Masonic Notes .
The annual festival of the Emulation Lodge of Improvement following so closely at the heels of the Jubilee of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution made last week an exceptionally heavy one . However , the latter event lost nothing by the glory in which the earlier was surrounded , and though very general regret was felt on the enforced absence through illness of
Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , P . G . M . Somersetshire , who had kindly undertaken to preside , a most able substitute was found in Bro . Sir J . Monckton , P . G . W ., who is ready at all times and in all circumstances to answer a sudden call to duty . As for the Festival itself , it was as successful as in precedtngyears , and those who had the privilege of witnessing the labour which preceded refreshment , were delighted with what they saw and heard .
We learn with much pleasure that the vacancy in the Supreme Council , 33 , caused by the lamented death of Col . Shadwell Clerke is to be filled b y the appointment of Bro . Lord Euston . # * *
It is intended to erect a memorial porch at the Church of St . Mary-on-the-Hill , Chester , to Randle Holme , the distinguished historian and Freemason of the 17 th century , who is buried in the church . An influential meeting of Freemasons was held at the
Town Hall , Chester , on Saturday , the 13 th ult ., Bro . Sir Horatio Lloyd , D . P . G . M ., in the chair , the Prov . Grand Master , Lord Egerton of Tatton , being represented by Bro . R . Newhouse , Prov . Grand Secretary who announced that the Chairman had communicated
with Lord Egerton , and that he had suggested Easter Monday , April 18 th , as a fitting and convenient day to lay the corner-stone of the church porch , and his lordship had replied , announcing his intention to be present on the occasion , and lay the stone with Masonic ceremonial .
It is purposed to hold the Provincial Grand Lodge in the Castle ( close to the church ) , walk in procession to the church , hold a short service , and then perform the ceremony , all Masons in the Province being invited to attend .
Among the great and varied services to Freemasonry of our distinguished Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., none have been more arduous than the years devoted to the interests of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cornwall during his residence in that province , when ,
in the intervals of his cosmopjlitan Masonic work , he found time to perform the duties of Provincial Grand Secretary , in addition to managing for over 10 years the Charity organisation of the province in connection with the Central Institutions .
Bro . Hughan s appointment as Senior Grand Warden and the presentation of a valuable testimonial on his leaving showed that the brethren of the province were grateful for the help he had given them , and it will be gratifying to Cornishmen especially , and to his
worldwide circle of friends generally , to knoiv that after the lapse of several years the memory of his good deeds remains fresh . This was shown at the recent meeting of the Cornish Lodge in London when the motion to elect Bro . Hughan as an honorary member was unanimously carried amidst expressions of esteem and goodwill
from all present . The lodge itself has progressed beyond the expectations of any of its promoters , and the addition of Bro . Hughan's name : o its ' roll of honour , " although the last is not the least of its claims to represent the interests of Cornish Masonry in London .
The example set by the Grand Lodge of England in establishing so-called class lodges appears about to be followed by our Colonial offshoots . The Grand Lodge of Victoria has recently granted a warrant for the " Melbourne University Lodge , " and it was duly
consecrated in December last . We must confess that we see nothing but good in these endeavours to accom . modate and fit the Freemason to his environments , and are pleased to find that one of the newest Grand Lodges has shown a tendency to follow the example of the Mother Grand Lodge .

in the intervals of his cosmopjlitan Masonic work , he found time to perform the duties of Provincial Grand Secretary , in addition to managing for over 10 years the Charity organisation of the province in connection with the Central Institutions .
