aj their new quarters , the Railway Hotel , Highbury-corner , on the Gth inst ., at S o ' clock . THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masins for West Lancashire will be held in the Town Hall , Southport , on Saturday , the igth inst ., at 2 . 30 for 3 p . m . The banquet which follows will be held at the Prince of Wales Hotel , Lord-street , at 4 . 30 p . m .

Alliston , one of the members of Bread-street Ward on the Court of Common Council has been invited to accept the Aldermanic gown rendered vacant by the translation of Alderman Sir William Lawrence to the Ward or Bride Without , vice Sir Andrew Lusk , resigned . A MEETING OF THE COURT OF GOVERNORS of the West Lancashire Educational Institution will be held at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , this ( Friday ) evening , at 7 p . m ., for the election of children on the several branches of the Fund as well as of the officers for the ensuing year , _ c , & c .

THE WINTER SESSION at the various Medical Schools was inaugurated on Tuesday , the 1 st inst ., with the customary addresses by eminent members of the medical profession , and on Wednesday Sir Edwin Arnold , K . C . I . E ., distributed the prizes to the successful students at St . Thomas ' s Hospital , and afterwards delivered an address . THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Provincial Grand Lodgeof Northumberland will be held in the Grand Assembly Rooms , Newcastle , on the 30 th instant . The Provincial Grand Lodge will be opened by the Prov . G . M ., Bro . the Right Hon . Sir M . VV . Ridley , Bart ., M . P . Toe consecration of three new lodges will take place at the said msetin *—The Temperance , the Delaval , and the Holmes .

THE ROYAL SOVEREIGN and Resolution , constituting the Portsmouth division of the Channel Squadron , arrived at Spithead on Sunday last , and went into harbour the next day in order to give the men leave . A little time hence the Squadron will _ go on a short cruise , returning in December , when the Majestic will relieve the Royal Sovereign as flagship , and the Magnificent take the place of the Empress of India as second flagship .

A FAREWELL DINNER was given on Monday night by his Highness the Khedive to General Sir F . Walker on his retirement from the command of the British troops in Egypt , among the guests present being Lord Cromer , the Ministers , Sir H . H . Kitchener , Sirdar of the Egyptian army , and the principal British and Egyptian officers , Bro . Sir F . Walker , who started for England the day following , will be succeeded in the command by Maior-General Knowles .

THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY held a soiree in the rooms of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours on Saturdiy evening last , when there was a large gathering of members and their friends . Bro . Sir H . Trueman Wood , the President of the Society , presided , and with the Vice-Presidents received the guests at the entrance to the main gallery . The exhibition on view was found to be of unusual excellence , and will remain open to the middle of next month .

STRATFORD-ON-AVON " MOP FAIR . "—The London and North-Western Railway Company announce that on Saturday , the 12 th instant , a cheap half-day excursion for Stratford-on-Avon and Shakespeare ' s country will leave Euston 12 . 30 noon , Chalk Farm 12 . 9 noon , Kilburn 12 . 15 noon , Chelsea it . 52 a . m ., West Brompton 11 . 50 a . m ., Kensington ( Addison-road ) 12 . 12 noon , Uxbridge-road 12 . 14 noon , Willesden Junction 12 . 40 noon , Clapham Junction 11 . 46 a . m ., and Battersea 11 . 49 a . m ., retuming from Stratford-on-Avon at 7 . 40 p . in . ACCORDING to the reports received from different parts of the country , good sport will be found in abundarce for those who devote themselves to pheasant shooting , the season for which commenced on Tuesday . In Yorkshire but few coverts will be disturbed during the present month , but there is good promise of sport generally and over the estates of , among others , Bro . the Marquess of Zetland ( Aske Hall ) , _ Bro . Lord Barnard ( Raby Hall ) , and the Earl of Yarborough ( Brocklesby Hall ) . In South Bucks , Bedfordshire , and North Hertfordshire there is also said 13 be an abundance of game .

EAST COAST ROUTE TO SCOTLAND . —The Great Northern , North-Eastern , and North British Railways have arranged to run a new accelerated sleeping saloon express on week-days and Sundays , leaving King ' s Cross at 11 . 30 p . m . and arriving in Edinburgh at 7 . 0 . a . m ., Perth S . 42 a . m . ( Sundays S . 23 ) , Glasgow 9 . 0 , Dundee S . iS , and Aberdeen 10 . 25 a - - Passengers for Glasgow will have time to breakfast in Edinburgh . The 10 . 0 p . m . express from King's Cross has been discontinued . It will thus be seen the East Coast Companies have mide excellent arrangements to caler for their numerous passengers to Scotland who may be unable to leave town until the close of the day .

