MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

Stanley of Preston . Bro . the Earl of Limerick vvas in attendance as Lord-in-Waiting . The Prince of Wales , attended by Bro . Sir Francis Knollys and Col . Her Majesty has been awarded first prizes for Hereford steers and cows , first and third prizes for shorthorn steers , and first for Devon heifers , at the 39 th Annual Cattle Show at Birmingham , which was opened on Saturday last . Bro , Sir Morell Mackenzie had the honour of being received by the Queen at Windsor Castle on

Saturday afternoon last , and made a personal report to her Majesty upon the illness of the Imperial Crown Prince of Germany . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting of the Coleman-street Ward on Saturday last , when Bro . Jas . E . Saunders , P . G . D ., the Deputy of the Ward , was unanimously elected successor to the late Alderman Sir

W . McArthur , K . C . M . G ., and returned thanks for the honour . There is every probability that the testimonials about to be presented to Mr . J . F . Soulsby , in recognition of his services as Private Secretarv to the last 12 Lord Mayors , will be handsome ones . The members of the Court of Aldermen vvill make a separate presentation , but to the other vvhich is being raised nearly all the "

Corporators " have promised to contribute . G ., & c , presided , and vvas supported bv Bros . J . H . Hawkins , P . M ., G . A ., & c ; E . J . Stonem ' an , C . C ; T . C . Walls , P . M ., & c , and others . The proceedings were throughout of a most enjoyable and enthusiastic nature , and some of the speeches were of no ordinary merit .

Lord Derby has recently expressed the opinion that to have a well instructed people is no less than a question of life or death to a nation , and he specially commends competitions , prizes , scholarships , & c , as valuable agencies for the diffusion of sound and useful teaching . Apropos of this , it may be mentioned that the Editor of Cassell ' s Magazine has prepared a scheme of an Amateur

Free University , of which details are given in the December part . Bro . T . Phillips , P . M . Mozart Lodge , presided at the annual dinner of the King Edward Lodge ( Manchester Unity ) of Odd Fellows , at the Clarence Hotel , Aldersgate-street , E . C , on the 25 th ult . It vvas the most successful meeting of the kind the lodge has ever held .

The Chairman was supported by many prominent Odd Fellows and a sprinkling of the Craft , amongst whom wee Bros . E . Mallett , P . M . ; E . C . Kilsby , W . M . 1702 ; Egbert Roberts , S . W . 917 ; H . S . M . Emslie , 93 ; J . King , 1 ^ 23 ; Davy , 188 ; arid others . Upwards oE 150 sat down to dinner . This lodge enjoys great popularity among City clerks and warehousemen , who are its principal members .

The Stereoscopic Company , of vvhich the late Bro . Alderman Nottage vvas the founder , have recently published a number of most interesting photographs , the chief amongst them being an excellent likeness of the late Lord Wolverton , whose sudden death vvas duly noticed in the columns of the Freemason , he being an initiate of the Apollo University Lodge . The new Lord Mayor is taken

with a singularly expressive manner . It may not be generally known that Bro . De Keyser is a member of the Emulation lodge which meets at the Albion , and of vvhich Bro . Alderman Savory is an initiate . On account of his unexpected demise , the company have also re-published some photographs of Sir Wm . McArthur . This alderman was the only Lord Mayor of recent years vvho vvas not a

member of the Craft . The last non-member being Alderman Cotton . We are pleased to know that for some years to come each occupant of the civic chair is already a brother amongst Masons . Another interesting picture is that of the clergy who officiated on the occasion of the Jubilee in Westminster Abbey . Although—as far as vve knowneither Archbishop , Bishop , Dean , nor other Clergyman are

Masons , yet this group has much interest for the Fraternity who took such a conspicuous part in celebrating the Queen's Jubilee . The higher clerics are represented in the gorgeous copes they wore on that occasion . Whilst last but by no means least is a splendid new likeness of our beloved Princess , whom all brethren adore as the wife ol our Grand Master , and who takes such a kindly interest in the Craft and our Institutions .

The death is announced at Frettenham , Norfolk , of Bro . Walter H . Painter , brother of Bro . C Painter , of Leadenhall-street . Bro . E . Y . Jolliffe has been unanimousl y elected Worshipful Master of the Neptune Lodge , No . 22 , for the ensuing year .

