especially proficient in his Masonic knowledge , was duly raised tothe Sublime Degree of a M . M ., after which the genial and talented comedian received the warmest congratulations of his many professional and private brethren who had assembled on the interesting occasion . The work of both Degrees was performed in first-class style by the W . M ., who received valuable and willing assistance from

his efficient staff of officers . Substantial Charity was voted on behalf of a widow of another lodge . " Hearty good wishes " were conveyed to the W . M . from the representatives of about a dozen lodges , and the business proceedings were brought to a close . An excellent dinner was subsequently served by Bro . VV .

S . Vines , of the Canton Hotel , and a most enjoyable and unique entertainment , interspersed with two toasts ( given by the W . M . with the brevity and emphasis for which he is justly celebrated ) was afterwards furnished by Bros . Edward Terry , H . C Arnold , J . Clulow , Josef Cantor , S . Kirkham , E . Edwards , N . F . Burt , Eaton Batty , A . E . Workman , and W . Savage .

TONBRIDGE . —Medway Lodge ( No . 16 7 S ) . — The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Old Town Hall , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult . The chair was occupied by Bro . G . D . Warner , W . M ., who was supported by a large gathering of brethren and visitors from other lodges . After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed , Bros . Tyler and VVadmore

were passed to the Second Degree ; the W . M . in a most impressive way giving an explanation of the tracing board . The W . M . elect , Bro . C . H . Hogben , was then duly installed in the chair by the Installing Master , Bro . S . W . Shaw , who ably rendered the usual addresses . 'The W . M . then invested his officers as follows : Bro ^ i . Warner , I . P . M ., as a token of the brethren ' s esteem , and to commemorate his year of office . The W . M . in suitable language made the presentation , and spoke of Bro . Warner ' s earnest and zealous endeavours to promote the interests and prosperity of the lodge .

Bro . Warner feelingly thanked the brethren for their mark and appreciation of his services . After " Hearty good wishes " were tendered by the visiting brethren , the lodge was duly closed . The brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , provided at the Rose and Crown Hotel by Bro . T . Pawley . The W . M ., Bro . C . H . Hogben , presided , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to .

Axon , said he had a very pleasing duty to perform , which was to present him , in the name of the lodge , with a Past Master ' s gold jewel and a portrait , in acknowledgment of his services rendered to the lodge during his year of office . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester . Bro . Axon , in a few appropriate sentences , thanked the brethren for this kind testimony of their appreciation of his

services . After " Hearty good wishes " had been expressed by the numerous visiting brethren , the lodge was closed in peace and harmony . The festival of St . John was subsequently celebrated with a banquet , at the conclusion of which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and " The Health of theW . M ., " "I . P . Z . of the Order , " and after commenting on the excellent services rendered to Royal Arch and Craft Masonry , commanded the companions to give the toast the reception it so fully deserved , which after a right good fire , Comp . Roberts sung , assisted by the rest of the companions , " God bless

the Prince of Wales . "The Pro G . Z ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were duly acknowledged . Comp . T . T . Phillips then gave that of "The M . E . Z ., " in highly complimentary terms , and met with a hearty reception . The M . E . Z . returned thanks , and next proposed that of

"The H . and J ., " to which a hearty reception was given , and they returned thanks . Next followed that of "The P . Z . ' s of the Chapter , " Comps . Van Raalte and Phillips replying to the same . The M . E . Z . rising and proposing that of "The Treasurer , " remarked , the amount of obligation they were under to him , without whose services he feared they would

not have been in so successful a condition as they now were , he would leave it in the hands of the companions to let Comp . H . J . Lardner , their Treasurer , know how much they appreciated him , which , altera hearty reception , that worthy companion expressed his thanks , telling the companions it would not be his fault if the chapter was not a success , reminding them that they had also a duty to

perform by recommending thechapter to worthy brethren , for without a constant supply of exaltces no chapter could go on and prosper , so hoped with their united aid to make the West Smitlifield Chapter a continued success . The M . E . Z . next proposed "The Visitors . " Comp . Walters , P . Z ., father of the chapter , replied ,

complimenting the chapter on its prosperity , and the excellent working of the companions in office , stating that it was no more than he expected , knowing them to be firstclass workers in Craft Masonry , and begged to thank them for the welcome accorded him . The M . E . Z . next gave that of his " Officers , " paying them great compliment ,

especially proficient in his Masonic knowledge , was duly raised tothe Sublime Degree of a M . M ., after which the genial and talented comedian received the warmest congratulations of his many professional and private brethren who had assembled on the interesting occasion . The work of both Degrees was performed in first-class style by the W . M ., who received valuable and willing assistance from

his efficient staff of officers . Substantial Charity was voted on behalf of a widow of another lodge . " Hearty good wishes " were conveyed to the W . M . from the representatives of about a dozen lodges , and the business proceedings were brought to a close . An excellent dinner was subsequently served by Bro . VV .

