PROVINCIAL GRAND MARK LODGE OF DERBYSHIRE .

The annual meeting of the above Provincial Grand Mark Lodge was held on Friday , the 17 th ' ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Derby . The Prov . G . M ., Bro . Abraham Woodiwiss , presided , and was supported by a large number of Grand and Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past . The reports of tbe various lodges showed that the number of members had increased , and that the Charities bad been generously supported .

G . Std . Br ., replied on behalf of the Grand Officers . The CHAIRMAN then gave the toast of the evening , "The Preceptor and

Secretary of the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge of Instruction . " He spoke in glowing terms of the admirable way in which both had fulfilled their duties—the Preceptor for 20 years and the Secretary for ia years . On behalf of the brethren of the Iodge of instruction he presented each of them with his portrait as a token of the esteem in which they were held .

Bro . HATTON , Vice-Chairman , said that as there was a surplus of the funds subscribed for the portraits , it had been determined by the Committee that it should be devoted to the purchase of a present to their excellent Chairman of the evening . Bro . FLACK then presented Bro . Rogers with a silver cigarette case . In reply Bro . DAVIS , Preceptor , said what a labour of love it had been to him

to give Masonic instruction ; alluded feelingly to those of his former pupils who had passed away ; how proud he felt the chair of W . M . had been well and worthily filled by many who had received instruction from him . He said the Masonic Charities had been nobly supported by the lodge of instruction . He thanked the brethren most heartily for the portrait of himself , which he felt sure his family would highly value .

Bro . MASON " , Sec , said he hardly knew how to sufficiently thank the brethren for their kindness in presenting him with the portrait of that fellow " who looks like me" ; he could safely tell his good wife that it was the best portrait of her " first husband . " He said that when Bro . Flack spoke to him relative to his portrait he at first declined to give his consent , but seeing that it would cause great disappointment , he ultimately accorded his permission . The cause of his previous hesitation was his daughter ' s ill-health , which might necessitate his living out of town . Under these circumstances he could not \ v < : II accept a testimonial were

he unable to attend the lodge as heretofore . He trusted , however , Fhe would soon be better . He stated that this was the tenth year he had bsen Secretary , and it was very gratifying to him to feel that his services had been appreciated . He had always endeavoured to act fairly and honourably to all ; to this he attributed the great success of the lodge . He said he would not mar the enjoyment of the brethren by making a long speech ; he considered long speeches were like long tunnels— ' a bore . ' In conclusion , he thanked them most heartily for their goodwill and sympathy , and for the very nice present they had given him .

The CHAIRMAN also replied . He thanked the brethren for the pretty cigar case , and said he expected it would be an expensive article to him , as many would like to sample its contents . He spoke of having lately won a large silver cup in a coursing match ; he caused it to be filled with champagne , from which he drank the health of the brethren , who , on it being passed round , pledged him in return .

The toast of " The Visitors was given , to which Bros . MANFIELU and J . PERCY FITZGERALD replied . The PRECEPTOR gave "The Health of the Chairman . " Bro . ROGERS replied , saying it had been a great pleasure to him to preside over them that evening . Other toasts followed . The proceedings were agreeably enlivened by the vocil contributions of the brethren .

The reception ended , the company adjourned to the banqueting hal 1 , where was enjoyed a sumptuois banquet , personally superintended b y Bro . Kalla and staff , who were most assiduDus in their duties . The tables were very prettily decorated . On the removal of the cloth , the W . M . proposed the loyal toast of " The Queen , " coupled with " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales and the rest ot the Royal Family , " and remarked that among all bodies of British subjects none were more loyal than the members of the Craft .

The next toast proposed by the W . M . was that of "The Ladies , " which , he said , was a pleasurable duty , and one not often honoured at our meetings ; but when Decisions arose for it to be placed before the brethren , it was always received by them with esteem and affliction , for no body of m ? n could bi m ire devoted to the ladies than Freemasons . Lio ' . cing round the festive bjard , and seeing such a large gathering of ladies present , he believed that that sentimsnt was thoroughly

reciprocated by them . He hoped that they would hive a most enjoyable evening . Bro . J . LK ; HITOOT , P . M ., very suitably replied ou behalf of ths ladies , and said by the command of the W . M ., and gracious consent of the ladies , he wuild lor the moment assume he was one of their sisters , who were delighted to agiin have the opportunity of attending and receiving at the hands of the brethren of the Selwyn Lodge such a cordial welcome . Itwas not the first time they hid been present , and he must say that their presence pave a successful tone to the
