The monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will be held at Freemasons' Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at 4 p . m . The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their next regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on VVednesday , thc Sth inst ., at 4 p . m .

The Court of Common Council , at its meeting on Thursday , the 25 th ult ., voted the sum of 100 guineas towards the relief of the sufferers by the recent fire at Salonica . Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs will leave town on Saturday , the 13 th inst ., in order to perform the ceremony of opening the new Town Hall at Ncwcastle-under-Lyme .

Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , having concluded his visit to Bro . Lord Tweedmoutli , at his Highland residence at Guisachan , near Beauly , has since been staying- at Brechin . EDINBURGH EXHIBITION . — The jury have awarded the diploma of honour and gold medal for malt and ales to Messts . Bingham-Cox and Co ., Kingsbury Brewery , St . Albans .

Bro . Earl and Countess Cowper , who arrived at their residence in St . James's-square from Hamburg in the early part of last week , have since left ' London for Beauvale , Eastwood , Notts . The Queen has approved of the appointment of the Hon . G . H . VV . Walsh , of the Grenadier Guards , as Aidede-Camp to Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston , Governor-General of Canada .

Bro . General Viscount Wolseley has this week taken over the command of the troops in Ireland , which , according to the latest returns , number 28 , 000 officers and men , exclusive of the militia . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran have been paying a series of visits in Ireland , and at the close of last weekwere staying with Bro . the Earl and Countess of Erne at Crom Castle , County Fermanagh .

The Duchess of Albany , who has been residing for several weeks at Birkhall , will return shortly to Claremont , ancl proceed thence to Germany on a visit to her father the Prince of Waldeck-Pyrmont . The name of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale appeared on the list of voters for the city of York , but on the application of a registration agent , the revising barrister struck it out , on the ground that liis Royal Highness was a peer .

The annual exhibition of the Photographic Society was inaugurated at jA . Pall Mall East , on Saturday evening , by a soiree , at which some 350 of the members and ' their friends were most cordially welcomed by the President , Bro . James Glaisher , P . G . D .

At a sale on thc 25 th ult . of antique carved oak furniture at Turton Towers , Lan-ashire , a bed presented by Henri IV . of France , and bearing date the year 1593 , was secured for the South Kensington Museum fur 340 guineas . A bedstead of the period of Oueen Anne fetched 70 guineas , and a richly carved sideboard 130 guineas .

Mr . _ Willard has been attracting large audiences this week in "Judah' * at the Shakespeare 'Theatre , Liverpool . On Wednesday night he was entertained at supper by the members of the local Art Club , who desired to bid him welcome on his return to a city where his early efforts as an actor are well remembered . Mr . Irving , we hear , has offered to concede to Mr . Willard the right to produce ' " Ravenswood " in America .

VVe regret to announce that Captain A . C . Knollys , a brother of Bro . Sir Francis Knollys , and one of the Chief Constables of the Metropolitan Police , has succumbed to the injuries he received a short time since by being thrown from his horse . Captain Knollys was formerly Adjutant of the Scots Guards , and in that capacity served in the Soudan Campaign . His death occurred on the s ^ th ult ., and the funeral took place at Highgate Cemetery on Saturday last .

Mr . VV . Farmer and Bro . Augustus Harris , the newlyelected Sheriffs of the City oH . ondon , were sworn into office at the Guildhall on Saturday last , in the presence of Bro . the Lord Mayor , several of the Aldermen and Town Councillors , and thc friends of the new officials . 'The breakfast was afterwards held in the Haberdashers' Hall ,

Woolf Joel , of thc Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , and thc Peace and Harmony Lodge , Dutoitspan , the former of whom has the distinction of being senior member of the Cape Legislature , were surrounded at Paddington by a numerous galaxy of brethren ancl friends who " hacl assembled to wish the travellers bon voyage . y the Great Western Railway Company at the disposal of the party , who left Dartmouth some hours later for the Cape on the good ship Roslin Castle . On the previous evening Bro . and Mrs . The Provincial Grand Chapter of Leicestershire and Rutland will be held at Freemasons' Hall , Leicester , on Tuesday next , under the auspices of St . George ' s Chapter , No . 1560 .

The Queen of Roumama left Llandudno for Crewe by special train on Wednesday evening . There she joined the express and proceeded on a visit to the Queen at Balmoral . Bro . Major-General Sir Redvers Buller assumed the post of Adjutant-General of the forces in succession to Bro . General Lord Wolseley , on Wednesday , with the temporary rank of Lieutenant-General .

