JOHN STEARN GISSING . It is with much regret we have to announce the death of Bro . John Steam Gissing , which took place at Woodbridge , on the 13 th ult ., a loss which will be shared in by all the Masons of Suffolk . Bro . Gissing was initiated in the Doric Lodge December 2 nd , 1 S 41 , was J . W . in 1842 , served as

Master of the Doric in 1 S 44 , 1 S 52 , 1 S 59 , and 1 S 64 , was also P . P . G . J . W . Suffolk , and served the office of Z . in the Royal York Chapter , Si ; was also a Knijjht Templar and a Rose Croix Mason , and in all these offices he has done good service . He was interred in the cemetery at Woodbridge , on Friday , the 20 th inst ., followed by numerous members of the Craft and very many sorrowing friends .

BRO . J . BROADBENT . We regret to announce the premature death of Bro . J . Broadbent , W . M . St . Thomas ' s Lodge , 922 , Manchester , at the early age of thirty-two years . Bro . Broadbent had for some months past been suffering from congestion of the bowels , which resulted in diabetes , and terminated fatally on Monday , the 9 th ult ., at his residence , Waterloo-road ,

Cheetham . 'The deceased brother was a P . Z . of the Derby Chapter , 1055 ; a Past S . W . of Concord Lodge , 1534 , and W . M . of St . Thomas's Lodge , 992 , Lower Broughton . The funeral was attended by several well-known members of the Craft in Manchester , amongst whom were Bros . J . J . Meakin , P . M . and Sec . 992 ; Joseph Warren , P . M . 992 ; Henry Fisher , P . The brethren met at the Masonic Rooms , Bedford-street , Bury New-road , and proceeded in carriages to the residence of our deceased brother , where the hearse and a carriage containing some immediate relatives were

waiting . The cortege slowly wended its way along the Bury New-road to Keisal Church , where the first portion of the service was read by the Rev . Canon Brayshaw , and the brethren afterwarels followed the remains of our brother to the grave , and witnessed their interment , during which the Rev . Canon read the concluding portion of the solemn service . 'The deceased leaves a widow and children .

A band contest , in connection with the National Rifle Association , will take place on Wednesday , the 15 th inst ., in the Crystal Palace , to select a band for the shooting meeting of the National Rifle Association , which will be held at Wimbledon from Monday , July nth , to Saturday , July 23 rd , inclusive . Prizes : first prize , £ 15 , and an

engagement by the Council of the National Rille Association for the Wimbledon Meeting , the band receiving the sum of £ 120—in all £ 135 . Second prize , £ 10 . Judges Mr . J . P . Bro . the Rev . Dr . P . H . Ernest Brette , 31 , was installed M . W . S . of the Palestine Chapter , Rose Croix , on Tuesday , the 24 th ult . Bro . S . C . Hall announces the publication , through Messrs . Griffiths and Farran , of St . Paul's

Churchyard , of a series of 220 short poems , entitled " Rhymes in Council ; Aphorisms Versified . " They are written in his eighty-first year , and he bequeaths them as a legacy to his kind ; the result of knowledge based on experience and matured by thought , " the proceeds of a long life . "

Bro . Sir T . Brassey , ALP . ( one of the Lords of the Admiralty ) , has been unanimously elected on the court of the Shipwrights' Company . The Queen has signified to Bro . General Sir Frederick ~ Roberts her wish that he should sit to Mr . Frank Holl , A . R . A ., for his portrait for her own possession .

Comp . M . Bamberger was , at the last meeting of the Faith Chapter , presented with a gold jewel , elaborately chased , together with a testimonial on vellum , beautifully illuminated and aesthetically framed . The inscription on the jewel is— " Presented to Comp . Bamberger , as a slight recognition of his generous and valued services as Treasurerof the Faith Chapter , May , 1 SS 1 . " The testimonial , reads as follows : " This testimonial , together with a

Treasurer ' s gold jewel , was presented to Comp . M . Bamberger by the members of the Faith Chapter , No . 141 , in grateful acknowledgment of the valuable aid rendered to the chapter by him for the past seven years , and as a token of fraternal regard and esteem . " Bro . Ex-Sheriff Burt took the chair on Tuesday evening at the annual meeting of the Protestant Blind Society at the Cannon-street Hotel .

