The business of the convocation being concluded , the chapter was closed , and the companions afterwards sat down to an excellent supper provided by the officers , after which a very pleasant evening was spent . YORK . —York College . —On the 19 th ult . the regular quarterly meeting of this active college was held at the head-quarters of the province . The college was called for 3 p . m ., but according to previous arrangement the members met the Chief Adept , Era . T . B . Whytchcad , at noon , and under his guidance visited some of the places of interest in York , including the Merchants' Hall ,

with its subterranean chapel , the meeting place of the extinct Grand Lodge of All England and of the Apollo Lodge . Mounting the city walls at Wallingate Bar , the party traversed the ancient fortifications lo the Red Tower , and again from Lazetthorpe Postern to Monk Bar . Here the interior of the Bar was inspected , which is very interesting , being most perfect in all respects , the old portcullis hanging from the windlass , in the position in which it was for the first time elevated , whilst the view of the cathedral and

city from the leads on the roof was thoroughly enjoyed . Thence the party made their way to the Black Swan Hotel , where they partook of luncheon . At 3 p . m . the party assembled in the Freemasons' Hall , St . Saviourgate , York , which had been lent for the occasion by the Trustees of the Eboracum Lodge , 1611 . At the last meeting Fra . Major Moore had been elected Celebrant , but had not been installed owing to his absence

through ill-health . Fra . Tudor Trevor , the outgoing Celebrant , therefore took the chair , and was supported by Fratres Major Moore , VV . H . Cowper , J . M . Meek , Wm . Brown , Col . Moore , then read a most interesting paper on the Runic stone found during the restoration of Leeds Parish Church , in the course of which he explained

the various theories held by experts as to the interpretation of the symbols carved upon the stone . His address was illustrated by large drawings and plans , and a vote of thanks was accorded to him . It was arranged that Durham should be the next place of meeting of the college on Wednesday , August iStli , and Fra . Col . Monks undertook to make preliminary arrangements for viewing the Cathedral , and other places and

objects of interest in that ancient seat of learning . General satisfaction was expressed at the result of the resolution passed at the last meeting to issue a quarterly journal of the transactions of the college , and it was resolved to reprint the whole of the previous transactions of the college , to enable members to obtain a complete series . The Chief

Adept announced that he had made the following provincial appointments : Fras . Tudor Trevor , Suffragan ; Chas . Fendelow , Provincial Treasurer ; and W . H . Cowper , Provincial Secretary . The M . YORK . —York College . —On the 19 th ult . the regular quarterly meeting of this active college was held at the head-quarters of the province . The college was called for 3 p . m ., but according to previous arrangement the members met the Chief Adept , Era . T . B . Whytchcad , at noon , and under his guidance visited some of the places of interest in York , including the Merchants' Hall ,

with its subterranean chapel , the meeting place of the extinct Grand Lodge of All England and of the Apollo Lodge . Mounting the city walls at Wallingate Bar , the party traversed the ancient fortifications lo the Red Tower , and again from Lazetthorpe Postern to Monk Bar . Here the interior of the Bar was inspected , which is very interesting , being most perfect in all respects , the old portcullis hanging from the windlass , in the position in which it was for the first time elevated , whilst the view of the cathedral and

city from the leads on the roof was thoroughly enjoyed . Thence the party made their way to the Black Swan Hotel , where they partook of luncheon . At 3 p . m . the party assembled in the Freemasons' Hall , St . Saviourgate , York , which had been lent for the occasion by the Trustees of the Eboracum Lodge , 1611 . At the last meeting Fra . Major Moore had been elected Celebrant , but had not been installed owing to his absence

Moore , then read a most interesting paper on the Runic stone found during the restoration of Leeds Parish Church , in the course of which he explained

the various theories held by experts as to the interpretation of the symbols carved upon the stone . His address was illustrated by large drawings and plans , and a vote of thanks was accorded to him . It was arranged that Durham should be the next place of meeting of the college on Wednesday , August iStli , and Fra . Col . Monks undertook to make preliminary arrangements for viewing the Cathedral , and other places and

objects of interest in that ancient seat of learning . General satisfaction was expressed at the result of the resolution passed at the last meeting to issue a quarterly journal of the transactions of the college , and it was resolved to reprint the whole of the previous transactions of the college , to enable members to obtain a complete series .