I he Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud , will visit Crichel , near Wimborne , as guests of Lord Alington , early in December , and remain for about a week . The Prince of Wales will arrive in London from Scotland to-day ( Friday ) , and to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening will leave for Austria on a series of visits , notably to Count Festetics , in Hungary , for some shooting .

The Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement will commence the session on Tuesday , the 7 th inst ., at 6 . 30 o ' clock , at the White Hart , corner of Abchurch-lane and Cannonstreet , and will continue to meet every Tuesday until the end of May .

Colonel Sir Archibald C Campbell , Bart ., of Blythswood , has been recommended by Grand Committee for re-election to the throne of Grand Lodge of Scotland . That will be the sixth year successively he has filled the office of Grand Master of Scotland , a significant indication of his popularity in Grand Lodge .

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has received a legacy of ^ . ' 5000 under the will of the late Mr . Andrew Pickard , of Leeds and Ossett , for the purpose of building and maintaining five lifeboats on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland . We regret to hear that the King ot the Netherlands ,

owing to a return of the symptoms which attacked his nervous system , has been again unable to attend to business . His Majesty's general health , however , is robust , and the medical men in attendance anticipate that he will soon be able to resume his duties .

The Masonic contributor to the Glasgow Evening News writes : " Referring to the letter of 'XLVII . Degree , & c ., ' published in the Evening News recently , Bro . D . Murray Lyon , whom the writer of the letter claims as a child of the ' Early Grand ' repudiates any such claim , ancl informs me that the statement is untrue . "

Bro . General Lord Wolseley , on his arrival in Dublin on VVednesday to take over the command of the troops , met with a most enthusiastic reception , the crowd on the station platform breaking through the cordon of police , and so completely surrounding his lordship , that it was with difficulty a way could be made for him to pass into the station .

A grand concert and military assault-at-arms . under the auspices of Lodge Maryhill , No . 510 , in aid of the Grand Bazaar in connection with Annuity Fund of the Grand Lodge of Scotland . The entertainment will be given on Monday week in the Burgh Hall , under the patronage of Colonel Glencross , of the Lancashire Fusiliers . The gymnasium staff of Maryhill Barracks and the Band Boys will lend an additional interest to the proceedings .

A congress will be held in London from the 4 th to the nth instant , under the auspices of the International Literary ancl Artistic Association , forthe purpose of securing protection to International Copyright . The first meeting will take place , at the invitation of Bro . Lord Mayor Isaacs , at the Mansion House , to-morrow ( Saturday ) . In the evening his lordship will entertain the foreign delegates and others at dinner .

We have much pleasure in announcing the approaching marriage of William Norman Higgs , Esq ., eldest son of our lamented Bro . Higgs , late Sheriff of London , with Miss Minnie Beard , youngest daughter of Mr . Under-Sheriff Beard . The ceremony will take place by special license at

Putney parish church on Wednesday , the Sth inst ., at 1 . 30 . VVe understand that owing to the late bereavement the invitations are limited to the members of the respective families . VVe are quite sure that a large circle of friends will wish the young couple a full share in this life of health , happiness , and usefulness .

All who take an interest in preserving what is left to us of the picturesque and quaint of Old London were pleased to learn that by the action of a wealthy insurance corporation Staple Inn was saved from the spoiler , and although other buildings in the neighbourhood do not possess the same interest for the antiquarian yet they are eminently worth keeping , and not a few would miss

Ridler s Hotel , which is associated with thc old coaching recollections of the neighbourhood . Bro . Whaley , of Woods' Hotel , Furnival ' s Inn , has by acquiring Ridler ' s Hotel not only prevented its disappearance for a long time to come , but ensured to the frequenters of that Old Hostelry the excellent catering and attention to his guests for which the larger house in Furnival ' s Inn is noted .

