Masonic Notes .
The Masonic careers of most of the brethren appointed to Grand Chapter appeared last week in connection with their Craft appointment with the exception of Bro . J . S . Cumberland , Bro . Stiles ( elected Grand Treasurer ) , Bro . Col . Bentham , Bro . Gabriel Prior Goldney , and Bro . Minstrcll . The two latter
had previously been appointed to Grand Ollice , and their services were duly recorded in our pages at the time ; but Bros . Cumberland , Stiles , and Bentham , although long and honourably known as zealous Craftsmen , have not yet attained Grand Rank in the Craft . We shall hope to supply our readers with full particulars of their Masonic services in our next
issue . » * » On Wednesday next the 106 th Anniversary Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls will be held , as usual , at Freemasons' Tavern . Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Pro Grand Master , and Prov . Grand Master
of West Lancashire , will occupy the chair , and , as far as we can judge , will be supported by a Board of about 430 Stewards , and we can only reiterate the hope we expressed in our Notes of last week , that the sum
obtained by the exertions of his lordship and his supporters will be sufficient to meet the requirements of the School and maintain it at its present hi gh state of efficiency . » * *
The other part of the annual celebration , in which the girls themselves take so prominent a part—the distribution of prizes—will take place at the School itself . The central figure will be the Countess of Lathom , who has very kindly undertaken to present
the prizes to the successful pupils . The programme of music and recitations is of the usual character and there will be , as the chief feature of the day ' s proceedings , that marvellous display of calisthenics , which all who have witnessed it have so fully and so justly admired .
We trust the Clerk of the Weather will look with favour upon this annual gathering and , with a view to ensuring outdoor as well as indoor bri ghtness , will dispense as much as possible of his genial May sunshine . * * *
The voting papers for the annual elections of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution on Friday , ihe 18 th inst ., have been issued , and from these we gather that for the Male Fund there are 65 candidates and 22 vacancies , of which 19 are immediate and three
deferred ; and for the Widows' Fund 54 . candidates and 14 vacancies , of which 11 are immediate and three deferred . These figures , however , will be slightly altered by the day of election ; indeed , one or two of the can . didates have died since the papers were printed , and
there is no doubt that the number of vacancies will be increased , it being the rule with the Committee of Management to recommend that annuities which have become vacant since the lists were prepared in February shall be balloted for as well as those which had been previously declared . But under the most
favourable circumstances it will be impossible to elect more than about one-third of the candidates , unless , indeed the Committee should happen to consider themselves justified in creating a few additional annuities . But the hope that they will be able to do this is at best a very slight one .
As regards the candidates , there are , as we said , 65 on the Male Fund and 54 on the Widows' Fund . Of thc former , 34 have remained on the list from last year ' s election and 31 are new cases ; while of the latter 3 8 remain from last year and 16 are new cases . A few of the older candidates have been on the lists