HOUSEBREAKERS—not the nefarious fraternity that act as the bane of respectable citizens who leave their town residences to enjoy the air of the seaside , but the useful workmen who clear away old buildings to make room for new ones—have commenced the demolition of the once famous " Goose and Gridiron , " contiguous to St . Paul ' s-Churchyard . The place had been empty for some time . It was a house built shortly

after the Great Fire , and possessed an interesting history . While St . Paul ' s Cathedral was building , Sir Christopher Wren was Master of the Freemasons' Lodge which assembled there . Besides presenting it with three carved mahogany candlesticks , he handed over to its custody the trowel and mallet which he used in laying the foundationstone of the Cathedral in 1 G 75 . —Daily Telegraph .

THE FLOURISHING little port of Swanage was the scene of an interesting gathering on Thursday , the 2 Gth ult ., when the Bishop of Salisbury opened a Cottage Hospital which has recently been erected by the sons and daughters of the late Bro . George Burt , formerly Sheriff of London and Middlesex , and Past A . G . D . C . of Grand Lodge , to the memory of their father , who was born in Swanage and always took the deepest

interest in its welfare , and by the inhabitants of which he in his turn—as well as the late Mrs . Burt—was loved and respected . There was a very large gathering present at the ceremony , the Burt family being numerously represented , and Mr . J . Mowlem Burt , the eldest son of the late Bro . Burt , at the request of the Bishop , delivered a brief address , showing the purpose which the members of the family had had in view in founding the hospital .

A NEW MASONIC TEMPLE was on Tuesday last informally inaugurated in the commodious and recently enlarged premises of the Victoria Mansions Restaurant , Victoiia-street , Westminster . One of the rooms in the building has for many years being devoted to the work of the Craft , but the ambition of the present proprietor , Bro . T . Watt , has prompted him to provide accommodation of a much more elaborate and appropriate character . The new temple is a richly decorated chamber , 47 feet by 20

feet , lurnished and appointed with good taste in the orthodox manner . Ante-rooms are clcse at hand , and the suite is complete in itself , being quite separated from the rest of the building . Electricity is employed for illuminating purposes and the whole of the arrangements have been carefully designed to aid the efficient working ot lodges meeting at the Victoria Mansions . Immediately underneath the Masonic rooms is a banqueting hall capable of seating nearly 100 persons .

OLD MASONIANS . —A very interesting function of this Association ( composed entirely of boys who have been educated at our School ) was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Friday , the 27 th ult . The occasion was a presentation to Messrs . C . IL IJwins and K . A . B . Gough on their marriage , as a small token of lhe esteem by which they were held by the members . Mr . Uwins' present took the form of a clock , and Mr . Cough ' s a canteen containing S 2 pieces of cutlery , both being suitably inscribed Bro . R . H . Williams presided over the gathering . After a short programme of mus'Ci

the Chairman presented the testimonials , drawing the attention of those present to their valuable services , the former being Treasurer for bix years , and the latter joint Hon-Secretary to the Association for some time . 'The recipients then responded in a fe * chosen words , thanking the members for their handsome presents , and hoping to be able to take as active interest in the Association in the future as in the past . Another short programme of music , and then a vote of thanks to the Chairman , with the singing oi " God Save the Oucen , " brought the first and one of the most enjoyable evenings to i close .

THE RED DEER intended for sport before the Queen ' s Buckhounds were captured on Saturday in Windsor Park in anticipation of tbe opening of the October hunting season . After much horn-blowing and slashing of whips , about 50 stags and hinds were driven into the Cranbourne enclosure , and from thence some of the finest animals were separated and netted , and afterwards conveyed in the Royal van and farm carts to the Swinley paddocks .

THE INFANT DAUGHTER of Captain and Mrs . Dundas was baptised in Dalkeith Palace Chapel on Sunday last . The Duchess of York , as godmother , was represented by the Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos , the other sponsors being Lady Nina Balfour and Mr . Dundas , of Arniston . The child received the name of Victoria May Evelyn . Amcngthe congregation were Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton , Lady Elibank , and the Hon . Evie Murray .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES intended to have returned to England from his recent visit to the King and Queen of Denmark on board the Royal yacht Osborne , and went on board that Vessel on the night of Friday , the 27 th ultimo , but , owing to the presence of fog , his Royal Highness landed again next morning , and travelled via Korsoer and Vamdrut by special train to Hamburg . He reached Charing Cross on Sunday evening last .

M . PASTEUR , the eminent French savant , whose discoveries of a mode of treating successfully the terrible disease of hydrophobia , died at his house in the environs ot Paris eai ly on Sunday morning in the presence of his wife , his daughter and her husband , and the physicians in attendance . His son , who is Secretary to the French Embassy in Madrid , had been summoned by telegraph , but arrived too late to see his father before death . M . Pasteur was born in lhe little town of Dole on the 27 th December , 1 S 22 , and was , therefore , not far short of 73 years of age .

THE SHERIFFS ELECT , Mr . Alderman Pound and Bro . John Cooper , were inducted into office at a Common Hall held in the Guildhall on Saturday last , and afterwards celebrated the event with a breakfast in Leathersellers' Hall , at which there were present among the guests Bro . Alderman Sir J . Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., Bro . Alderman Sir J . C . Dimsdale , Bro . Aldeiman Vaughan Morgan , Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., Bro . ex-Sheriff George Hand , and the Under Sheriffs . The speeches throughout were biief , that relating to the Sheriffs being enthusiastically received .