On Friday , tbe 26 th ult ., the Bishop of Manchester consecrated the new chancel of Holy 'Trinity Church , Littleborough , which has been erected from the designs of Mr . Crowther , at a cost , including vestries and organ chamber , of over £ 6000 . To-morrow ( Saturday ) the completion of the chancel is to be the occasion of a demonstration of Craft ancl Royal Arch Freemasons . According to the programme ,

there will be a procession of the brethren of the Lodge of Benevolence , No . 22 C , and visiting brethren , from the church school to the church , where there is to be a special choral service , withasermon by Bro . the Rev . li . B . Bigoe Bagot , P . P . G . Chaplain of Cheshire , and also of East Lancashire . 'The vicar of the parish , Dr . Salts , his two curates , and both churchwardens are Craftsmen , one of the

latter , Bro . C . R . N . Beswicke-Royds , being a Past Officer of the Grand Lodge of England , and the local brethren are organising the demonstration in some measure as an act of goodwill to those so connected with the new and elegant structure . It is rumoured that the next production at the Lyceum will be a revival of " Much Ado about Nothing . " The fund which is being raised for the relief of the old and destitute survivors of the Light Brigade who took part in the Balaclava Charge now amounts to a total of £ 5550 . Bro . Colonel Harding , P . A . G . D . C , has returned to London , after a lengthened stay in the Ardennes and Spa , thoroughly renovated by a course of the tonic waters .

Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor of England ) has consented to accept the chairmanship of thc annual "Devonian Ball , " which will be held in London on the 24 th November . The Duke of Clarence and Avondale will visit Liverpool in the course of the present month for the purpose of opening- the new Royal Infirmary . An address on vellum , enclosed in a handsome casket , will be presented to his Royal Highness on the occasion .

Prior to the departure of the Queen of Roumama from Llandudno on VVednesday , an address in album form was presented to her Majesty , who was deeply touched at the kindness shown her , and expressed her thanks most warmly to the Town Commissioners who made the presentation .

Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., was unanimously elected President of the Institute of Journalists on Saturday last . In the course of the proceedings at the Birmingham Conference of the Institute , the retiring President was presented with his portrait in recognition of his successful efforts to obtain the charter of incorporation .

Thc 58 th annual meeting of the Royal South Bucks Agricultural Association was held on Wednesday , at Iver Heath , near Uxbridge . In the evening the dinner , at which the master of the Buckhounds ( the Earl of Coventry ) presided , was held at the Royal Hotel , Slough .

The Bishop of St . Albans on Wednesday , the ist inst ., consecrated the church of St . Thomas at West Ham , inthe presence of a crowded congregation , including the majority of the clergymen of the district , as well as the diocesan officials . 'The new church , which has been erected at a cost of £ 3200 , will accommodate about 500 worshippers .

Miss Harriett Jay announces that during her management of the Royalty occasional matinees will be given of classic modern comedies . The first production will , in all probability , be Angler ' s " Lionnes et Renards , " Englished with little or no alteration from the original . T his experiment will not interfere with the matinees of " Sweet Nancy , " which will be given every Saturday .

A meeting of the London Committee of the Edinburgh Exhibition was held at the Mansion House on VVednesday , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Isaacs , among those present being Bros . Alderman Sir F . Wyatt Truscott and bir H . Trueman Wood . I he proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to his lordship for presiding , and to the chairman and honorary secretaries of the Committee for their services .

The Alhambra management announces that Mr . Carl Hertz is especially engaged to produce on Monday next his Persian mystery , " Stroubaika , " which has met with great success in Paris , Berlin , and Vienna . This illusion is performed without any cabinet , the only paraphernalia being

four upright bars having chains , to which a swinging board is attached , and upon which a gentleman is securely fastened around the neck , arms , and legs by iron bands and locks . Nevertheless , an instantaneous substitution takes place . *

A bazaar in aid of the Royal Portsmouth , I ortsea , and Gosport Hospital was opened in the Portsmouth Town Hall on VVednesday under the patronage of the Queen and the Duchess of Connaught , and the naval , military , and municipal authorities have heartily co-operated in order to

ensure its success . Among the stallholders were Lady Willis , Lady and Miss Commerell , Lady Parker , Mrs . Gordon , and Lad } - Fitzwygram , while among the exhibits were the 8 4 guineas belonging to Lord Nelson , which were found in his cabin after the Battle of Trafalgar .

Among those who were endangered by the steam tramcai * accident at Finsbury Park last Saturday was the well-known dramatic critic , Mr . Joseph Knight . Mr . Knight was seated on ihe top of the car , and , but for the fact that the fall ot the vehicle was broken by contact with a lamp-post , and

that Mr . Knight slid , rather than fell , off the car , the result might have been serious . As it was , he was able to attend at Terry's 'Theatre on Monday , and we are glad to learn that he has felt no ill effects from the shock to which he was exposed .