Bro . T . Hastings Miller has issued his address as a candidate to represent the Ward of Billingsgate in the Court of Common Council , City of London . Her Majesty , accompanied by the Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg and their infant daughter , arrived at Windsor from Scotland on Saturday last , and were driven at once to the Castle .

Bro . Baron Henry De Worms , replying to a deputation upon the sugar bounties question , on Wednesday , the 23 rd ult ., said that at the coming conference her Majesty ' s Government would do their best to secure the abolition of the bounties . There is reason to believe that Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston , P . G . W ., vvill succeed the Marquis ol

Lansdowne as Governor-General of Canada , and if so , that Bro . Baron H . de Worms , now Parliamentary Under-Secretary , vvill enter the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade . A testimonial , in the shape of a silver cigar case , was presented by "the Printers of London " to Bro . G . A . Sala , in the library of the Daily Telegraph , on Friday ,

the 25 th ult ., in recognition of his services as Chairman at the last Festival of the Printers' Pension , Almshouse , and Orphan Asylum Corporation . Bro . Augustus Harris has kindly granted the use of Drury-lane Theatre for the matinee to be given on Friday , December gth , for the benefit of Bro . Charles

Warner . Mr . Harry Payne is busy preparing his budget of jokes for the Drury-lane pantomime . The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress , on Tuesday evening , opened an Industrial Exhibition of articles made by the children attending the Sunday Schools at the City Temple , when a donation of £ 20 for the school fund vvas received from Bro . H . B . Marshall .

The funeral of Bro . F . T . Isett took place in Highgate Cemetery , on Saturday last , the opening portion of the service having been held previously in St . Saviour ' s Church , near the Adelaide-road , N . W . There vvas a large attendance of the family , friends , and associates in business of the deceased .

A concert in aid of the Masonic Charities was given under the auspices of the Lodge of Emulation , No . 299 , at the Conservative Hall , Spital-street , Dartford , on the 23 rd ult . 'There was an excellent programme and a crowded audience , and as the concert enjoyed the patronage of Bros . Earl Amherst , P . G . M . ; J . S . Eastes , D . P . G . M . ; Sir VV . Hart Dyke , Bart ., M . P ., and many other Provincial

Grand Officers , Present and Past , of Kent , we may hope for a favourable result . Bro . Godson , M . P . for Kidderminster , met vvith a serious accident on Monday night . He had visited Kidderminster to attend a non-political meeting , and in

leaving the premises where the assembly had been held he stumbled and fell down several steps to the pavement . Although no bones were broken , our worthy brother's right leg was badly hurt . He vvas conveyed to VVolverley Court , and medical aid was obtained . It is feared that the accident will confine Bro . Godson to his room for some time .

By an inadvertence on our part , certain remarks alluded to in our leading paragraph last week on " Freemasonry in Cambridgeshire , " on vvhich vve commented favourably , vvere attributed to Bro . Pashlar , whereas they vvere made by Bro . Papworth when responding to the toast of "The Masonic Charities , " at the Prov . Grand Lodge banquet . Bro . Papworth has done so much valuable work

in connection with the Cambridgeshire Masonic Charitable Association , that we sincerely regret having assigned the praise which is his due , to another meritorious brother . The proprietors of the Royal Forest Hotel have commenced the works for laying out the new pleasure grounds contiguous to the hotel , comprising about two and a half acres , as tennis lawns , Scottish bowling greens ,

archery ground , quoit ground , with possibly a rifle gallery for Morris tube and revolver practice , and a bowling alley . There will be nine tennis courts , and the vvhole will be suirounded by a shubbery and 12 feet gravel promenade . The piece of land is one of the most picturesque in the forest , being surrounded by magnificent oaks , and bounded on the

one side by the forest pool . We have no doubt that the local clubs vvill find it to their advantage to enter into arrangements for the use of the grounds . Every care is being taken to carry out the works in as perfect a manner as possible , and the courts will be on a dead level . The works are under the professional supervision of Mr . J . A . McKenzie .