Boord , ALP ., has given . 1 donation of twenty-five guineas in support of the anniversary festival of the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum , which will be presided over by Bro . Bro . the Rev . Dr . P . II . Ernest Brette has been appointed by the Lords of the Admiralty Examiner to the Royal Naval College , Greenwich . Bro . J . A . Rucker , President Colonial Board , has been placed on the Committee of the John Hervey Testimonial Rund .

The total subscriptions received for the John Hervey Testimonial Fund up to the end of May is £ 621 IIS . Bro . the Marquis of Londonderry , P . G . M . Durham , was elected a Governor of the Royal Agricultural Society at a meeting of the council held on Wednesday last .

Bro . W . S . Daniel , W . M . of the Alexandra Palace Lodge , No . 1541 , worked the ceremony of installation at the Kennington Lodge of Instruction , at the Horns Tavern , Kennington , on 'Tuesday last . The Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement held their last meeting of the 1 SS 0-S 1 session on Tuesday last . Bro . Agg Gardner has joined the Wingh ' eld Testimonial Committee . The installation meeting of the Farringdon Without Lodge , No . 1745 , was held at the I lolborn Viaduct Hotel on Monday last , when Bro . II . J . Lardncr was installed Worshipful Master .

M . for the ensuing year . Bro . H . R . H . Prince Leopold , Duke of Albany , has consented to receive the appointment of Past Grand Mark Master .

Bro . the Rev . Dr . Cox , v : car of St . Helen ' s , Bishopsgate , preached a sermon in that church on Sunday morning on behalf of the Bishop of London ' s Fund . The amount collected was £ 2 19 s . 4 d . Bro . Sheriff Waterlow and Mrs . Waterlow opened a bazaar on Tuesday at Christ Church , Highburygrove , in aid of the building fund of St . John ' s Church , Highbury-vale .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has accepted the office of President of the City and Guilds of London Institute . H . M . Commissioners for 1 S 51 having signified their approval of the plans for the Central Institution prepared by Mr . Alfred Waterhouse under the instructions of the committee , the Prince of Wales has expressed his willingness , as President of the Institute , to lay the foundationstone of the building in July next .

Bros . J . Defries and Sons , of Houndsditch , were entrusted with the entire arrangements of the lighting and decorations on the occasion of the grand bail given by Viscountess Clifden , at Dover House , ' Whitehall . We understand that Bro . Emra Holmes ' s books , "Tales , Poems , and Masonic Papers , " and "Amabel Vaughan , " are both now out of print . A few copies of

the latter may still be had , however , of Bro . M . Tweddell . Stokesley , Yorkshire , for whose benefit the works were published . It is in contemplation to publish shortly a new volume of Bro . Holmes's poems which have appeared during the past year or two in numerous newspapers and magazines in England , Ireland , Scotland , the United States , and Canada . A sketch of Bro . Emra Holmes will appear in an early issue of the " Biograph . "

Bro . Martin II . Rice , Past Grand Master of Indiana , and enitor of the " Masonic Advocate , " of Indianapolis , celebrated his silver wedding on April 22 nd . Bro . J . Derby Allcroft ( Treasurer of Christ ' s Hospital ) presided at the fifty-fourth half-yearly election of

candidates for the benefits of the Royal Hospital for Incurables , which is situate at West-hill , Putney-heath , at Cannon-street Hotel , on Friday , the 27 th uft . There were twenty-five candidates to be elected out of a total of 143 approved applicants , male and female , whose ages ranged from 21 to S 3 years .

In our report last week of the consecration of the Audley Lodge , No . 1 S 96 , at Newport , Salop , we gave amongst the visitors present the name of Bro . H . Cregg , as D . P . G . M . Worcestershire . It should have been Bro . W . Masefield .