Mr . Clement Scott had a big audience at the Birkbeck Institute on VVednesday night , and one that was as appreciative as it was big . His subject was " Thirty years at the Play-October 1 , 1 S 60 , to October 1 , lSgo , " and it may be imagined how happily he treated it—with how much humour and eloquence—and how much pleasure , consequently , he gave . He began with a graphic picture of the

English stage as it was in 1 S 60 , and this led up to hearty tributes to Robson ( " only a burlesque actor , yet what a genius ! only a pigmy , yet what a giant ! " ) and Fechter , who was saluted as the founder of the English school of natural acting , 'lheu the gloom of 1 S 60 was contrasted with the brightness of 1 S 70 , and Mr . Scott had much to say , among other things , about Robertson and the Bancrofts , Adelaide Neilson , and Mr . Irving in "Two Roses . "

The excursion season is now approaching its close , and it will be seen from an advertisement in another column that the Great Western Railway announce the last on their system to the West of England and the Weymouth Districts on the nth inst . October in the West of England is

often the most enjoyable month , and to those who have not taken their holiday or the more fortunate ones who have and desire to supplement it by another , the salubrious climate of Cornwall or South Devon presents attractions that it would be difficult to match .

The Queen of Roumama left Llandudno for Crewe by special train on Wednesday evening . There she joined the express and proceeded on a visit to the Queen at Balmoral . Bro . Major-General Sir Redvers Buller assumed the post of Adjutant-General of the forces in succession to Bro . General Lord Wolseley , on Wednesday , with the temporary rank of Lieutenant-General .

I he Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud , will visit Crichel , near Wimborne , as guests of Lord Alington , early in December , and remain for about a week . The Prince of Wales will arrive in London from Scotland to-day ( Friday ) , and to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening will leave for Austria on a series of visits , notably to Count Festetics , in Hungary , for some shooting .

The Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement will commence the session on Tuesday , the 7 th inst ., at 6 . 30 o ' clock , at the White Hart , corner of Abchurch-lane and Cannonstreet , and will continue to meet every Tuesday until the end of May .

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has received a legacy of ^ . ' 5000 under the will of the late Mr . Andrew Pickard , of Leeds and Ossett , for the purpose of building and maintaining five lifeboats on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland . We regret to hear that the King ot the Netherlands ,

owing to a return of the symptoms which attacked his nervous system , has been again unable to attend to business . His Majesty's general health , however , is robust , and the medical men in attendance anticipate that he will soon be able to resume his duties .

The Masonic contributor to the Glasgow Evening News writes : " Referring to the letter of 'XLVII . Degree , & c ., ' published in the Evening News recently , Bro . D . Murray Lyon , whom the writer of the letter claims as a child of the ' Early Grand ' repudiates any such claim , ancl informs me that the statement is untrue . "

Bro . General Lord Wolseley , on his arrival in Dublin on VVednesday to take over the command of the troops , met with a most enthusiastic reception , the crowd on the station platform breaking through the cordon of police , and so completely surrounding his lordship , that it was with difficulty a way could be made for him to pass into the station .

A grand concert and military assault-at-arms . under the auspices of Lodge Maryhill , No . 510 , in aid of the Grand Bazaar in connection with Annuity Fund of the Grand Lodge of Scotland . The entertainment will be given on Monday week in the Burgh Hall , under the patronage of Colonel Glencross , of the Lancashire Fusiliers . The gymnasium staff of Maryhill Barracks and the Band Boys will lend an additional interest to the proceedings .

A congress will be held in London from the 4 th to the nth instant , under the auspices of the International Literary ancl Artistic Association , forthe purpose of securing protection to International Copyright . On Friday , tbe 26 th ult ., the Bishop of Manchester consecrated the new chancel of Holy 'Trinity Church , Littleborough , which has been erected from the designs of Mr . Crowther , at a cost , including vestries and organ chamber , of over £ 6000 . To-morrow ( Saturday ) the completion of the chancel is to be the occasion of a demonstration of Craft ancl Royal Arch Freemasons . According to the programme ,

there will be a procession of the brethren of the Lodge of Benevolence , No . 22 C , and visiting brethren , from the church school to the church , where there is to be a special choral service , withasermon by Bro . the Rev . li . " The fund which is being raised for the relief of the old and destitute survivors of the Light Brigade who took part in the Balaclava Charge now amounts to a total of £ 5550 . Bro . Colonel Harding , P . A . G . D . C , has returned to London , after a lengthened stay in the Ardennes and Spa , thoroughly renovated by a course of the tonic waters .