In consideration of the long and valuable services rendered to the cause of Masonry in its various Degrees by Bro . 'Thomas Poore , P . M ., PA , iS ° , & c , it is intended to present that estimable brother with a testimonial . Bro . Alfred Williams , P . M ., has kindly accepted the office of Chairman to the Committee ; Bro . D . P . Cama , Past G . Treas ., & c , that of Vice-Chairman ; Bro . H . Lardner ,

P . P . G . O . Surrey , & c , the office of Treasurer ; and Bro . T . C Walls , P . P . G . S . B . Middlesex , & c , that of honorary Secretary to the fund . Among the influential members of the Committee are Bros . H . B . Marshall , J . P ., Past G . Treas ., & c . ; J . L . Mather , A . G . D . C . ; C . F . Matier , P . G . Std . Br . ; T . A QUAINT COLLKCTION . —Students of Scandinavian manners and customs and folklore will do well to avail themselves of present opportunities , and visit betimes the Hanway-street Gallery , where Mr . Litchfield is exhibiting a quaint and curious collection bearing upon the history ot Sweden and Norway during past centuries . Here , almost lost amidst a wealth of varied art treasures , are to

be found reminiscences of the old Norwegian whale fishery —once so prosperous , but which vvas abandoned in 11395 , spoons of wonderful fashion dated from 1690 to 1750 , a chair which belonged to one of the Swedish Archer bands in the year 1652 , a cup commemorating the disastrous wars in

1715-17 ; silver toys , Swedish . heirloom ,, tankars , Danish copper flagons of extreme antiquity , Norwegian beakerform cups and shrines of the dark-hued Swedish porphyry . The real strength of the exhibition lies , however , in ancient ceramics , carving , and enamels vvhich cannot be praised too highly .

THE LATE SHIPWRECKS OFI * CAPE HORN . — Extract of letter from David James ( late Master ) of the barque Colorado , of Glasgow— " Having lost our ship on Staten Island , on the 5 th of July last , and having saved neither effects nor provisions , we vvere then compelled to travel over the island for 10 days , subsisting on nothingbut shell-fish and seaweed . On the ioth J uly we came across

another shipwrecked party of 17 , the surviving part of the crew of the British ship Dunskeig , of Glasgow , 14 having perished through exposure . Now , the ship vvas lost on the 23 rd of June , and a lot of the cargo , consisting of Epps ' s cocoa , vvas washed ashore out of the wreck . There was nothing saved except the cocoa , and vve , numbering 25 men , were kept alive on it up to the 20 th of

August , when we vvere rescued by the steamer Mercuric , of Buenos Ayres , and landed there on the 13 th September . 'Too much praise cannot be given to this cocoa for the preserved state that it was in , alter being in the bottom of the sea , in the wreck of the Dunskeig , for a fortnight , and then washed ashore , and lying on the beach and rocks of Staten Island for about six weeks , subject to the exposure of the

severest weather on the face ot the globe . The island is situated in a region of perpetual ice , snow , and storms ; and after all this test , it was as fresh and dry as if in the works . As vve had a good stock of it there , vve used it in a liquid state for drink , and also made it in a thick state , like porridge , and we also baked it on the fire , which made splendid bread , and kept us alive and warm on this barren slant ! . "

Their use by the fair sex has become so constant for the removal of their ailments , that rare is the household that is without them . Amongst all classes—from the domestic servant to the peeress—universal favour is recorded to these reno ' render

vating Pills ; their invigorating and purifying properties them safe and invaluable in all cases ; they may be taken by females of all ages for any disorganisation or irregularity of the system , speedily removing the cause and restoring the sullerer to robust health . As a family medicine they are unapproachable for subduing the maladies of young and old , ADVT ,

leaving the premises where the assembly had been held he stumbled and fell down several steps to the pavement .

J . A . McKenzie .

A QUAINT COLLKCTION . —Students of Scandinavian manners and customs and folklore will do well to avail themselves of present opportunities , and visit betimes the Hanway-street Gallery , where Mr . be found reminiscences of the old Norwegian whale fishery —once so prosperous , but which vvas abandoned in 11395 , spoons of wonderful fashion dated from 1690 to 1750 , a chair which belonged to one of the Swedish Archer bands in the year 1652 , a cup commemorating the disastrous wars in

As vve had a good stock of it there , vve used it in a liquid state for drink , and also made it in a thick state , like porridge , and we also baked it on the fire , which made splendid bread , and kept us alive and warm on this barren slant ! .
