Obituary .
BRO . REV . F . V . BUSSELL , P . G . CHAP ., D . P . G .. M . NOTTS . Another distinguished Mason has fallen a victim to the prevailing epidemic of influenza and the pneumonia which in so many instances has supervened with such fatal effects . On Sunday , the 21 st ult ., Bro . the Rev . Frederick Vernon Bussell , M . A ., P . G . C . of England ,
and D . P . G . M . of Nottinghamshire , succumbed to an attack which had seized him some five weeks previousl y , and his funeral , which took place a few days later at Baldeston , was very numerously attended not only b y his family and friends , but also by a very large number of his parishioners and his brethren in Masonry . Indeed , his funeral was to this extent Masonic in its
character , that after the burial service according to the Church of England had been performed , the brethren gathered around the grave of their late reverend brother , and Bro . the Rev . W . F . Hoot performed the Masonic rite , the oration , which was very eloquent and gave a full record of Bro . Bussell ' s services to the Crait , being delivered by Bro . H . George , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C .
Nottinghamshire , and when the latter was concluded , the brethren slowly and reverentl y filed past the grave , and threw in each of them a sprig of acacia . Bro . Bussell was , indeed , a most excellent Craftsman , and worth y in the highest degree of the respect shown to his memory on this sad occasion . He was initiated in the Pelham Lodge , No .
939 , Worksop , in the year 1 S 72 , and four years later was elected and installed W . M . In 18 7 8 he joined the Newton Lodge , No . 1 G 61 , Newark , and became Prov . G . Chaplain , still remaining , however , a member of his mother lodge , and in 1884 was appointed Prov . S . G . W . In 18 S 7 , at the Masonic Coiiiinemoratioii of the Queen ' s
Jubilee , he had conferred upon him the brevet rank of Past G . Chaplain . In 1 S 8 9 , on the lamented death of Bro . John Watson , Bro . Bussell was selected by the Duke of St . Albans , Prov . G . M ., for the responsible office ot D . P . G . M ., and in that cap icily our deceased brother succeeded in confirming himselt in the good opinion of his Nottinghamshire brethren . In Royal
Obituary.
Arch Masonry he had also won distinction , having been exalted in the Sheffield Chapter , and installed the first M . E . Z . of the Alexander Chapter , No . 1661 , Newark , and in 18 S 7 received the brevet rank of Past G . P . Soj . of Supreme Grand Chapter . He was also a Past Grand Chaplain in Mark Masonry , and a Past M . W . S . of the Talbot Chapter of Rose Croix , 18 ° . Sheffield
and Prelate from its foundation till now of the Magnus Chapter , Newark , in the Ancient and Accepted Rite . Thus in all the various branches of Freemasonry with which he was associated , our deceased brother had greatly distinguished himself , and dying , as he has
died , at the comparatively early age of 45 years , he nevertheless leaves behind him a reputation in Masonry with which few among the older members of the Fraternityare privileged . We sympathise greatly with the family , friends , and fellow Masons of our late reverend brother .
BRO . W . JONES LANE . We regret to have to record the death of Bro . W . Jones Lane , of Margate , which took place on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult ., under somewhat sudden circumstances . Although the deceased had been ill for about a month , during which time he was attended by his medical man , he was able to get out again , but he was seized with
sudden illness in the street , and expired soon after being taken home . Bro . W . Jones Lane was initiated in the Union Lodge , No . 127 , Margate , in 18 S 0 , in the work of which he was most enthusiastic . He served all the offices , and was W . M . in 1 SS 6 , and in the same year served as Steward tor the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and in 1 S 8 7 at the Centenary
Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , on both occasions taking up a large list . He was also a member of the Thanet Chapter , of which he was M . E . Z Apart from his great interest in Freemasonry , he was ever first and foremost in any charitable object which might be brought forward , and was one of the pr-. moters of a dinner given by the Union Lodge . during his Mastership
to the poor people of Margate , and which has now become an annual custom . His worth as a Freemason and the high esteem he was held in by his fellow townsmen was shown b y the signs of mourning throughout Margate , every shop being closed . Upwards of 50 Freemasons from the Union Lodge and Sittingbourne and Ramsgate attended . The first portion of
the funeral service , which was choral , was held at Trinity Church , and was read b y the Rev . Mr . Senior , the vicar , and that at the cemetery by the Rev . Tayler Jones , the Chaplain of the Union Lodge . The brethren took their last sorrowing farewell of the coffin which contained the remains of one they so loved and respected in the usual Masonic form . A large number
of wreaths were sent , those from the Union Lodge , Thanet Chapter , and Holmesdale Mark Lodge being very handsome . There was one also Irom Mrs . Lane , forming a cushion of violets , two feet square , in which were three smaller ones , composed of lilies ot' the valley , snowdrops , and marguerites ; and daisy tokens of affection from his three little children . The funeral took place on Monday , the 29 th ult .

Obituary .
BRO . REV . F .
In Royal