It has now been decisively arranged that the Prince of Wales will visit Yarmouth on Thursday , the 9 th inst ., arriving b y the 1 . 50 train . He will inspect the Norfolk Artillery Militia at half-past three o'clock . At 6 . 25 on the same day the Duke of Cambridge will arrive , and on the Friday will inspect first the Norfolk Artillery Volunteers and then the Militia Regiment . The Prince and the

Duke will have apartments at Shaddingfield Lodge , the residence of Mr . S . Nightingall , and will mess with the officers of the Artillery Militia , of which Bro . Lord Suffield is colonel , at the Assembly Rooms . Their Royal Highnesses wiil attend the performance of the London Gaiety Company at the Aquarium on Thursday evening , leaving Yarmouth on Friday . A meeting of the Joppa Chapter was held at the

Albion Tavern , Aldersgatc-street , on Monday last , Comp . Lewis Lazarus , M . E . Z ., in the chair , assisted by Comps . Gulliford , IL ; Isaac , J . ; Baum , S . E . ; and Cohen , P . S . The ballot was taken for five brethren and a joining member , who were unanimously accepted and exalted . ' 1 he usual monthly meeting of the Lodge of Israel , Liverpool , was held on the 16 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Bro . S . J . Hcnochsberg , W . M ., in the chair . As the result of the last ball , the sum of £ 50 was added to the Benevolent Fund , which now amounts to over / 300 .

Bro . Wilhelm Ganz ' s ( Past Grand Organist ) orchestral concerts arc approaching the close of the series , but two more remaining to be given . On the latest occasion —on Saturday last—Herr Ernest Loewenburg , a pupil of Rubinstein , made his first appearance here , and played with great success . Another speciality at Saturday's concert was an effective rendering of Berlioz ' s Romeo and

Juliet symphony ( endingwith the " Queen Mab" scherzo ) . ' The vocal portions were sung by Miss Orridgc and Mr . F . Leigh and a select choir . The remainder of the concert comprised Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture , that by Rossini to his Guillaume Tell , and vocal solos contributed by Miss Orridge . Bro . Ganz conducted ably . At the next concert on June 11 the music of Gluck's opera Orfeo is to be performed .

Bro . Sir Watkin Williams Wynn , Bart ., P . G . M . North Wales and Shropshire , Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1 st Denbighshire Rifle Volunteer Corps , has been appointed one of the aides-de-camp to Her Majesty for the service of her Volunteer Force , with the rank of colonel in that Force .

Bro . Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts , G . C . B ., CLE ., V . C ., will not , says the Standard , leave England until the end of the year for India , his friends and medical advisers recommending that he should enjoy a complete rest for a thort time after the great strain which his constitution has lately suffered during the two years ' campaign in Afganistan .

At the sale of Mr . F . J . Coleman ' s Landseer pictures on Saturday , the 28 th ult ., six pictures sold for £ 26 , 355 . Millais' picture , "The Princes in the Tower , " sold for £ 3990 .

Canon Brayshaw , and the brethren afterwarels followed the remains of our brother to the grave , and witnessed their interment , during which the Rev . Canon read the concluding portion of the solemn service . 'The deceased leaves a widow and children .

Churchyard , of a series of 220 short poems , entitled " Rhymes in Council ; Aphorisms Versified . " They are written in his eighty-first year , and he bequeaths them as a legacy to his kind ; the result of knowledge based on experience and matured by thought , " the proceeds of a long life . "

Bro . Sir T . Brassey , ALP . ( one of the Lords of the Admiralty ) , has been unanimously elected on the court of the Shipwrights' Company . The Queen has signified to Bro . General Sir Frederick ~ Roberts her wish that he should sit to Mr . Frank Holl , A . R . A ., for his portrait for her own possession .

Comp . M . Bamberger was , at the last meeting of the Faith Chapter , presented with a gold jewel , elaborately chased , together with a testimonial on vellum , beautifully illuminated and aesthetically framed . The inscription on the jewel is— " Presented to Comp . Bamberger , as a slight recognition of his generous and valued services as Treasurerof the Faith Chapter , May , 1 SS 1 . " The testimonial , reads as follows : " This testimonial , together with a

Treasurer ' s gold jewel , was presented to Comp . M . John ' s Church , Highbury-vale .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has accepted the office of President of the City and Guilds of London Institute . H . M . Commissioners for 1 S 51 having signified their approval of the plans for the Central Institution prepared by Mr . Alfred Waterhouse under the instructions of the committee , the Prince of Wales has expressed his willingness , as President of the Institute , to lay the foundationstone of the building in July next .