Bro . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor of England ) has consented to accept the chairmanship of thc annual "Devonian Ball , " which will be held in London on the 24 th November . The Duke of Clarence and Avondale will visit Liverpool in the course of the present month for the purpose of opening- the new Royal Infirmary . An address on vellum , enclosed in a handsome casket , will be presented to his Royal Highness on the occasion .

Prior to the departure of the Queen of Roumama from Llandudno on VVednesday , an address in album form was presented to her Majesty , who was deeply touched at the kindness shown her , and expressed her thanks most warmly to the Town Commissioners who made the presentation .

Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., was unanimously elected President of the Institute of Journalists on Saturday last . In the course of the proceedings at the Birmingham Conference of the Institute , the retiring President was presented with his portrait in recognition of his successful efforts to obtain the charter of incorporation .

Thc 58 th annual meeting of the Royal South Bucks Agricultural Association was held on Wednesday , at Iver Heath , near Uxbridge . In the evening the dinner , at which the master of the Buckhounds ( the Earl of Coventry ) presided , was held at the Royal Hotel , Slough .

The Bishop of St . Albans on Wednesday , the ist inst ., consecrated the church of St . Thomas at West Ham , inthe presence of a crowded congregation , including the majority of the clergymen of the district , as well as the diocesan officials . 'The new church , which has been erected at a cost of £ 3200 , will accommodate about 500 worshippers .

Miss Harriett Jay announces that during her management of the Royalty occasional matinees will be given of classic modern comedies . The first production will , in all probability , be Angler ' s " Lionnes et Renards , " Englished with little or no alteration from the original . T his experiment will not interfere with the matinees of " Sweet Nancy , " which will be given every Saturday .

A meeting of the London Committee of the Edinburgh Exhibition was held at the Mansion House on VVednesday , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Isaacs , among those present being Bros . Alderman Sir F . Wyatt Truscott and bir H . Trueman Wood . I he proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to his lordship for presiding , and to the chairman and honorary secretaries of the Committee for their services .

The Alhambra management announces that Mr . Carl Hertz is especially engaged to produce on Monday next his Persian mystery , " Stroubaika , " which has met with great success in Paris , Berlin , and Vienna . This illusion is performed without any cabinet , the only paraphernalia being

four upright bars having chains , to which a swinging board is attached , and upon which a gentleman is securely fastened around the neck , arms , and legs by iron bands and locks . Nevertheless , an instantaneous substitution takes place . *

A bazaar in aid of the Royal Portsmouth , I ortsea , and Gosport Hospital was opened in the Portsmouth Town Hall on VVednesday under the patronage of the Queen and the Duchess of Connaught , and the naval , military , and municipal authorities have heartily co-operated in order to

ensure its success . Among the stallholders were Lady Willis , Lady and Miss Commerell , Lady Parker , Mrs . Gordon , and Lad } - Fitzwygram , while among the exhibits were the 8 4 guineas belonging to Lord Nelson , which were found in his cabin after the Battle of Trafalgar .

Among those who were endangered by the steam tramcai * accident at Finsbury Park last Saturday was the well-known dramatic critic , Mr . Joseph Knight . Mr . Knight was seated on ihe top of the car , and , but for the fact that the fall ot the vehicle was broken by contact with a lamp-post , and

that Mr . Knight slid , rather than fell , off the car , the result might have been serious . As it was , he was able to attend at Terry's 'Theatre on Monday , and we are glad to learn that he has felt no ill effects from the shock to which he was exposed .

Mr . Clement Scott had a big audience at the Birkbeck Institute on VVednesday night , and one that was as appreciative as it was big . His subject was " Thirty years at the Play-October 1 , 1 S 60 , to October 1 , lSgo , " and it may be imagined how happily he treated it—with how much humour and eloquence—and how much pleasure , consequently , he gave . He began with a graphic picture of the

English stage as it was in 1 S 60 , and this led up to hearty tributes to Robson ( " only a burlesque actor , yet what a genius ! only a pigmy , yet what a giant ! " ) and Fechter , who was saluted as the founder of the English school of natural acting , 'lheu the gloom of 1 S 60 was contrasted with the brightness of 1 S 70 , and Mr . Scott had much to say , among other things , about Robertson and the Bancrofts , Adelaide Neilson , and Mr . Irving in "Two Roses . "

The excursion season is now approaching its close , and it will be seen from an advertisement in another column that the Great Western Railway announce the last on their system to the West of England and the Weymouth Districts on the nth inst . October in the West of England is