S . Vines , of the Canton Hotel , and a most enjoyable and unique entertainment , interspersed with two toasts ( given by the W . M . with the brevity and emphasis for which he is justly celebrated ) was afterwards furnished by Bros . Edward Terry , H . C Arnold , J . Clulow , Josef Cantor , S . Kirkham , E . Edwards , N . F . TONBRIDGE . —Medway Lodge ( No . 16 7 S ) . — The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Old Town Hall , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult . The chair was occupied by Bro . G . D . Warner , W . M ., who was supported by a large gathering of brethren and visitors from other lodges . After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed , Bros . Tyler and VVadmore

were passed to the Second Degree ; the W . M . in a most impressive way giving an explanation of the tracing board . The W . M . elect , Bro . C . H . Hogben , was then duly installed in the chair by the Installing Master , Bro . S . W . Shaw , who ably rendered the usual addresses . 'The W . M . then invested his officers as follows : Bro ^ i . Warner ' s earnest and zealous endeavours to promote the interests and prosperity of the lodge .

Bro . Warner feelingly thanked the brethren for their mark and appreciation of his services . After " Hearty good wishes " were tendered by the visiting brethren , the lodge was duly closed . The brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , provided at the Rose and Crown Hotel by Bro . T . Pawley . The W . M ., Bro . C . H . WEST SMITHFIELD CHAPTER ( No . 1623 ) . —A convocation of this chapter was held on Thursday , the 27 II 1 ult ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street . The chapter was opened in due form by the M . E . Z ., Comp . W . C . Kent , assisted by Comps . H . Forss , H . ; E . Malletr , J . ; H . J . Lardner , P . Z ., Treasurer ; L . Lardner , S . E . ; R . F . Urickdale , P . S . ; F . E . Roberts , Org . ; T . T .

Phillips , I . P . Z . ; F . S . Van Raalte , P . Z . ; VV . Collier , J . J . Howes , J . VV . Jolly , and F . Walters , P . Z . The minutes of the last convocation were read and confirmed . The chapter was then closed , and the companions adjourned to an excellent banquet , prepared by Comp . Clemow , to the great satisfactionof the companions , after the repast , the M . E . Z . proposed the usual loyal and Royal

Arch toasts , to which the companions heartily responded . The M . E . Z . next gave that of " H . R . H . the G . Z . of the Order , " and after commenting on the excellent services rendered to Royal Arch and Craft Masonry , commanded the companions to give the toast the reception it so fully deserved , which after a right good fire , Comp . Roberts sung , assisted by the rest of the companions , " God bless

the Prince of Wales . "The Pro G . Z ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were duly acknowledged . Comp . T . T . Phillips then gave that of "The M . E . Z ., " in highly complimentary terms , and met with a hearty reception . The M . E . Z . returned thanks , and next proposed that of

"The H . and J ., " to which a hearty reception was given , and they returned thanks . Next followed that of "The P . Z . ' s of the Chapter , " Comps . Van Raalte and Phillips replying to the same . The M . E . Z . rising and proposing that of "The Treasurer , " remarked , the amount of obligation they were under to him , without whose services he feared they would

not have been in so successful a condition as they now were , he would leave it in the hands of the companions to let Comp . H . J . Lardner , their Treasurer , know how much they appreciated him , which , altera hearty reception , that worthy companion expressed his thanks , telling the companions it would not be his fault if the chapter was not a success , reminding them that they had also a duty to

perform by recommending thechapter to worthy brethren , for without a constant supply of exaltces no chapter could go on and prosper , so hoped with their united aid to make the West Smitlifield Chapter a continued success . The M . E . Z . next proposed "The Visitors . " Comp . Walters , P . Z ., father of the chapter , replied ,

complimenting the chapter on its prosperity , and the excellent working of the companions in office , stating that it was no more than he expected , knowing them to be firstclass workers in Craft Masonry , and begged to thank them for the welcome accorded him . The M . E . Z . next gave that of his " Officers , " paying them great compliment ,