BRO . J . L . TOOLE bade farewell to the London public in his character of lessee of the little theatre that bears his name on Saturday night last . His lease expired that day and as he explained in his speech after the performance , having built the theatre 14 years ago at considerable expense , he did not care to incur the further expense which the alterations required of him would entail . He was , therefore , going on tour for a few months and purposed visiting Newcastle , Glasgow , Edinburgh , Liverpool , Manchester , Dublin , Cork , Belfast , and other cities . Bro . Toole was most enthusiastically cheered both before and after his speech .

THE ROYAL SOVEREIGN and Resolution , constituting the Portsmouth division of the Channel Squadron , arrived at Spithead on Sunday last , and went into harbour the next day in order to give the men leave . A little time hence the Squadron will _ go on a short cruise , returning in December , when the Majestic will relieve the Royal Sovereign as flagship , and the Magnificent take the place of the Empress of India as second flagship .

A FAREWELL DINNER was given on Monday night by his Highness the Khedive to General Sir F . Walker on his retirement from the command of the British troops in Egypt , among the guests present being Lord Cromer , the Ministers , Sir H . H . Kitchener , Sirdar of the Egyptian army , and the principal British and Egyptian officers , Bro . Sir F . Walker , who started for England the day following , will be succeeded in the command by Maior-General Knowles .

THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY held a soiree in the rooms of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours on Saturdiy evening last , when there was a large gathering of members and their friends . Bro . Sir H . Trueman Wood , the President of the Society , presided , and with the Vice-Presidents received the guests at the entrance to the main gallery . The exhibition on view was found to be of unusual excellence , and will remain open to the middle of next month .

HOUSEBREAKERS—not the nefarious fraternity that act as the bane of respectable citizens who leave their town residences to enjoy the air of the seaside , but the useful workmen who clear away old buildings to make room for new ones—have commenced the demolition of the once famous " Goose and Gridiron , " contiguous to St . Paul ' s-Churchyard . The place had been empty for some time . It was a house built shortly

after the Great Fire , and possessed an interesting history . While St . Paul ' s Cathedral was building , Sir Christopher Wren was Master of the Freemasons' Lodge which assembled there . Besides presenting it with three carved mahogany candlesticks , he handed over to its custody the trowel and mallet which he used in laying the foundationstone of the Cathedral in 1 G 75 . —Daily Telegraph .

THE FLOURISHING little port of Swanage was the scene of an interesting gathering on Thursday , the 2 Gth ult ., when the Bishop of Salisbury opened a Cottage Hospital which has recently been erected by the sons and daughters of the late Bro . George Burt , formerly Sheriff of London and Middlesex , and Past A . G . D . C . of Grand Lodge , to the memory of their father , who was born in Swanage and always took the deepest

interest in its welfare , and by the inhabitants of which he in his turn—as well as the late Mrs . Burt—was loved and respected . There was a very large gathering present at the ceremony , the Burt family being numerously represented , and Mr . J . Mowlem Burt , the eldest son of the late Bro . Burt , at the request of the Bishop , delivered a brief address , showing the purpose which the members of the family had had in view in founding the hospital .

A NEW MASONIC TEMPLE was on Tuesday last informally inaugurated in the commodious and recently enlarged premises of the Victoria Mansions Restaurant , Victoiia-street , Westminster . One of the rooms in the building has for many years being devoted to the work of the Craft , but the ambition of the present proprietor , Bro . T . Watt , has prompted him to provide accommodation of a much more elaborate and appropriate character . The new temple is a richly decorated chamber , 47 feet by 20

feet , lurnished and appointed with good taste in the orthodox manner . Ante-rooms are clcse at hand , and the suite is complete in itself , being quite separated from the rest of the building . Electricity is employed for illuminating purposes and the whole of the arrangements have been carefully designed to aid the efficient working ot lodges meeting at the Victoria Mansions . Immediately underneath the Masonic rooms is a banqueting hall capable of seating nearly 100 persons .

OLD MASONIANS . —A very interesting function of this Association ( composed entirely of boys who have been educated at our School ) was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , on Friday , the 27 th ult . The occasion was a presentation to Messrs . C . IL IJwins and K . A . B . Gough on their marriage , as a small token of lhe esteem by which they were held by the members . Mr . Uwins' present took the form of a clock , and Mr . Cough ' s a canteen containing S 2 pieces of cutlery , both being suitably inscribed Bro . R . H . Williams presided over the gathering . After a short programme of mus'Ci

the Chairman presented the testimonials , drawing the attention of those present to their valuable services , the former being Treasurer for bix years , and the latter joint Hon-Secretary to the Association for some time . 'The recipients then responded in a fe * chosen words , thanking the members for their handsome presents , and hoping to be able to take as active interest in the Association in the future as in the past . Another short programme of music , and then a vote of thanks to the Chairman , with the singing oi " God Save the Oucen , " brought the first and one of the most enjoyable evenings to i close .