Bros . J . Defries and Sons , of Houndsditch , were entrusted with the entire arrangements of the lighting and decorations on the occasion of the grand bail given by Viscountess Clifden , at Dover House , ' Whitehall . We understand that Bro . Emra Holmes ' s books , "Tales , Poems , and Masonic Papers , " and "Amabel Vaughan , " are both now out of print . A few copies of

the latter may still be had , however , of Bro . M . Tweddell . Stokesley , Yorkshire , for whose benefit the works were published . It is in contemplation to publish shortly a new volume of Bro . Holmes's poems which have appeared during the past year or two in numerous newspapers and magazines in England , Ireland , Scotland , the United States , and Canada . A sketch of Bro . Emra Holmes will appear in an early issue of the " Biograph . "

Bro . Martin II . Rice , Past Grand Master of Indiana , and enitor of the " Masonic Advocate , " of Indianapolis , celebrated his silver wedding on April 22 nd . Bro . J . Derby Allcroft ( Treasurer of Christ ' s Hospital ) presided at the fifty-fourth half-yearly election of

candidates for the benefits of the Royal Hospital for Incurables , which is situate at West-hill , Putney-heath , at Cannon-street Hotel , on Friday , the 27 th uft . There were twenty-five candidates to be elected out of a total of 143 approved applicants , male and female , whose ages ranged from 21 to S 3 years .

In our report last week of the consecration of the Audley Lodge , No . 1 S 96 , at Newport , Salop , we gave amongst the visitors present the name of Bro . H . Cregg , as D . P . G . M . Worcestershire . It should have been Bro . W . Masefield .

It has now been decisively arranged that the Prince of Wales will visit Yarmouth on Thursday , the 9 th inst ., arriving b y the 1 . 50 train . He will inspect the Norfolk Artillery Militia at half-past three o'clock . At 6 . 25 on the same day the Duke of Cambridge will arrive , and on the Friday will inspect first the Norfolk Artillery Volunteers and then the Militia Regiment . The Prince and the

Duke will have apartments at Shaddingfield Lodge , the residence of Mr . S . Nightingall , and will mess with the officers of the Artillery Militia , of which Bro . Lord Suffield is colonel , at the Assembly Rooms . Their Royal Highnesses wiil attend the performance of the London Gaiety Company at the Aquarium on Thursday evening , leaving Yarmouth on Friday . A meeting of the Joppa Chapter was held at the

Albion Tavern , Aldersgatc-street , on Monday last , Comp . Lewis Lazarus , M . E . Z ., in the chair , assisted by Comps . Gulliford , IL ; Isaac , J . ; Baum , S . E . ; and Cohen , P . S . The ballot was taken for five brethren and a joining member , who were unanimously accepted and exalted . ' 1 he usual monthly meeting of the Lodge of Israel , Liverpool , was held on the 16 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Bro . S . J . Hcnochsberg , W . M ., in the chair . As the result of the last ball , the sum of £ 50 was added to the Benevolent Fund , which now amounts to over / 300 .

Bro . Wilhelm Ganz ' s ( Past Grand Organist ) orchestral concerts arc approaching the close of the series , but two more remaining to be given . On the latest occasion —on Saturday last—Herr Ernest Loewenburg , a pupil of Rubinstein , made his first appearance here , and played with great success . Another speciality at Saturday's concert was an effective rendering of Berlioz ' s Romeo and

Juliet symphony ( endingwith the " Queen Mab" scherzo ) . ' The vocal portions were sung by Miss Orridgc and Mr . F . Leigh and a select choir . The remainder of the concert comprised Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture , that by Rossini to his Guillaume Tell , and vocal solos contributed by Miss Orridge . Bro . Ganz conducted ably . At the next concert on June 11 the music of Gluck's opera Orfeo is to be performed .

Bro . Sir Watkin Williams Wynn , Bart ., P . G . M . North Wales and Shropshire , Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1 st Denbighshire Rifle Volunteer Corps , has been appointed one of the aides-de-camp to Her Majesty for the service of her Volunteer Force , with the rank of colonel in that Force .

Bro . Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts , G . C . B ., CLE ., V . C ., will not , says the Standard , leave England until the end of the year for India , his friends and medical advisers recommending that he should enjoy a complete rest for a thort time after the great strain which his constitution has lately suffered during the two years ' campaign in Afganistan .

At the sale of Mr . F . J . Coleman ' s Landseer pictures on Saturday , the 28 th ult ., six pictures sold for £ 26 , 355 . Millais' picture , "The Princes in the Tower , " sold for £ 3990 .
