The lodge having been opened , Bros . J . Penrose and J . A . Grant were raised to the Third Degree by the W . M ., who also explained the tracing board and the tools . Bro . M . R . Wright , S . W ., was unanimously elected as W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . M . Corbitt , Treasurer . The Finance Committee was then elected , after which the W . M ., on behalf of the officers and several brethren of the lodge .

in a speech replete with good feeling , presented a gold Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . Wm . Brown , who has acted as l . P . M . for two years to the great satisfaction of the members . Bro . Brown , who was much surprised at this recognition of his valuable services , thanked the brethren for the charming gift , which he never anticipated or expected .

The lodge was afterwards closed , and the brethren adjourned to the refreshment room , where the remainder of the evening was spent in a very harmonious manner . The jewel , which was an excellent specimen of line art work , was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . It is about to years since a similar presentation was made in this lodge .

ROTHERHAM . Phoenix Lodge ( No . 904 ) . —The installation of Bro . J . France as W . M . of the above lodge took place on Thursday , the 25 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall . The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . I . Gibbs .

THORNHAM . Thomham Lodge ( No . 2279 ) . —On Wednesday , the 24 th ult ., the annual Festival of St . John in connection with the above lodge was held in the lodge room at the Half-way House . The usual loyal toasts were given by the Chairman , after which the toasts of "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . Albert Edward Prince of Wales , " "The M . W . Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were proposed and duly honoured . In proposing "The R . W . Prov . Grand Master of East

Lancashire , Bro . Col . Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bro . Dr . Young , P . M ., said the services rendered to the Masonic cause , and more especially to Masonry in East Lancashire , by Bro . Col . Starkie were well known to all Masons , and their appreciation of those services the brethren of the province had endeavoured to recognise by the handsome

presents which they had recently asked him to accept at their hands . Bro . Col . Starkie was always ready to extend his sympathy to the brethren of the Craft , and his services to Freemasonry were almost unexampled . The Thornham Lodge in particular was very much indebted to him . He had always been ready to assist them in all he could . They were also indebted to Bro . Hollingworth , a Provincial Grand

Officer , who had so ably assisted them that evening . In responding to the toast , Bro . Hollingworth said it was a pleasure to him to do as much good as he possibly could for the cause , and to g ive assistance to the various lodges in his district . He might seem a little peremptory in his manner sometimes—some might think too much so—but it was due to the great interest he took in all the duties of the

work . He did his best to do his own work in as complete a manner as it was possible for him to do , and he liked to see other brethren do the same . He could not forget that he had the honour of installingthefirst W . M . of the lodge , and he was very pleased to again be with them on the present occasion . With respect to the brother who had just vacated the chair . he knew him to be a most enthusiastic Mason who had

had his heart in his work during his yearof office , and he was very well sure from what he had seen of the newly-installed Master the latter would be very well able to discharge the duties of his office in a satisfactory manner . Bro . Harrison , l . P . M ., in proposing "The W . M ., Bro . j . VV . Riley , " said they all knew Bro . Riley to be ot a quiet and unassuming disposition , one who tried to discharge his

duties without making much noise , but he ( the speaker ) could assure them that the newly-installed Master was well qualified for the position . He hoped Bro . Riley would be able to bring the working of the lodge up to Bro . Hollingworth ' s high standard of efficiency . They had had some of the Provincial Grand Officers at the Thornham Lodge from time to time , who had complimented them on their

working . At the time he himself thought their encomiums might be mere flattery , but he had since ascertained that the opinions then expressed were sincere , and he was sure that Bro . Riley would try to improve even upon the standard of excellence already reached by his predecessors . The Worshipful Master , in responding , said he did not see how he could mend the work of his worthy brother who

had just vacated the chair , but he would do his best to go through the ceremonies of his office , so that they would pass off well . To do so he must have the able assistance of his officers . However well the Master of a lodge did his work , his success greatly depended upon his oflicers , and

he hoped the officers and brethren of the Thornham Lodge would endeavour to maintain that proficiency which had hitherto characterised them in the discharge of their duties . Bro . Meanock , S .
